Over two hundred years ago, the five heroes defeated the god of darkness; Ragnarok, in a climactic struggle for the fate of the world. Banished back to the realm of darkness known as the Abyss, the threat of the evil god had finally been put to rest once and for all...or so they thought.

Umbral Soul follows the story of Ragnarok’s loyal servant, Pandora, who joins her master in a quest to conquer the world and reclaim his lost power. In order to shroud the world in eternal darkness, they will have to find and recruit new allies, build an army of powerful monsters, and raise a force strong enough to crush anyone who dares to oppose them. Heroes, generals and rival overlords all stand against them. Do you have the power to make the world yours?

Pandora
A powerful dark sorceress with the ability to call forth monsters from the Abyss and enslave them to her will. Her burning hatred for the world and its people leads her to follow Ragnarok with unwavering loyalty.

Ragnarok
The god of darkness, who seeks dominion over the human realm. Once an extremely powerful being in the form of a monstrous demon, he has now been reduced to a mere soul. He wishes to plunge the entirety of the human realm into darkness, in part out of spite for his counterpart; the goddess of light, Lumielle.

Lanith
Beautiful, deadly, and self absorbed to a tee, Lanith is a succubus with a never ending hunger for the lifeforce of men. Having served under Pandora since she was only a child, she has a knack for getting under her skin, and does so whenever the opportunity arises.

Damien
A deeply twisted and sadistic young man, Damien loves nothing more than manipulating others and watching them squirm. While he has kept his true nature a secret, Ragnarok’s uprising marks the perfect opportunity for him to cut loose and have some fun...by killing as many enemies as possible.

Azrielle
The lord of all demons, who is fiercely loyal to Ragnarok and possesses an extreme, seething hatred for humanity. After failing to aid his master in conquering the world the first time, he has no intention of repeating the same mistakes again.

I'm back, baby!

Hey everybody, hope you've been doing well. I'm pleased to say I was just recently discharged from rehab, so at long last after over a month I'm home. They ran a whole lot of tests on me and I had several surgeries, so I am finally no longer in danger of croaking. That means I'm finally free to double down on game development, when I'm not stuck sitting in some doctor's office that is. Thank you all for your well wishes, they went a long way towards improving my mental health through that strenuous time. Welp, that's enough chatter. I've got some game making to do.

I actually want to play this game. That´s not a common occurence for me. How far done are you?
What? You want to play the game?! That's madness! The game is about 75% done at the moment. I initially didn't intend to release a demo before the game was finished, but I think you guys deserve at least something to work with other than a bunch of screenshots. It'll be a short demo, just to give you a feel for the story and gameplay. I'll try to get it up by the end of the day. Thanks for your interest, buddy!

Woah, this looks pretty cool! Playing as the villain is a neat idea that I wish more games would explore. I'm liking everything I'm reading and seeing here, and I can't wait to check out how this all plays out!

Sounds cool! I'll second Nova's sentiment where I too like playing the baddies!
Thanks for all your patience ladies and gentlemen, a short demo is now available for download! The demo covers the story prologue and up to the end of the initial forest, so yeah, not all that long. Still, it should give you a small taste of the combat and story. The full version has many more features than those displayed in the demo and currently clocks in at about 6 hours with sidequests, so it'll be a good meaty game.Alright, that's enough chit chat, I've got some game making to do!
Wow I'm loving the wonderful arts and the very dark aesthetic of the game! xDD Great job!! xD

Amazing Demo, I got tons of fun! Got no bugs, no complains either! Looking forward to the finished version :D
I am falling in love with the character art, especially the monsters. Definitely going to try out the demo when I have the time.
Hi I streamed this game on my Twitch channel if you're interested in some (slightly harsh) feedback.

Dude, I watched your video and loved it. "What is this, a game for sociopaths?" Hilarious stuff there.

And yeah, the beginning is fairly text-heavy, as this is a character-driven game with quite a bit of story, the biggest info dump being at the beginning of the game. I've been working on elongating dungeons to spread cutscenes further apart, but there are still quite a few in there.

The random japanese is an annoying little glitch that stems from one of the battle scripts I'm using. Hopefully I'll be able to track down the line of code responsible and take care of the problem.

