Developed for the Non-RPG Maker Event, The Legend of Zelda: The Last Hero is a simplistic fan game developed for Zelda Classic. With gameplay that marries both classic and modern styles of Zelda gameplay, in addition to challenging dungeons, The Last Hero is sure to find a spot for both new players and veterans to enjoy!

----------

Far away from a familiar world, there exists the kingdom of Skyrule. This kingdom in the highlands maintains peace and harmony, thanks to its magical artifact: The Triforce.

One day, a summoner, named Farenbei, decided to experiment with the Triforce. With his magic, we was able to summon two people from another world into the land of Skyrule. One was a beautiful young woman, and the other was a hulking, monstrous pig demon.

This demon was Ganon, the Archfiend of Darkness, and before Farenbei could reverse his summoning spell, Ganon overpowered him, and attempted to absorb the power of Skyrule’s Triforce for his own. As a last resort, Farenbei used his remaining magical power to split the Triforce into six pieces and scatter them across the kingdom’s sacred temples, enraging the monster and leading towards his brutal death.

From then on, Skyrule’s peace turned into an era of darkness. Exploiting the mystic power of the maiden he was summoned with, Ganon unleashed his army of monsters to terrorize the kingdom’s civillians. He even overthrew Skyrule’s king, and transformed his castle into a den of evil, now known as the Dark Tower.

Many heroes attempted to challenge this new threat, but all of them have either fallen in battle or transformed into the minions of Ganon’s army. Skyrule’s war for peace and freedom from the demon king seemed like a futile effort, until one of Farenbei’s colleges decided to turn to summoning magic for one last time.

The college summoned a young boy named Link, a descendant of the Hero of Ages in his world. After briefing the boy on just what happened to him, the college tasks Link to seek out the fragmented pieces of the Triforce in Skyrule’s now corrupted sacred temples, defeat Ganon, and restore peace to the land. With that, a grand new adventure for a young, would-be hero awaits.

This game requires Zelda Classic 2.50 to play. When the final game is uploaded, there will be two main downloads: One with Zelda Classic included and the other the quest file itself, to accommodate both the parties that don't have Zelda Classic installed and those who do, respectively.

To play this quest, after starting up Zelda Classic from the main title screen, enter your name in one of the available file slots and press enter. Aterwards, select your file and hit the ALT key, then press alt again to open a quest to play. Browse to the Last Hero folder and select the ".qst" file to load the quest, then hit ENTER to play it (you'll know you did everything right if your file's icon changed from an 8-bit "Link" sprite to a "Rupee" sprite).

Version 1.2 Build (hopefully the last one) Is up!

First of all, I'd like to extend my thanks to everyone who gave this game a shot, especially Solitayre for giving this a review!

I've uploaded a new build of the game that addresses some of the flaws and bugs that people have brought up. Here is the change log for version 1.2:

  • Removed the hookshot pole from the beach area (What was the point of it?).

  • Redesigned the whistle warp section with the heart piece to have a way to escape (I've added a stairway and a pushable boulder now!).

  • The Magic Shield can no longer be eaten (Take that, Like-Likes!).

  • Decreased the chance at which rupees spawn from bushes and grasses a little bit (20% may have been a bit too high?).

  • The walk-through wall in Mystic Temple has been replaced with a bombable wall (Consistency is an important part of design).

  • Added a bit of a hint to the map location in Cliffside Temple (If you pay attention to floor tiles already, this shouldn't be a big deal, right?).

I've also added the story, controls, and a nifty little Tips and Tricks section to the readme file included in the game's downloads, to make it more useful in helping you play the game.

Thank you guys for you feedback, and enjoy!

Thanks, Cash!

I'm just about finished with this game. I'm doing some playtesting to iron out any bugs/poor design decisions before release, but you can expect a completed game soon! ^_^

I'm really liking this so far!

...But I'm completely stuck. I just beat the second temple and got the hookshot, but I'm at a complete loss what to do next. The only place to use the hookshot seems to be the shore, but that doesn't seem to lead anywhere.

- In that same shore area, with the hookshot pole and the peahats, use the Roc's Feather to leap to the next walk-able tile near the right side of the screen. It's kind of a tight jump you have to make and I don't know if I should have made it more obvious. Thoughts?

