“THERE IS NO NIGHTMARE IN DAYBREAK. THE CITY IS ABSOLUTELY FINE. PLEASE FORGET THAT IT EVER EXISTED.”

Weird and unfortunate things are happening in the city of Daybreak. To the rest of the world, the city seems to have simply vanished, but inside, it has become a playground for mysterious beings who see humans only as hosts for their own amusement.

Alicia’s a bit strange. She still likes to wear her old baseball jersey, even though her team disbanded over a year ago. She can see otherworldly creatures that no one else seems to notice. She also has weird powers that she keeps hidden from the rest of the world. But when she receives a call for help from her niece in Daybreak, she’ll do anything to save her.

Caught up in the struggle along with Alicia are Miriam, a secretary and gun aficionado who only wants to escape the city, Lamar, an overworked middle school English teacher, and Dottie, Alicia’s niece, who has been captured for some nefarious purpose.

Explore what’s left of the ravaged city and find your way through surreal otherworldly areas that connect the broken urban shell. Encounter any other citizens who have survived and make contact with the strange entities that now inhabit this realm. Survive. Or be swallowed up by the city and forgotten forever.

Controller Support: If you'd like to play this game with a controller rather than the keyboard, then press F1 while the game is running and select the "Gamepad" option. From there it should allow you to remap the controls to your controller.

I know not every controller works with RPG Maker but I've gotten both a wired XBox One controller and the wireless 8BitDo controller to work with it, just from my own experience.

Window Size: You can double the window size by pressing F6, or go fullscreen by pressing F5.

Warnings: Game contains flashing lights and swearing.

Content Warnings: *sorta-spoilers?*
Child death, sounds of babies crying, last moments of a parent, mentions of suicide, general creepy stuff

NOW ON STEAM! Weird and Unfortunate RELEASE!

Click here to see Weird and Unfortunate Things Are Happening's STEAM PAGE!!!!

I finally pushed that big shiny launch button over on Steam, and now Weird and Unfortunate is up there and available to play, still for free!

I go by Sapphire Dream games over on Steam as a bit of rebranding, as I've been struggling for a while with the fact that "unity" is easily confused with the game making engine and I couldn't think of a way to remix it to sound unique.

This is my first game on Steam so I'm hoping I did everything right, but all my testing with the achievements and everything seemed to work, so fingers' crossed!

Huge thank you to everyone who wishlisted the game and promoted it on Twitter and itch and elsewhere! I really appreciate it!

Would you like to see any other of my games on Steam? I've already started tweaking Luxaren Allure for a possible Steam release, but we'll see how that goes.

Thanks again everyone!!! :DDDDDDDDDD

I really like the game so far. For what it's worth I decided to make a Let's Play out of it. Since it is my first try to record videos, it's probably awful and doesn't do the game justice. Also my English is terrible. But in case you are interested :)

You all are wonderful! Thanks so much for all the kind words, well-wishes, and support! :DDDD I'm really really thankful for how positive this release has been received thus far!

That's awesome! I'll try to check it out eventually. This probably sounds dumb, but I get weird anxiety watching LPs of my own games! Dunno what it is, I just feel uncomfortable, but I'll try to have a watch eventually! Thanks for making it! :DDD

It doesn't sound dumb! It totally makes sense! There's all the "Did I manage to convey this idea well?" and stuff like a review, but watching it in progress has so much tension in that it's not all at once and you can get it over with, etc!

Wow, thanks, I didn't think of it like that! I feel a little better about it :DDD
Really enjoying this when I have time to play it among all the 100s of other games I have going right now. Any chance of a partial or full tagged OST in the future or something?

What do you mean? Like a list of which BGMs play for which battles or something?

The file titles are already pretty descriptive? Check the Audio/BGM folder of the game?

I'm not sure what you mean by a full-tagged OST. However, aside from Malandy's point, the packed-in "credits.txt" also contains info about the material's sources as well?

Thank you very much! :DDD I got some people on Twitter interested in an OST as well. However, only about 8 or so of the songs were specifically commissioned for this game, and the rest were used under a creative commons license. I need to look in to if I can distribute those without getting into trouble XD

At the very least, I'd like to try to put the music into a youtube video for easy listening perhaps :D

They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

Pretty much all the CC licenses allow for sharing, by design.
By tags i mean ID3 tags for use in Winamp/Foobar2000, etc., i don't think the songs in the game folder are tagged.
Ahhh the game's on the featured menu now! Hurray~
Well, the game told me to post if I made it to
Neo Vinculum

and since no one else on RNM seems to have, here we are.
It was a wild trip; I even played it a second time to get all the Eldritch Speech translated~!

I never would have found it without reading your hints on itch.io on what to do with the Blue Mask, or encouraging me to keep searching the mines. And while I beat everything else on Nightmare - with little difficulty after the first boss even - I simply couldn't handle the boss at the bottom of Makyo, even with the power of Neo. Well, until I turned the difficulty down. That was... quite the alternate ending :P

Anyway, thank you very much for a great two weeks! (And for that matter, another great week a few years back with Luxuraen Allure~)

Woo! Second guy! I was first. Hehe. I just posted on the Complete thread instead of here...

Yeah, Nightmare Bottom Boss needs like, ~LV 70, best gear...

~160 AGI, and hitting Weaknesses every turn.

Congrats! :DDD Yeah, I went a little overboard with the secrets. Between the blue mask and the princess heart, it's really easy to miss stuff to get to that secret area. And I may have gone a liiiitle crazy with that bonus boss's difficulty XD;;;;

Thanks so much for playing, and I'm so glad you enjoyed both this and Luxaren Allure ^_^
I hate to admit it, but I'm stumped. So much so that I did an archaeological dig to figure out my user ID on this site, which I've basically only used once before. (It was to compliment one of your other games, in fact.)

I just can't seem to figure out...
...the code for the safe in the town hall. I seem to recall being given a clue that the first digit is a six. I believe the other digits have to do with markings on the walls in the town hall, but I'm just not putting it together.

I hope you're feeling kind enough to let me know what I missed and where. If not, I hope I can at least get some general hints? I don't want to beat my head against the wall.

Here's the notes I wrote concerning the matter Kanajana placed under the hide-tag:

Let's see if I can figure out this combo to the safe. I saw a poster with "Lucky number 13" written on it, which... might be a clue. The "8 is first" poster feels like a thing. I swear one of the dolls that Dottie could talk to had something to say on this matter too. Or maybe it was earlier in Town Hall? Let me backtrack a bit...

Well! There is a door with a "___5" indicator. Which... either is related to what I need, or is pure flavor-text. The theory, then, is that the combo is 8135. Let's give it a try?

Yep! That was the one! Whew! I thought I might have backtrack from my Dottie save.

Thank you, merci, gracias, grazie, danke, etc. I really appreciate it.
Kanajana - that bit you saw about "6 being first" is important too, and about to be Lost Forever. (I in fact didn't find it until my second playthrough).

You know that one crawling monster who asks if you should go North or West, and then he says which is in each direction in Eldritch Speech? ... go look to the west. Very, very carefully.