Thanks for giving the demo a go and sharing that vid, Hunting Swan. I hope you'll give the full version a spin once it's completed.
Hey Wheelman, glad it was useful for you!

Yeah, keep in touch, I'd totally try a revamped version in the future.

Regards.

You got it bro, thanks for your interest!
Great game, the demo is nearly flawless I'd say.
Keep this up and this could turn out to be a 10/10 or close.
Looking forward to the full release.

Hey thanks Clangeddin, glad you enjoyed the demo. Rest assured I am working hard to meet...no, surpass everyone's expectations!

*Whistles*

I've only just finished the prologue, but I have to at least comment on the amount of effort you've put into this project. Great work on this! I really liked how it felt like a final battle in the beginning, complete with that "power of friendship" seal of approval. In a different game, it really could have been authentic.

Light spoilers for the first five minutes. I hide this because it's something I think people should experience for themselves first:

I really appreciate how there was no overly super move that beat Ragnarok in one hit just to get on with the story. Combine that with the fact that it was a game about playing as the villain, I was actually expecting to win that fight with the heroes, even after Jeremy went all holy berserk on me. As my health went down little by little, I started to realize that I wasn't going to win, which I imagine is the thought processes of many bosses. Serious props to you, man. That was awesome!

(And no, I didn't check the story and character description since the last time I commented here. I knew I was going to play it as soon as I found the time, so I didn't bother to refresh myself on the overview.)

A lot of effort was put in places that, frankly, you didn't have to. And that's deserves serious respect. As soon as I have some more free time, I'm going right back in to play more!

A few minor issues I picked up:

- When you showed the hero's collapse, Ernest's (Jeremy) sprite was replaced with Ralph's.
- Lianna's mother's face... needs some work. It's painfully obvious how edited they were, and it clashes really hard with the other portraits and sucks out the immersion quite a bit.
- When Ragnarok was debuffed, his name was squished pretty heavily. Isn't there any way to move that icon?
Hey, thanks for the feedback, Nova. I can't believe I got Ernest and Ralph's sprites mixed up! Blasted orange haired heroes...this is why it's good to have more than 2 eyes on a project.

The faceset for Lianna's mother was a huge challenge, since I had to come up with a character that looked similar to, yet older than the female sorceress from the dark heroes character pack. I initially didn't give the parents faces at all, but I felt like doing so would make them feel more like people and less like NPC's.

The squishing icon issue is the unfortunate result of the HUD script I'm using. If a character has too many statuses, their name gets removed altogether. Frankly it annoys me too, but there's no way I can see around it that wouldn't involve me ditching that HUD...and I really, REALLY like that HUD.

Spoiler alert regarding the first battle
I'm overjoyed to hear your thoughts on the Ragnarok battle, as it sounds like the experience I was trying to convey came through nicely. I wanted players to feel the pure rage that comes with fighting a party with a healer who spams their strongest healing spell, the sense of power that comes from altering the arena itself, and the overall "final bossness" of having an OP second form. It was a pain in the butt to put together, but I'm glad it paid off.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts dude, and I'm glad you're having a good time. I hope you continue to enjoy yourself, and don't worry, I'm working hard at getting this game completed. Though it doesn't feel like work when you're having so much fun!
Also just wanted to say I tried the demo of your game about a couple months back or so. It was really good and I've been pumped. Can't wait til the full version comes out! :3 I'd get it straight away. xD It's definitely very unique.

Sidenote:
When you commented on my game I was all 'Omg it's that guy with the good game!' XD

Ok...no pressure. No pressure. Must live up to the public's expectations. Dagnabit, I need a paper bag to breathe into!

All kidding aside, I hope you enjoy my game as much as I enjoyed yours. I'm taking some extra time to add in a little more razzle dazzle and improve some of the mapping, but I'm almost done. I should be done by the end of the year at the latest as long as things go according to plan. Thanks for the comment, bud!

I can hardly wait over here! I look forward to putting a few more videos on my quite-devoid-of-content-channel.

...

I really need to do stuff more regularly :/
It's always been a dream of mine to have my game up on youtube. I'm flipping out just thinking about it. Where's that paper bag?!
