Latest Patch: 1.69. If you have an earlier version, please download the latest patch as soon as possible.

The download has been updated to version 1.69. It includes all fixes up to this point. There is no need to re-download if you have patched in the fixes separately.

You know that game many aspiring devs create? The one starring their friends, often times based on a chat room, or some forums, or a MMO... or perhaps a fangame that barely resembles its source material. The one that gets maybe a half hour of gameplay finished and is completely unintelligible to anyone except that group of friends. Yeah, that one. Now, what if someone actually saw that project all the way through, and attempted to actually make it a fun, accessible, and playable game that was faithful to its source material?

Enter Legend of Balance. This game originally started out as a fun little project for friends, starring characters from Final Fantasy XIV. Over time, and with a ton of effort, it changed into a complete game of its own. It still stars our characters, and there are still a few injokes, but the plot has been set up as such that any Final Fantasy fan can get into the game and enjoy it as a light hearted Final Fantasy romp. Players of FFXIV will find quite a bit to enjoy as well. The story of the game takes place inbetween the end of FFXIV 1.0 and the start of A Realm Reborn(if you haven't played FFXIV, this part probably doesn't matter, and the game can be standalone).

The game revolves around a group of heroes, champions of the realm of Eorzea. In the midst of an intense battle to decide the fate of Eorzea, the heroes are transported away before facing certain death at the hands of Bahamut. Finding themselves separated in a brand new world, the heroes begin a journey to reunite and find a way home. However what starts off as a simple quest quickly unfolds into a classic journey of crystals, great evil, and steadfast allies. Before this adventure ends, they will discover the truth behind this strange new world, and uncover the binds that tie it to their own home and beyond.

-30 to 40 hours of gameplay, including a multitude of sidequests.

-Enjoy a faithfully recreated Final Fantasy battle system. Everything is as you remember it from the classics!

-Utilize classic abilities, including commands such as Jump, Runic, Blitz, Mime, Throw, Mix, Blue Magic, Dualcast, and much more, along with new commands and abilities based on other games in the series, such as Draw Out from Tactics.

-Equip Magicites to gain access to powerful summons and customize your stat growth.

-A huge cast of unique playable characters, including several hidden ones.

-Find and use faithfully recreated equipment. Favorites like the Ultima Weapon, Illumina, Brave Blade/Chicken Knife, Offering, and much, much more is all here to find and use to become unstoppable!

-Dozens of sidequests ensure there's plenty to do, with no need for excess grinding.

-Face off against familiar foes and brand new ones, including a nostalgia filled bonus dungeon for those who complete the main story.

-Facing a foe that your current party can't handle? Switch party members anytime, even in the middle of a fight!

-Buy rare and unique items at the Auction House, and battle in the Colosseum!

-Take part in minigames, including fishing and an arcade-style airship shooter.

-Customizable Battle Speed, Battle Mode, and Difficulty will get you the experience you want, be it tough as nails or a more relaxed game.

Playing the game at higher resolution

Hey all! I just wanted to post a link to an upscaler that will let you play pretty much any rpgmaker game at a much higher resolution.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/magpie.mirror/

Download this and follow the instructions, open Magpie, then the game, then press alt+F11. I'd suggest using either the Anime4k or CRT upscalers for LoB. This will let you play the game in fullscreen and it will look really nice!

You can take your time on it. Don't feel rushed. That's how mistakes are made. It's going to take a while for people to play the whole game anyways.
I am planning to write up a sidequest/hidden item guide so that people won't miss anything. I was planning to have a basic one up this morning, but I've been busy trying to track down a few nagging bugs people are experiencing. It should be up within the next couple of days, and I'll try to keep it as story spoiler-free as possible. Good idea though, the game does have a lot of sidequests and stuff hidden that a lot of players might miss.
You know, for completionists, you should make a walkthrough of the game where people can find hidden items and bosses after playing the game to complete it 100%.
Oh, haha. Well, you should like the rest of that character plot going on, then. =)

That's weird... does restarting the game solve it? No one has ever reported lag in battles at all, even after extended play sessions. But then again, none of the testers were running win 8.1, so maybe there is a problem there. :/

I just tested, and 3-4 seconds is about the speed that a character's bar fills on the default speed. With the speed set to max, it's more like 2 seconds, which I figured was plenty fast when you have 4 characters and need to allow for things like Haste still being effective. That said though if there's a problem I can pretty easily just add a faster speed so that's not an issue. Let me know if that'd help!

EDIT: @WCouillard: Usually I'd think so too, but I spent a ton of time correcting any memory leaks/cache problems and cleaning up/removing offending scripts (Tsukihime's Scene Interpreter was causing a massive leak, for example). Testers have played the current version for hours and hours and the memory usages stays stable and no one has reported any battle slowdown (but again, all the testers have been on Win 7)... the only issue was the world map, which has been fixed. Of course, if you know of any problem scripts I might be using I'll definitely look into them. I have modified the ATB to run at a constant speed like a FF ATB, but what I did couldn't cause a problem as I just changed a method to return a constant rather than a variable.

Oh, I didn't mean "emotional" in a bad sense, but in a good one! ;)

And nah, it still feels slow (like I need to wait 3-4 seconds before an ATB gauge charges for a character to act; this kind of long wait applies even after the game: I noticed that the longer I play the greater lag builds over time and I have Windows 8.1 and it has lag issues with a lot of RMVXAce games; I swear I had no lags on Win7 for that engine's games; when I start the game it's pretty smooth but after some time it starts to lag more and more).

