Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

Pandora
A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

Ragnarok
The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Lanith
Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

Damien
A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

Azrielle
The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

Hi WheelmanZero,

I seem to have encountered a game-breaking bug. In Azrielle's castle, at this point: https://youtu.be/6KgPHL3Rt3A?t=13m50s instead of getting that dialogue menu, I got the prompt to place him into my party. I'm thinking maybe this happened because I had already recruited the berserker guy into my party from the monster kennel room. As a result, I have never been able to advance to the ebony cauldron room. Is there any solution? My last save file before that was a couple of hours back.
Ah yeah, I've heard about this. There's an invisible event next to the Giant in the Kennel that isn't supposed to be interact-able until later in the game. If you interact with it twice, it'll add the berserker to your party. This'll completely screw up the eventing, so I'm sorry to say you'll need to start from your last save. The glitch has already been fixed for the next version, fortunately. Thanks for letting me know.

Stop talking with air, Pandora. Bad girl.
Great game! I'm still playing through it, I came here to mention an issue I'm having: the text on "multipage" book type things gets cut off. Here is what I mean: http://i.imgur.com/RdkFPAl.png .

I'm guessing it is a font issue? There is one I'm supposed to have installed but don't? I'm kind of confused because no one else seems to be having the problem T_T

It's really bugging me because I love the game so I'm taking the time to read all the stuff, and this makes it hard.

edit - Also, I should say my favorite thing about this game is how the warm and fuzzy bits feel in contrast to the darker parts. So far my favorites are the "growing up with a succubus" story and the "mira and the baker" story.
Dragol- Pandora wouldn't be much of a villain if she wasn't an obnoxious jerk from time to time, heh heh. Wait a second...I thought you meant "putting on airs", but she's actually talking with air! Gotta fix that.

keithioapc- Yup, definitely looks like a font issue. The font the game uses is "VL Gothic". That's weird though, since rpg maker vx ace is supposed to include that font when you bundle up a game. Fortunately it's easy enough to fix. Just download the VL gothic font and copy it into a new folder called "Fonts". That should clear things up. I'll have to do that for the next version. Let me know if you have any more trouble.

Those were two of my favorite scenarios as well. They were all a lot of fun to make, and I thought it would be a good way to show some of the villains' softer sides.
@WheelmanZero - Thanks for the quick reply. I actually did already have VL Gothic. I went and deleted it everywhere, which of course lead to a crash on starting the game complaining it wasn't found. Then I put a new copy of it in the game folder and wound up right back where I started.

Then I decided to be tricky and found a smaller font and put it the folder in and called it VL Gothic. Doing this made dialog text and menu text shrink (to match the new font I'm tricking it into using), but the font on the multipage stuff remained unchanged. Are you sure that also uses VL Gothic, and not some other font?

It was a kick in the teeth that I managed to shrink everything EXCEPT the text I wanted to, hahaha.
Ah, that's it! I didn't even consider that the book reading script might be using a different font. Turns out the book script uses Calibri, while everything else uses VL Gothic. Try copying Calibri into there and it should work. Probably. 65% sure.
Hey! I just started playing your game a yesterday and I've been enjoying it a lot so far :) I'm not sure if this has been mentioned earlier in the posts but I've been having a problem with having too many people in my party.

At the Dark Altar (prior to the fight with Reinhart), I had Azrielle and Damien as my +2 in my party. Dialogue "force-ditched" Azrielle, but before I went into the fight, I saw there was still the option to use the Abyssal Portal so I went back to the castle and recruited Marcus (not expecting it would work but it did). Then I went back, fought, won, then went back to look at my party menu and now I had Azrielle as the fifth nonactive member of the party. Now whenever I summon a new creature in-battle, whomever is in the fifth slot moves up and so my party now consists of 4 characters instead of 3 characters and a summon. Is there a way to revert it?
cyancat- Have I ever mentioned how much I hate teleportation? Because I do. See, there's an event after your third character stays behind that adds a state to Pandora that seals the Abyssal Portal skill. If you heal using a gloom crystal however, that state will be removed, giving you access to the castle when you aren't supposed to be able to teleport. That's probably what's screwing things up.

I can't think of a way to get rid of that extra party member, which is probably going to mess with the eventing later on. Do you have a previous save? Tell me you have a previous save!