Seeing as all jumps so far have been one tile jumps, with one exception in the second dungeon, where you had a knight jump, it might be better if you made that more obvious. Maybe not having the hookshot pole on the platform where it is currently, but on the far right would be better. That would probably also prevent people from sequence breaking. You can easily jump to the first platform with the Roc's feather anyway.

The jump took me around 10 tries to get. I think I actually tried that jump earlier, but deemed it impossible.

In one of the rooms of the 4th temple, it's possible to get stuck. You can fire your hookshot from the right at a target that only has a platform underneath it, causing you to get stuck.
It's above the room with the compass.

And I thought I playtested this.:P

You can try to restart the game (through pressing F6 > Quit > Continue) to get yourself unstuck, but I'll get around to putting up a fixed version very soon.

Am I not able to use my bombs at the beginning? I've gotten stuck and can find no way to progress and the only way seems to be to blow up some of these boulders.

Yep, you are not able to use your bombs at the beginning. The bombs you get increase your reserve, but in order to use them you need to get an item from the first temple (in the forest area West of town).

Try slashing some conspicuous bushes if you can't figure out what to do from there. :)
I think I found another way to get stuck.
If you dodge the tornado created by the whistle, it won't let you summon another one until you leave the area. Not normally a problem, but there is a heart piece in an area with no exits, requiring the flute to enter or leave. Mess up your teleport and there is no way out.

In other news, I have defeated Ganon... and am apparently still unworthy of wielding the Master Sword. Did I miss a quest somewhere?

You have to get all 16 heart container pieces (including the one at the shop) and all heart containers found in dungeons to get to a total of 13 heart slots, then you'll be worthy of wielding the master sword. I may have made the requirement insane but it's a ridiculously powerful item that one-shots almost everything other than Ganon in the game.

I can't find the doggie, I can't kill those stupid blue squiddy things to progress the first temple either

I'll give it another looksie today, though, as perhaps I did miss something else

Maybe I should make a "tips" page. :P
The "blue squiddy" things (hardhat beetles) can be killed only by bombs, candle fire and magic (you'll need to know the last two methods for later). To get the bomb of the first temple, head to the room with the tiles shaped like an arrow (should have a combination of slime and stalfos (skeleton) enemies), but instead of following that path, slash one of the bushes in the lower right corner of the room to be taken to a passageway leading to the room with the bomb item. Now you'll be able to break open hidden walls and kill the blue things.

If you are having trouble even getting to that point, in the room with all those keese, kill all of the enemies and push a block to reveal a key, then head west go to get to the point I'm describing.

Don't worry about the dog yet. You'll need to have at least the power bracelet from the fourth dungeon in order to even reach it.

Guess who's back?

So I got through that first dungeon thanks to ye, and was feelin pretty good about myself when I got through the second one without any hand holding. Now I be stuck again (though I did get the stronger sword for having 6 hearts, so yay me); it seems like I need to go to the right when I get to the beach south of the lake as there's a thing I can hookshot/jump to but I cant seem to figure out how to get further than that (also, bonus shop cave was apparently right there).

What do

Also, I need to stop confusing my B button for my A button.. That's gotten me killed 2-4 times now

Are you playing the most recent version? Either way, you'd use the Roc's Feather to jump to that right side of the screen. In the first version, it's not as obvious and it's kind of a tight jump you need to make and the water tiles that are actually safe to jump on don't appear that way, but do it with confidence and you should get to the Shoreline Temple easily.

... I had version 1.0 the whole time.. Overwriting it with the current/most recent isn't gonna wipe my save, is it?
Played for a bit. The way the sword works is kinda interesting and wonky. Some of the graphics are meh. Most of that is probably part of Zclassic.

No real complaints about the design. Maybe that there was too much grass and bushes, so it was too easy to get hearts. No sense of danger and I was able to get tons of cash just farming 2 screens outside of the shop. Then I died and my big shield was gone and I quit.

I'm not ENTIRELY sure since I'm a bit new to developing with ZClassic, but I think overwriting the .qst file with the most recent one won't affect your save.

It's weird how your big shield disappeared, as I remember setting that item to not be eaten by Like Like type enemies. Did you save your game after dying?

What did you think of any of the dungeons, if you ever got to that point? I did attempt to add a bit more pressure in those areas than the overworld, because I wanted the overworld to be a safer area by comparison.

I seem to be stuck in the Cliffside Temple.

I've tried bombing every wall, pushing every block, killing every enemy, etc. But I can't seem to find where this last key is...
