Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

Pandora
A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

Ragnarok
The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Lanith
Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

Damien
A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

Azrielle
The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

Posts

Wow, that's great of you to offer, but I think I've already come up with a solution. See, Demon's Draughts were always meant to be the main source of experience for summons. You can grind them up at the Colosseum, so that way Pandora and the others won't become overleveled while you bring your summons up to speed.

In the current build, it's harder to earn money than I'd like it to be, so I've added sellable drops to most monsters. I've also increased the exp gain from the draughts, and made it so you can use them in rapid succession. That should make it easy enough to get all the summons in the game to a respectable level. The summons become powerful enough to survive the endgame near lvl 20, so I wanted to limit their leveling while encouraging the player to level multiple summons.

Thanks again for the offer, I'll come straight to you if anything involving scripting has me stumped. I really appreciate the assist.
Man, I love this game. It has everything: feels, great characters, the intoxicating feeling of watching those pathetic mortals squirm in terror at the sight of y- ahem. I mean powerful summons. Not anything deeply sadistic. >~<

At any rate, this is honestly one of the best RPG Maker games I've played if we forget that this is the first PC one I've played and all the rest have been half finished ones on RPG Maker Fes for the 3DS. Can't wait for the ultimate edition and the sequel! I'm sure thier (couldn't resist) going to be great.
@WheelmanZero - It's no problem, I really liked the game so I'm more than happy to do a bit of scripting. Just send me a PM, that should give me an email notification.

I'm nearing the end of the game I think
(about to enter the capital). My favorite characters in the game are Serene ('cuz I'm a big softie), Lilith (she really came out of nowhere and was great. I also really liked her simply because she was the most challenging boss fight of the game so far. I'm super stingy when it comes to using consumables in RPGs, and she made me use my first two potions of the game XD) and of course Pandy+Lanith.
I'm excited to find out how this will end ^^
HalfNerd- Don't resist it buddy, embrace it! Embrace the sadism! There were more than a few times where I burst out into fits of maniacal laughter while testing the game.

Ah, your first PC rpg maker game eh? I'm ecstatic I was able to help introduce you to the wonderful world of rpg maker games then. This site has a million to choose from and there's something here for just about everyone, so I hope you continue to enjoy yourself. I wish enerbrain would sell the art assets in Fes as DLC for the PC makers, some of those monsters look amazing.

Oh har har. Well joke's on you because I've already accepted my fate of being forever known as the "thier" guy! I've sent a request to the mods to have my username changed to "ThiermanZero." Thanks for the post pal, great to hear you're having a good time.

keithioapc- Will do. Thanks, you're the best. I'm a massive item hoarder myself so I hear where you're coming from. Here's hoping you enjoy the finale as much as the rest of the game.
Wow. That was seriously just a great game. I couldn't stop playing --- I finished in just a few days. Heck, it was so good I made an account here just to comment.

You put in a lot of work and effort into Umbral Soul, I can tell. I particularly enjoyed the scenarios and side quests, my favourite scenario being "The Baker and the Gorgon" and the side quest you perform with Lanith. The former is cute and brings a smile to my face, and the latter is sweet.

I love the extra dialogue. I'm not sure how many people realizes this, but by having different character combos in your party, you'll get different dialogue. Having Lanith may also activate unique dialogue. Talking to NPCs twice may trigger another piece of dialogue. It's just one of the little things I like about Umbral Soul. I'll replay boss battles and cutscenes with different character combosjust to see new dialogue. (Gotta love Gryger + Azrielle's interactions. Just pure comedy.)Magnificent writing!

The characterization was excellent. It's not your typical villain in a game who slaughters innocents and rampages just because. There are times when Pandora's cruel demeanor cracks and reveals signs of humanity. One would think Azrielle is completely cold and heartless, but if you divulge into his side quests... well, he's still cold but not completely heartless. It's nice how you infuse humour into your characters. Damien constantly making snarky remarks will never get old. Gryger is alike, but not much more open. ("Whaddya you become my queen?" is one of his best lines.)I can't really take Azrielle seriously with his "I will incinerate you!" Marcus' nerdiness is gold comedy. Sometimes I can't help but feel bad for him when he hesitates to perform evil deeds ):. Best of all is Pandora's reactions to her subordinates. She's always so irritated by them LOL. Character development was also well done. I think the funniest part was when Ragnoark was unable to absorb the power. I laughed so hard at that part.

I know the main plot is Pandora-centric, but maybe try to add more character development during the main plot. Not everyone will do all side quests and watch all scenarios. I felt Grygen and Azrielle was lacking, at least if you didn't watch their scenarios/do their side quests. Don't get me wrong, you definitely do character development well. Combined with your writing, you can do wonders. I teared up at Lanith/Pandora's side quest and could practically feel Serene's hope faltering.

