Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

Pandora
A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

Ragnarok
The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Lanith
Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

Damien
A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

Azrielle
The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

Posts

Summons and whatnot
Ha! No one likes poor Azrielle. The thing about summons is that obtaining them isn't madatory to complete the game. In fact, you could probably beat the entire game without switching from Lanith even once. Summons spice up combat by adding new moves and abilities into the mix. Plus, having an entire army of monsters at your fingertips makes you feel more powerful, even though you really just need three. It's about having the luxury of thinking to yourself, "Should I crush this group of soldiers in the tentacles of my giant squid, or incinerate them with my fire breathing dragon instead? Decisions, decisions."

Being an OP Evil Sorceress

The reason why Pandora is so crazily overpowered compared to everyone else is because she is the only character in the game who is present for every battle. She is constantly gaining exp, while the others have to be switched into the party to grow stronger. Making the summons even stronger would make an already easy game laughably easy. I made Fount of Darkness and Infernal Awakening single target spells because I wanted the player to be careful in choosing their actions during Pandora's turns. I wanted them to think and plan, "Which character would benefit from this the most?"

Per-so-na!
That idea about adding a cost to summoning is interesting, but I believe it would only discourage players from using all their summons and force them to rely on a select few. I was hoping to create a Persona-like battle rythm, where the player would continually switch summons to suit the situation. That's why I'm not fond of Pandora's healing ability. Why switch to a healer when there's already one constantly sitting in your party? And yes, Demora is hilariously OP.

Rare Candy Demon's Draughts
The draughts actually do only affect summons, but when you use them they highlight the entire party, which is highly annoying. if you use one, you'll notice that there is no change in exp for non-summon characters, as the item is linked to a common event that grants a specific list of Actors exp. Maybe I'll switch the targeting on those items to 1 character so people don't get the wrong idea.

"Caterpie used String Shot!"
You've got some interesting suggestions for attack modifications, but there were a few specific reasons I decided to have certain characters learn specific moves. Let's take Damien for instance. I wanted each character to feel somewhat unique in their abilities and strategies. Giving him a healing move would make him feel more Lanith-ish, and break away from his theme of controlling people. The HP consuming moves are actually tied into the story in that using them takes a portion of the user's lifeforce. It would definitely makes sense for Damien, but not Marcus, as his magic doesn't burn up his life.

Thank You!
But hey, I always love hearing suggestions, so if you have any more, feel free to share. I hope you enjoyed your journey to ruin everyone's lives and crush their heroes under the feet of an army of monsters.
And the next part is up, part 19, in which I learn about the joys of being a necromancer, and experience the joys of impersonating the ghostbusters. Fun :)

... I liked Azrielle. Poor guy. Partly because I'm partial to mages, especially in RPGs where mana is effectively infinite. And partly because I actually found him the most interesting of Pandora's four human(-ish) allies:
What with him being a demon, literally made of evil and bound to Ragnarok, showing up even in Jeremy's flashbacks; but the few times we saw past his bluster, it looked like all he REALLY wanted was to be a good king to his people...
.

Unreasonably excited to see where the sequel is going; while the actual gameplay mechanics aren't that strong (everything very easy; did not even come close to the stated goal of making us want to use a bunch of summons, let alone rotate them in and out mid-fight...), the tone, atmosphere, storytelling, and ESPECIALLY the characters are at the very least among the best I've seen in RPGMaker; and like others have said, up there with a lot of cherished professional works.

Which members of Team Evil are going to be redeemed? Which, while still being puppy-kickers, will eventually turn on Lord Ragnarok? Which will be The Best Boss Fight(s) Ever?
My speculation: Marcus turns good after getting a little understanding from Team Good. Damien and Gryger both get taken out - Damien's death causing some angst in Our Heroes when they learn his backstory, Gryger not so much, as he's the only totally non-sympathetic ally in my book. An uneasy peace with Azrielle and the demons; probably after fighting him and Lanith, possibly the Maids, Rozalin, etc as earlier fights. And no freaking clue what's going to happen with Pandora ... I'd swear that several times, especially after sidequests, her talk of revenge *included* revenge against Ragnarok...
... but anyway, it's a testament to their characterization that I'm still wondering "what's going to happen to them?" And my faith that, unlike say Square-Enix, I won't be sorry I asked.
Well I'm glad someone does! Of course, we've been killing demon lords for so many years we're probably used to hating them by now.