It sounds like a memory leak. Any number of things could be causing it, but I'd be quick to blame a poorly written script.

Aww, I'm sorry! I know the story is generally fairly light-hearted but I felt it needed to have at least a bit of emotion at times to flesh out characters. I promise there's not too much more sad stuff! ;;

btw, did you ever solve that ATB issue?

EDIT: @fharden: I'm sorry you ran into that error. Check out the current blog post and follow the instructions for a fix. It's an issue with some of the audio files having non-unicode characters in them, and some PCs/extraction programs not supporting that.
when doing quest for the guild every time I enter the forest I get this??

Script' Krosk error line 89 uninitialized constant audio UTFSEXT[
This game was supposed to be a "light-hearted story". Why am I all emotional now? ;_;
I got to the point where there's a flashback of Bobe's sacrifice and I'm crying. Make it stop.
You get access to the Journal and Party functions when you start getting guild quests and more than 4 party members, respectively. As for the controls, this seems to be a problem for a fair number of people... I might redo them a bit so that RPGMaker defaults all work. They were changed because most of the testers didn't like the defaults, so I made them more in line with standard PC games. Still, the game definitely does play better on a controller if you have one!

Thank you for the compliments and I'm glad you're having fun. =)
Hej.
Its a very good and fun game, love it,but i´m having troubles playing it on keyboard.I get most of the commands now(i think? ) but the journal? Is it something that i cant look in early in the game or is it a command that i dont get?
It really gives me headache, maybe should buy an handcontrol.
And what is Runic for?

(For example, my character--Aeth--is a male miqo'te now rather than a hyur.)
Male Miqo'te now? Coool! I really love their look! Seekers of the Sun or the Moon if I may ask?

even "Aeth" has its charm.
Aww, thanks! The full name is actually Aethaeryn, but Ry said it was too long and too hard to spell. ;_; Plus everyone calls me Aeth anyway.

(Edit: I keep omitting words and writing confusing things somehow.)
Not exactly long but double "ae" is a bit too much in my opinion so I think that's the reason.
I also must admit that whenever a message popup with your text I imagine your voice to be Thancred's (who I really like because his voice is great). Your faces look awfully a lot alike. OTL
Haha yeah it always takes me a minute to remember to use hide instead here!
Sure thing, I'll make up a spoiler-free sidequest guide after I get the latest update sorted out. After a point, the game is almost FF6-like in that you can just go finish it if you want, or you can do like 5+ hours of extra content. The guide should be done by the morning. I'm really happy you're liking the game!

And thanks haha, it's spoiler on most sites so I was just a bit confused.
If you want to make a list I'd appreciate it. Not necessarily full spoilers, but just "Look here" type things so I know I got it all. I'm at the tree now, though probably won't be able to actually play much until Monday night,

Also spoilers work with hide and /hide
@rebel They do. You can get some pointers by visiting the Fortuneteller in Emerald (the one that was closed before). They'll hint at where you can find all of the character sidequests. There are other sidequests too, including the hunt chain that starts at the Hunter's Lodge. There are other sidequests scattered around the world also. I'll put a spoiler saying where to find a few. If you'd like I can make up a full list for you to save the searching. Note that some character sidequests don't become available until after a certain plot event, and a couple have other requirements (like building the town to max level). If you can go to the Fortuneteller, they are all available.

Try checking Port Enaya, the Temple of Light, Gurgu Village, Mielo if you have Divinus, and the hidden path on the first screen of Frozen Whisper Forest for some others. Note that these only become available after a plot event when you enter the big tree. There are also a lot of character development scenes that are triggered by staying at inns around the world, if you missed those.

Again, if you'd like a comprehensive list of sidequests, optional bosses, and so on, let me know and I'd be happy to make one up. Don't want you missing anything!

@Rydia (or anyone else) I'm just wondering, do all the characters have side quests? I did the one for Karina and the Dragoon whose name I can't remember (I'm sorry!), so I'm curious if everyone has one

I believe all but one character has side quests. You'll come across a character much later in the game that was kind of added on at the very end that doesn't have one. Most likely because they're not central to the story. (I don't think they even have any dialog besides when you recruit them)

@magnaangemon01 Tents not being sold everywhere was a bit of an oversight, we'll be fixing that as soon as we've fixed any critical bugs that come up. Thanks for bringing it back to our attention! The save points are also in place to serve a similar function as traditional RPGs: if you see a save point, a boss or plot event is probably coming up. Gives a heads up to the player so they are not caught unaware by a boss fight.

@Swish Just echoing what was said, this version contains a lot more backstory for the characters that establishes who they are and their history. The old version frankly sucked about that, and it's why I never formally released it and pulled it for a revamp. I'll explain a little.

I'm not sure it's quite FF6 level like Noel said (but the compliment is very flattering, thank you!), but characters do have backstories now that play into events of the game and serve to make them a bit more relatable. As for making them more epic, that might be my fault. I felt that if I made the characters too "badass" that people would just think they were Mary Sues. So I tried to reel that in by giving them some character flaws, not having them come out victorious in every encounter with the bad guys, and so on. Maybe I overdid it and they come off as boring to you.

Everything else has been explained by the others. I kinda knew going out the gate that this game probably wouldn't be enjoyed by everyone, and that's totally fine. Disliking it doesn't make your opinion of it invalid. Thanks for the feedback. =)
There's no point to have one in the mines because no one sells them by this point, and you only have 1, and odds are that's used before the minotaur fight.