The assortment of obtainable summons is wonderful. One of my favourite aspects of Umbral Soul is battling. I like battling systems where it's not just mindless attacking and potion. There's a variety to choose from and play around with. Each summons and party member have their pros and cons. Though as others has said, Pandora's healing skill unbalances battling mechanics a bit. Even the summons/characters that seem useless have their uses. I didn't think much of Damien's battling capabilities at first, but actually, Marionette is perhaps one of the most useful moves in-game (at least for me) and his skills does good damage. Lanith isn't the most versatile since most of her skills rely on the enemy's gender, but Succubus' Soul can heal a lot of HP at a small cost. Minor complaint: I did feel the battles were too easy, though. Perhaps you allow the player to adjust difficulty level? I never felt any of my party members were at risk of dying.

(Side note: Infernal Awakening + Marionette + Succubus Soul + Dark Overclock Gryger is just pure OP. Damien + Gryger combo is hands down the best battle combination.)
(Side note 2: Do buffs stack up? For example, if I use Infernal Awakening twice on the same summon/party member, does it stack?)
(Side note 3: How did Chimera evolve in Catastrophe? They're two completely different things)

Overall, I would highly recommend this amazing game. It might just be one of the best RPG Maker games. My biggest complaint would be when Umbral Soul ended. I just felt a crushing disappointment and sense of sadness. I look forward to your sequel and future games! It'd be a waste if you didn't continue game-making. I hope you don't mind long posts. I had a lot to say, haha. You really deserve something for making such a marvelous game. I think I'll make fan art. I hope you look forward to it.

(Just a little bit of criticism: there are scenes where I feel the dialogue is very cheesy. Take the scenes with Serene, for example. Maybe the cheesiness is part of her character? I won't deny your writing is excellent, though. A bit of polishing and it should be good!)

(P.S What ever happened to Lonnie?)
Same! In my first run, there were points where I uncontrollably smiled, normally when people were dying horribly. I swear I'm sane. Totally.

Yeah, I was actually looking for a game like this, and it was the first game on the list.

I'm glad you weren't too offended by my little comment. If you want, I can give you a list of all the mistakes you've made (tsk tsk tsk)?

And I'm not sure if this is me or you, but when I use shift to view statistics of an enemy with more than one on the screen it displays a different one.

Hazardous spoiler element inside, compound name "Final Boss":
Like vs Aegis, Hope will display the stats for Salvation.
Amina- Can't...handle...this much joy at once. Seriously, I think I have premature wrinkles around my mouth from smiling so much lately. I blame you people. I hope you like reading long posts too, because this one's gonna be a doozy. In fact, it's so huge I'm going to put it in a spoiler tag and break it up using titles.

Character dialogue

It's great to hear how much you appreciated all the dialogue and alternate scenes. It was a lot, and I do mean a LOT of work, but it was also quite a bit of fun to make. At first I thought "Maybe I'm having everyone talk too much," but then I thought, "Nah, that's stupid. This is my game and I'll do what I want!" I'm glad there are other people out there who enjoy conversations between characters as much as I do. That's one of my favorite aspects of the "Tales" games.

Those two Jerks

Yeah, unlike the others, Azrielle and Gryger's pasts aren't expanded upon without doing some digging into the extra content. During development I had been thinking that I was bombarding the player with enough heavy backstories, so I cut back on making Azrielle and Gryger's stories part of the main campaign. I AM adding something that will delve a bit deeper into Azrielle's past for the ultimate edition though.

Balancing an overpowered villain

I wanted to make playing as a villain feel different from playing as a hero, so I made items almost useless in an attempt to force the player to rely on their party's various overpowered abilities. Of course as they are now, the villains are a bit TOO overpowered, especially if you find the right combos. Funny story about Damien; in the first build he was nothing more than a gimmick character, almost completely useless against bosses. After talking with a friend I came up with the idea of giving him Marionette and Last Performance, making him one of the best characters in the game in my opinion.

Lanith's charming abilities are fairly situational and gimmicky, but her true strength lies in the fact that she is one of the only summons that can both heal and dish out a fair amount of damage. You aren't the first one to request a difficulty setting. I'll have to see if there's a script out there that can do the job that doesn't bump up against any of the other 45 scripts I'm using. I will say that the ultimate edition will be harder, since Pandora will no longer have D-Medic and enemies will be slightly beefier. I've offset this change by greatly increasing the amount of HP Shadow Shell recovers, at the cost of mobility.