Dragol
- That's just awesome. Must...resist...urge to make Umbral Soul retro version.
It's a reverse cliche premise and story, in which you play as bad guys instead of good ol heroes. But the things that make this game so great are the characters and cutscenes. It was done really professionally, especially the characterizations. You have some serious writing skills. I really enjoy this game.
Thanks a lot pauldiablo, that's a huge compliment! I've never been one to fear cliches, to me it's all about execution. Now all I have to do is get rid of all these glitches and I'll finally be able to sleep at night! It's a good thing 500 people have already volunteered to be beta testers for the sequel, heh heh.
Yup, I don't hate on cliche game. Cliche means that many people implemented it. And many people implemented it because it's .... good. This game is so good. And I don't spend a lot of time on games and demos lately because I'm so busy. Any game that I don't find interesting within 10 minutes I just quit to save myself some time. This game is the first game that I actually finished in probably 4, 5 years. And the last game I finished was an AAA game by a big company. You sir have some serious writing skill and awesome sense of humor, lol. If there are some things that can be improve on, I would say the ending is a bit rush and empty. Also I'd like to see the contestants actually defeated someone else in the tournament. I hope you or someone put up some kind of walkthrough because I don't get all the scenes and couldn't access House Sullivan. I'm thinking about replay the game but soo busy right now.
heyyyyyyy what do i see about beta testing the sequel? *-* i want in too !! please, senpai, please ;___; i promise i will tell you about every "thier" i see ;)
pauldiablo- The first game you've finished in four years?! That's quite an honor! Writing's not all that hard, I just imagine the character's voice in my head whenever they speak. I've never considered myself much of a writer, but I'm glad you enjoyed the dialogue in spite of the "thier's". (Seriously, could someone create a spellchecking script? I would pay money for that.)

I would actually suggest holding off on replaying the game for now. I'm going to be releasing another version that includes an alternate campaign, along with a lot of other bells and whistles including new sidequests and scenarios. It'll also include a walkthrough, so you'll never miss another piece of optional content again. Sullivan Manor isn't accessible until the sequel though, so its contents will have to remain a secret for now.

gothicmiriel- It was 10-15 pages ago, waaaay back when people were first finishing the game. At this rate, I'll have 1000 testers by the time the sequel is released. Bah! You people don't fool me! You just want to play it early! You might need to remind me when the time comes Miriel, I'm having a hard time keep track of who volunteered already.
Just reporting back to say that putting in a Calibri font did indeed solve my issue.

While I'm here, I'll add that I'm very pleased with this game because I came here looking for something to scratch my "old school" RPG itch. The problem with old school RPGs though is honestly the game mechanics suck and are boring - games like Final Fantasy 1 just don't cut it any more. The game needs to have graphic presentation and storyline more along the lines of FF6 or Chrono Trigger to be worthwhile, and I feel your game succeeds in that regard.

My only real criticism is that I feel like doing the sidequests results in the game becoming too easy, but this is more of a problem inherent to the RPG genre than to your game (if it even is a problem, some people are fine with easy games). The only real way to avoid it is to make the enemies always scale, like Skyrim, but that has its own pitfalls. Or in other words there isn't really anything for me to complain about ;p
Woot! Good, that was bothering me. I guess I'll have to include Calibri and VL Gothic in a font folder for the next version so other players don't run into the issues you had. So...thanks for helping me make the game a little better!

You know what's funny? I've played almost no oldschool rpg's. I think the first rpg I ever played was Pokemon Blue. I actually haven't played chrono trigger, dragon quest, or most of the final fantasies including 1 and 7 (please don't hurt me). I played the psp remake of that one with cloud of darkness though. Had a boatload of fun, but that boss rush at the end was brutal.

The scaling enemy level angle seems to defeat the purpose of leveling to me. It worked well enough in skyrim (love that game to death), but for me, the purpose of leveling is so you can become strong enough to beat down bosses without breaking a sweat. It's all about feeling powerful using the strength you've earned. It's what I love most about rpg's.

Anyway, I hope the game keeps you entertained all the way to the end, and don't be afraid to become an overpowered spell-slinging ubermage that can crush anything with ease. After all, that's half the fun!
Yeah, it's really just a me problem, I like games that are challenging, and I like RPGs, so I want a challenging RPG, but those two things just don't combine well.

I like the point you made about crushing enemies being appropriate for Pandy though, I'll keep that in mind ^^

edit - Also, a minor bug: If you fight the instructor for the monster tamer quest while your slime is dead before the battle begins, you get a game over. I saved right before because I expected that might happen ;p
Blast! Everyone keeps finding new and creative ways to break the game! I might need those 1000 testers in the future after all. Thanks keithioapc, and everyone who has reported issues. I'm crushing the bugs as I learn of them, so the next version should be a much smoother experience thanks to all of you.
I was reading through the thread (looking for people's thoughts on which summons were the best), and I noticed you said you'd like to change how summons get EXP but you aren't a good scripter.

Well, if you still want a script that does something like that (or anything, really) I can probably do it for you. I have a decent amount of experience with VXAce scripting, I'm a good coder and I know my way around the game engine.

If it were me I'd do something like make summons get 5 times the EXP gain as long as they are below Pandy's level ('cuz she's a super good trainer, she brings them up to speed quickly, but they wouldn't surpass her). Or just make the out of combat monsters gain half the battle EXP (or all of it, but that seems like too much), and this could apply to out of combat non-monster characters too (surely they are doing something productive rather than just slacking off).

Anyways, just thought I'd offer.