Like you said, in the grand scheme of things, Azrille is just doing what he believes needs to be done to lead his people to a better future. Unfortunately, "human genocide" is on his to do list, so while he can be compassionate towards his own kind, he's still an evil jerk.

Wow, more unbelievably overwhelming compliments! I didn't expect people to get into the story so much. In fact, I thought they'd be bored since there's so much talking. I suppose the scenarios are doing their job then. You've got some interesting theories there, and while I won't spill the beans on future events, I will say that everyone's story reaches a conclusion in the sequel. I don't want to drag things out simply for the sake of making another game, I want every game in the series to have a major impact on the lore. The game's lore will continue even after Luminous Soul, but that's a conversation for another time.
i ussless to make a prequel to a prequel in my opinion bu it maybe devlop more charcther the prequel your wii creat is the sequel of wich game umbral or luminous is ther be a sequl to luminous
Useless to make a prequel to a prequel? Tell that to Star Wars. Besides, the order would be more like:
"???"(Prequel) --> "Umbral Soul" (Main Story) --> "Luminous Soul" (Sequel).
i dont watch star expect episode 3 sith revange sorry and why pandy dont kill damien after his chain quests and is a why i cant go in world at final foungeon
you do a very good games amd iwish make a let play but i dont know repload and flim the gams your have too Content to my happycoment and sugestion sorry
That's ok man, I don't know how to record and upload videos either. I appreciate the sentiment though. It's great you've been getting so much enjoyment out of the game.
it sure the sequel title will be less dark and i like the menu color ad badgroun with the cursur xd how many senario will be add for ultimate efitions becuse that woul be mean murch sides quests for you and more job so ou will retard the prodution of the sequel and pleaste dont make a lllllllllllong intro this time it inyeresting but long and make the sequel demo si a litle bit longer
I can't give an exact number of how many more scenarios there will be, but they won't necessarily be tied to new sidequests. Luminous Soul's prologue will have more interactivity than Umbral Souls, and won't be as long since the setting for the game has already been set.

I'm not sure I want to do a demo this time around. I was planning on just releasing the finished product when it was done.

Really? Damn I was already hoping to be able to sign up as one of the couple dozen testers you will surely have lining up.

Oh well waiting it is than. Will have to play trough the ultimate edition vanilla as well... once it is out at least. (Can't wait to see what the "bacon jam" is...)
no the new horoes are not preented only rhe villains and not the main cast for the sequel is here excep
if your play athena and persus or seren teeam at end we know we play as joel with lucien
so
i dont kno why only evils thing the villains do is destroy lindale and poison aster village
I have barely started playing this game and I already love it. Playing as the villain is truly a rare pleasure. (in fact, this is the first game in which I knew right of the bat and it's actually portrayed like it'll be a fun experience)

That said, I also like that the protagonist is a tragic villain, but still can come off as quite evil and arrogant, if a very entertaining kind.

Oh, not an hour into it and I'm already having a blast!!!

hello i wonder if you can but a magic orb [
hide]you can fuse sumon when you have marcus in your pary
that will be more usfull and can i
do slime quest without evolu him for the battle
Be careful dude, posting more than one time in a row is against the site rules, and it looks like you have 3 there. If you want to add something before someone had posted after your latest post, you can edit your previous post and add to it. I just don't want the powers that be dropping the hammer on you.

Heh nope, sorry. The only orbs in the games are key items, and they shouldn't be able to be bought or sold. I've fixed the second issue you mentioned for the ultimate version. Strangely enough, I like the slime quest the way it is now. It's designed so that the player won't grind up draughts and become super OP until a certain point in the game.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to scrambling for my life to get this bacon jam project done.