That combo sounds brutal. As you know, Gryger has the potential to wreck EVERYTHING as long as your team setup supports him. It sounds like you found the ideal combo to push his effectiveness to the max. And yeah, you can have up to two buffs on any character at any time. When you buff the second time, the ATK/DEF/MATK/MDF icon should change to reflect this.

This isn't even my Final Form

The idea behind Chimera's evolution is that it goes from being a random mishmash of animals to something slightly more stable looking. You can tell from the various heads on Catastrophe's body that it's a monster made up of several creatures, but after reaching its final form, it's far less chaotic. Think of it as third form Freiza going to final form Frieza.

More to Come

Don't you worry, there's much more to come, and I'm excited to share the sequel's story with you in the future. It's taking all my self-control not to blab it right now! Game making is a lot of fun for me and seeing it inspire joy in others makes me want to do it even more, so yeah, ol' Wheelman's gonna be on the game make train for a long time to come.

The cheesiness is real. It's extremely real. I designed Serene to be a naive, happy-go-lucky mary sue, so her sugary demeanor is indeed part of the story. I needed a character that could represent humanity's light side and show that not all humans are full of fear and hate.

Possible spoilers

In regards to Lonnie, several of the story arcs in this game were left unfinished, as it's meant to be a prequel. Her fate will be revealed in the sequel, so you can look forward to that. As for me, I'll be looking forward to that fanart with eager anticipation. That people even consider this game worthy of fan art is just mind-blowing to me. If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go squeal in a corner while hopping up and down for the next three to five minutes.

HalfNerd- Offended? PFFT! What kind of dev would I be if I didn't learn from my mistakes? If you could send me a mail with everything you found wrong that would be huge. It has nothing to do with the fact that I don't want everyone here to find out how badly I goofed. Nothing at all. I think I know what's going on with that enemy statistics screen though. Working on a fix.
Alright, I'll send you all the spelling errors I can find. Iirc, during my second run (this one), up to Reddin, I think the only ones I saw were "aquired" which is actually acquired (English is weird) and obviously thier. You actually taught me that harbinger is not harbringer, like I thought it was my whole life.
See that? We're all learning! Good stuff. (Don't tell my old English teacher.) Watching the playthroughs on youtube allowed me to catch a lot more spelling errors that have been corrected for the next version, so big thanks to Owmeeye and TangledLion for those.
Saying that, I'll probably never email you about spelling errors. Chronic Procrastination Syndrome, unfortunately :P
Okay that's apparently a thing oops
Bah, don't worry about it! I appreciate the sentiment anyway. I almost forgot to mention LaMasquerade sent me a document listing several text errors a while back, so the next version has been cleaned up quite a bit thanks in no small part to him. If you're reading this, thanks bud!
Ugh, I can't believe you played with me like that! /s
Maybe you should get Grammarly :P
Let’s suppose you’re writing a really important email to a colleague or a post on Facebook that all your friends will see…
Just had a theoretical idea:
Idk if you've ever played Dragon Quest, but in it, pressing a button would make a character speak in a reaction to e.g. a lamp you interacted with.
Now idk if this is possible because I'm too much of a cheapskate to buy RPG Maker, but what about it? So if you interacted with an NPC, pressing like the c button would make Damiem etc. say something.
You're actually trying to think of ways to make the game MORE complicated!? You remind me of a younger me. No, scratch that, actually you remind me of the current me. If that were possible, it would require a script, and I'm not sure one exists that could pull it off. If there was however, it would mean adding 3-5 more event pages to every interactive object in the game. Don't get me wrong, I'm crazy, but I'm not THAT crazy.

There is a special something I'm adding that will expand the dialogue options a bit though. Previously, only Lanith would make a comment during a boss battle, but now every summon that can talk will make a comment. I'm also tweaking the demons in the castle so that their dialogue changes depending on which summon you have with you besides just Lanith.
I think my game's bugged.
I beat the advanced arcfall monster tournament, but I can't enter the demon gauntlet tournament no matter what I do.
Oh right, don't worry, that's not a bug. Well, it kind of is, but it's not game breaking. You won't be able to enter the Demon's Gauntlet until a certain point in the story. If you beat the other tournaments before that point, your quest journal will tell you your next step is to beat the gauntlet, even though it's too soon. Proceed through the main story and everything should go smoothly. Yet another little issue that's been fixed for the ultimate edition.
Chiming in yet again to share some final thoughts now that I finished.

