Latest Patch: 1.69. If you have an earlier version, please download the latest patch as soon as possible.

The download has been updated to version 1.69. It includes all fixes up to this point. There is no need to re-download if you have patched in the fixes separately.

You know that game many aspiring devs create? The one starring their friends, often times based on a chat room, or some forums, or a MMO... or perhaps a fangame that barely resembles its source material. The one that gets maybe a half hour of gameplay finished and is completely unintelligible to anyone except that group of friends. Yeah, that one. Now, what if someone actually saw that project all the way through, and attempted to actually make it a fun, accessible, and playable game that was faithful to its source material?

Enter Legend of Balance. This game originally started out as a fun little project for friends, starring characters from Final Fantasy XIV. Over time, and with a ton of effort, it changed into a complete game of its own. It still stars our characters, and there are still a few injokes, but the plot has been set up as such that any Final Fantasy fan can get into the game and enjoy it as a light hearted Final Fantasy romp. Players of FFXIV will find quite a bit to enjoy as well. The story of the game takes place inbetween the end of FFXIV 1.0 and the start of A Realm Reborn(if you haven't played FFXIV, this part probably doesn't matter, and the game can be standalone).

The game revolves around a group of heroes, champions of the realm of Eorzea. In the midst of an intense battle to decide the fate of Eorzea, the heroes are transported away before facing certain death at the hands of Bahamut. Finding themselves separated in a brand new world, the heroes begin a journey to reunite and find a way home. However what starts off as a simple quest quickly unfolds into a classic journey of crystals, great evil, and steadfast allies. Before this adventure ends, they will discover the truth behind this strange new world, and uncover the binds that tie it to their own home and beyond.

-30 to 40 hours of gameplay, including a multitude of sidequests.

-Enjoy a faithfully recreated Final Fantasy battle system. Everything is as you remember it from the classics!

-Utilize classic abilities, including commands such as Jump, Runic, Blitz, Mime, Throw, Mix, Blue Magic, Dualcast, and much more, along with new commands and abilities based on other games in the series, such as Draw Out from Tactics.

-Equip Magicites to gain access to powerful summons and customize your stat growth.

-A huge cast of unique playable characters, including several hidden ones.

-Find and use faithfully recreated equipment. Favorites like the Ultima Weapon, Illumina, Brave Blade/Chicken Knife, Offering, and much, much more is all here to find and use to become unstoppable!

-Dozens of sidequests ensure there's plenty to do, with no need for excess grinding.

-Face off against familiar foes and brand new ones, including a nostalgia filled bonus dungeon for those who complete the main story.

-Facing a foe that your current party can't handle? Switch party members anytime, even in the middle of a fight!

-Buy rare and unique items at the Auction House, and battle in the Colosseum!

-Take part in minigames, including fishing and an arcade-style airship shooter.

-Customizable Battle Speed, Battle Mode, and Difficulty will get you the experience you want, be it tough as nails or a more relaxed game.

Playing the game at higher resolution

Hey all! I just wanted to post a link to an upscaler that will let you play pretty much any rpgmaker game at a much higher resolution.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/magpie.mirror/

Download this and follow the instructions, open Magpie, then the game, then press alt+F11. I'd suggest using either the Anime4k or CRT upscalers for LoB. This will let you play the game in fullscreen and it will look really nice!

Are you able to look through the files and tell me exactly what needs to be altered?

I don't really have time to do that right now, sorry. You can try just doing a find for all references of Window_MP and mp_window, that should bring up most of it.

Which script was it that allowed you to get the magic selection like this? I noticed you did it with items as well. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LdUMRVrLyYOMCuxLWzSyvpdZo84MHki8/view?usp=sharing
I wrote the scripting for that myself. Unfortunately it isn't really modular as it is written into the scripts for the skill window.
Is there a way to get it to work for my game? I'd love to use it!
You'd need to dig through the code and try to adapt it. :/
Which part of the code? I'm having trouble locating it

I think most of it is a subclass of Window_SkillList. Like I said though it will take a lot of adapatation and you will have to change some other stuff like on_skill_ok/cancel and so on to display and call/close the window appropriately. I wrote it specifically for LoB, I never had any intention of making it modular so it's gonna be hard to just pull out and have work.

A few simple questions:

1. can you really NOT run away from random encounters??? because i can't figure it out.

2. how do you open the world map? it's been a long time since i played.

1. To run away, just hold the Q and E buttons on the keyboard. If you're using a controller, it's L1/R1 or LB/RB just like in FF.

2. To open the world map, just press Tab once you have it. It should be select/back or start on controller depending on which kind you are using.

I just finished playing through this for a second time and wanted to once again say how amazing this game turned out. The humorous dialogue with all of the references to various final fantasy games is just so much fun to read.

Thanks again!

I'll also chime in and agree with the previous posters that yeah, Karina with ultima weapon and some buffs like Valor is just laughably overpowered. It seems like ultima weapon ignores the "multi hit" penalty of Offering, so you get 4 full powered attacks when using ultima weapon. I think in the original FF6 ultima weapon worked the same way, so maybe it's intentional.

You get the weapon so late in the game anyway that it's not really a balance problem, but it kind of overshadowed everyone else in the roster while clearing the postgame dungeon. I ran Karina with 3 supports (Divinus, Elysra, Cassie) and they just buffed up Karina and let her tear down every optional boss in like four rounds by herself.

Great to hear you liked the game enough to do a second playthrough! =)

As far as Ultima Weapon goes, yeah it's a bit broken. Yeah it was meant to emulate the original Ultima Weapon but I think it could do with some scaling down. That said, almost any sword user can be broken with it, just that most people are likely to have given Karina more STR ups and such. Orophin can use it well too with his high base HP, 99 is the fastest character and is a good choice for it, and even Dag can be made into a massive melee powerhouse because he can cast Quick on himself.

As mentioned, Abelia can be really great as well. I don't see many people mentioning him but Aeth with Flare Blade cast on his weapon, an Offering, and pumped up stats does a ton of damage also. Ashiee can made into a crazy damage counter attacker. Actually any of the characters will be pretty crazy if you pump their stats up.

You can basically break every character in the game to do stupid amount of damage or defense or whatever with the correct setup.

Not kidding there. My Karina was a beast, but if I ever go back to play again, she'd be even moreso; as, um, you, Ashiee, had gotten a lot of the early +STR level ups before I decided to stop using you.
Abelia wound up my MVP; mostly because she was wearing the best INT materia through the whole game, and because Ultima+Economizer. Karina was eventually sort of close to that. Cassie made sure nobody could ever die. And Divinus ... basically doubled everyone else's effectiveness. For not really having much to her character story-wise, she sure is strong...
@Darklen
Interesting stuff with Flame. I'm 98% sure that is a bug, though I know when Rydia and myself were discussing Flames abilities at the start, we were talking about ideas like "what if Flame just doesn't listen to you and does random abilities??", kinda an inside joke since Flame in FFXIV 1.0 would sometimes do his own thing... >_> That being said I don't think we went that route at all with mime, unless Rydia programmed something in to be jankey intentionally.

Intargir we will look into.

As Karina being over powered late game... It's intentional, but so is the fact that you can basically break every character in the game to do stupid amount of damage or defense or whatever with the correct setup. Same goes with HP stacking. If you really want to have a lot of HP, we gave you the options to.