I was rather torn about what kind of resolution I actually wanted. Killing all the dark mages obviously ain't right, and I wanted to bring the demons who wanted to leave the abyss through the portal to have a better life... but plunging the world into darkness with Ragnarok's rebirth and slaughtering countless innocents isn't really something I could get behind.

But then they KILLED LANITH. When that happened, I was 100% on board with kill 'em all. Also, seriously, what the fuck Lanith - taking the bullet like that was a total dick move. You and Pandy talked about this like one sidequest ago. Also also, I managed to beat Athena with just Pandy(lvl44 - I saved my level up potions until really late for maximum effect)+Lanith(lvl29) - I used my two life tonics to do it. But rather than making her much harder so beating her is impossible, I think you should just have her go insane if we beat her and then we fight dark athena or something as a stupid hard hidden boss.

Anyways, when Pandy decided not to blow the world up and saved Lanith, I was obviously quite happy, but wondering what now? Bad quasi-fanfiction of what I was thinking the ending would be ahead!:

My guess was that Aegis would be complete, and unstoppable, but now Pandy would be the one to take the bullet (Her parents died for her, that other guy died for her, Lanith almost died for her...now it is her time to sacrifice herself, to protect the lives of all dark mages).

The aegis crystals are spread out in a pentagon, they each fire a beam of light power to the center, which blasts up into the sky where it will eventually split into thousands of lasers that will obliterate all dark mages. Pandora has draconus fly her into the sky, launching her into the path of the rising laser to intercept it before it can scatter. She falls towards the mega light superweapon's beam, and gathers her darkness. A kamehameha battle ensues. At first she can barely hold her own, and the aegis's blast is pushing her higher into the sky. Her darkness isn't enough. She asks Ragnarok to connect her to the darkness inside the hearts of everyone else, so she can feel their pain, their suffering, and add it to her own. This causes her Kamehameha to push aegis's back, and as it does so Pandora begins to descend from the sky towards where aegis is on the ground. The distance between the two decreases until she is just above aegis and the sources of the two beams are point blank - BOOM, mega explosion.

Pandora's companions are knocked out, aegis is destroyed - and the darkness is burned out of Pandy's heart which leaves her catatonic, unable to feel anything.

Ragnarok discards her 'cuz she's burnt out and useless, and then he corrupts the crystals that powered aegis and revives. He starts seriously fucking shit up.

A fragment of Serene's soul was imprinted onto the crystals back when she used them, and that soul fragment got lazered into Pandy when she had her kamehameha duel with Aegis. The Serene fragment reaches the "child" inside Pandora's mind while she's unconscious, telling her that it's not too late, she can have a happy future with Lanith, she can build a new life etc. Serene says she has to go now, but she's leaving her light with Pandy, along with the light that was always inside her all along.

Pandy wakes up, and she's MAD - but this time she's mad at Ragnarok - rekindling her dark magic. She's pissed at Ragnarok for leading her down the path of a life filled with nothing but bitterness and anger.

Pandy tells Ragnarok that their deal is done, she revived him, she no longer owes him for saving her life. She tells him there's enough darkness in the hearts of men as things are, and that she won't let him create any more She demands that he go back to the abyss.

Ragnarok is pissed that Pandy is betraying him. ("Foolish human! This is the hour where I will give you your vengeance! Why do you oppose me?"). Pandy tells him to fuck off, that she can get her own vengeance, she doesn't need him, and she's tired of him fucking with her life.

She blasts Ragnarok with her magic - "Fool! Darkness cannot hurt me. AGH! This power, it BURNS. You've combined light magic into your dark magic??? That isn't possible!"

Ragnarok tells her that her new trick is still pointless, she can't hope to beat him alone. Pandy replies that she isn't alone, and summons Lanith. Ragnarok calls her a naieve little girl, and tells her those are HIS summons, and he summons draconus.

If draconus isn't in his final form, Ragnarok gives him a mega powerup and makes Pandora+Lanith fight him, and kill him.

If draconus is in his final form, he turns on Ragnarok, and Pandora+Lanith+Draconus fight Ragnarok. After doing enough damage to "win", Ragnarok gets annoyed and sends Draconus back to the Abyss.

After that battle, Ragnarok tells Pandora that she is a fool. He will show her how much glorious power she could have had. He revives her 4 allies, and imbues them with mega awesome darkness power to make them his ultimate apostles. He commands them to destroy the heretic (Pandora).

Pandora has the time to make 1 of them come to their senses. Her light magic fights back the darkness of her selected party member, restoring them to normal. She isn't strong enough to do that for all four of them though, so a 3 on 3 fight starts - Pandy and her chosen ally and Lanith (or a different summon if she changes midbattle) versus the 3 mega darkness apostles.

Pandy and her team win the fight (unless they don't and get a game over ;p) and she restores the other 3 to normal, telling them "Your darkness is your own, not Ragnarok's". Azrielle is obviously the hardest to convince, but Pandy tells him that Ragnarok has done nothing but use him. Ragnarok could have made life better in the Abyss, but never cared. She tells Azrielle that if they defeat Ragnarok and absorb the power they will be able to make the portals themselves. They don't need him.

Ragnarok gets real pissed that the apostles failed, that humans are useless - even demons like Azrielle are weak and failed him. He vows to annihilate EVERYTHING. Final battles begin.

After victory, Pandora & co establish a new kingdom of demons, darkmages, monsters and anyone else crazy enough to live there. Of course the old kingdoms will be at war with them (which satisfies Grygar immensely), and things aren't easy by any means, but Pandora is happy trying to build a new life and place where everyone is free from persecution.

As you can see, I'm a bit cheesy =P. As for what ACTUALLY happened, I'm a bit iffy on it.

Things make sense for Azrielle, who actually uses his power to do some good. I can see him starting up a demon nation, I don't think he's too power hungry so he won't try to conquer the whole world. He'll just carve out his fiefdom and defend it fiercely. I don't think he'll bother trying to wipe out ALL humans, he'll just murder all the ones in his new domain.

The ending also makes sense for Gryger - I'm sure he'll have loads of fun. At least, for a while. Soon he'll tire of weak opponents.

After that it gets iffy. What is Damien doing when he goes in that church? In my head I'm thinking he's like "Yo nuns, I'm a darkmage, y'all still love me?" and if they reject him he's like "Actually that's okay, I can just take over all your bodies anyways." and he surrounds himself with puppets.

Marcus, I really have no idea. I guess he just studies demons and starts writing bestiaries and stuff?

And the biggest problem I have with the ending is that it doesn't feel like any sort of ending for Pandora. The fuck is she gonna do now?

If there wasn't going to be a sequel I would say this was a terrible ending, but I guess since there's a sequel I just hope that we get a better picture of Pandy's future from that. I hope I don't sound too negative - I did enjoy the final scenes, especially Lanith's revival. When the music for the first Aegis battle started I just smiled and listened to it, then I turned the volume up and listened some more. And not just because it was a good track, but because I wanted to relish that feeling of "this is it! the end of this great game! savor it!". The Phase 3 Aegis (corrupting the crystal) was also very cool and well done. So were all the final conversations with the team before fighting Aegis.

Anyways, that's all I have to say, I'll end with a final "Thank you & great game!"
Oh my goodness, I wish you could see me right now. I've got a dopey grin on my face a mile wide. My face hurts from smiling and my stomach hurts from laughing. That was a great story. (Don't read it if you haven't finished the game! Spoilers!) Sure, it's super cheesy, but cheese makes everything better (like pizza for example), so I don't see how that's a problem.

Spoiler talk below people. Shield your eyes! If you haven't finished the game and are tempted to look anyway, stand firm, you're stronger than that!

Well now that that's out of the way...It sounds like you wanted a final resolution to the story; a climactic grand finale that brings all the characters' tales to a definitive end. The one you described sounds incredible, and certainly something worthy of the grand finale, though it would be a nightmare to actually execute. Still, it sounds so exciting I might end up making it into a scenario. The actual ending was meant to be a cliffhanger for the sake of the sequel. While it might've seemed like its own contained story, Umbral Soul is actually nothing but setup. The real payoff will come in the sequel, where everyone's stories come to an end...for better or worse.

The final boss came out better than I had even imagined. I managed to find the perfect music, the perfect final boss images, the perfect battle backgrounds, it just all came together very nicely. I wanted the last battle to scream: "Hey, the game's ending! Get serous or you're going to die!" Pandora's journey won't end until she's completed her goal of resurrecting Ragnarok, so she'll be using all the resources at her command to ensure that happens. As for your predictions for the other characters...I won't let anything slip, even though I really, and I mean REALLY want to.

I'll answer your thank you with another thank you. "Thank you for playing my game!" I can't wait to share the sequel with you, though there's a lot of work to be done. It's going to be glorious my friend. GLORIOUS!
You really don't need to thank people for playing your game - that's like buying me an ice cream cone and thanking me for eating it :3

Anyways, I'm glad you liked my "scenario" but don't waste any time on it, make that sequel!! ^^
Ha! You do have a point there. Now that I think about it, creating a scenario like that would be moderately to severely impossible. The story for the sequel has already been planned out, so I hope you enjoy the true grand finale.
