What is Fear & Hunger

Fear & Hunger is a horror dungeon crawler set in the dark and hopeless dungeons of fear and hunger. Four misfortuned adventurers dwell deeper and deeper to the darkness and uncover the secrets this ancient fortress holds inside. The fortress works as an ancient nexus for different planes of existence. The depths are in an eternal turmoil as both old and new gods struggle for power, it’s up to the players to choose their position and stance in all of this.

The game is a hybrid of survival horror and dungeon crawler genres with its influences ranging from Silent Hill to Nethack. There are roguelike elements to the game as well as a heavy foundation of a j-RPG. Fear & Hunger is heavy on atmosphere and ruthless in its difficulty.

Features:

  • Oppressive and relentless atmosphere

  • 4 different character classes and many additional characters to recruit

  • 9 different endings

  • Different game modes, including a super secret one unlocked upon beating the game

  • Unforgiving and unique gameplay

  • Randomized elements to keep the game fresh with subsequent playthroughs

  • Turn-based Strategic Dismember Combat System

  • Numerous unique gameplay systems

  • Graphical art style mixing pixel art with digital painting

  • Original ambient soundtrack creating the dreary mood

The world of Fear & Hunger is VERY dark. THE GAME IS MEANT ONLY FOR MATURE AUDIENCES! Extreme violence and gore are everyday sights in the dungeons and death is one of the easier ways to go in the game. The game has drug and substance abuse, heavy themes ranging from self-mutilation to sexual violence. None of the themes are taken lightly however. They are all part of the world building and there to create the unique atmosphere where the game measures just how far the player is willing to go in order to survive.

Parts of the dungeon layout, events, loot and enemy placements are randomized with few different variations to keep things fresh with subsequent playthroughs. The game is designed with the classic trial and error formula, so you can expect to start the game over and over again. But as long as you learn from your mistakes, you can quickly find yourself at the deeper levels of the dungeon.

The combat in Fear & Hunger is turn-based akin to classic role-playing games, but with a twist of its own. You can target individual limbs of your enemies to dismember them strategically and thus maximize your chances for survival. However, just the same, enemies can also cut off the arms and the legs of your playable characters if you are not careful. You need to prepare well for every encounter if you wish to stay alive. But don’t forget that running away from threats is often the best solution as well. There are many ways for survival in Fear & Hunger - You can find better equipment, learn different blood and love magic, fuse characters into each other, pray different gods, talk your way out of battles, meet new party members, snipe enemies from distance, use traps to disable them… and so on. The Idea is to use what you got at your disposal and be creative with it.

Featured Game Give Away!

Oh wow! Fear & Hunger got on the front-page? Wasn't expecting this.

RMN, you have my deepest gratitude! RPG Maker community has a dear place in my heart, despite not being that active member around these parts of internet. I actually started my game making on Don Miguel's forums ages ago and it had a very big impact in me eventually returning to this stuff. And that's also the reason I've stuck with RPG Maker, despite what 99% of internet tells me. So getting featured here really means a lot to me.

To celebrate the front-page spot, here are few free Steam keys for the game. First ones to get them, gets them, sorry :/ Please don't hog more than one!

Would love to hear what everyone thinks of the game. It's a bit divisive and I don't mind even heavier criticism.

I hope your thesis goes over well.

thanks! ^.^
It's a good excuse to keep making the game, even if I should be writing text and studying the subject.
Im Downloading the Demo, it seems good.

Great!! Hopefully you'll like it! :)
That was really something, I did the survey and all. I played through the game 4 times going as far as I could but never really feel like I made any progress. The game has a very oppressive sense of hopelessness that I've never felt in a game before. Although I have some major issues with it, you've seriously tapped into something very real with this. And you were not kidding when you said there were disturbing themes...
Hey there, I got this earlier today and my by and i started playing it. I decided to make a video review of the game on my youtube channel. I'll post the link below, but just know, we were being pretty hyper critical with some of the stuff. We both actually like the game the more we played it. We were put off by a few things, but that's how it'll be with everyone. Anyways, thanks for a fun experience!

Wooww this is so awesome!! Thanks for the video treatment! You weren't even that critical, I think every problem you pointed out was pretty fair. This was super helpful for me too - to see the game being played from outside perspective. I definitely need to tighten up the experience, especially the cave area - There's actually more to the area than what you saw :) I also got few good ideas from your playthru that I'm gonna implement to the game! Funny how you also came to right conclusion about alcohol helping with the fear - the thing is I forgot to make it functional for this demo :P

BTW, you got a nice Let's Play dynamic going on, I enjoyed your commentary really!

It's awesome to hear back from you so soon! I wanted to point some things out. Both my buddy and I vouldnt find anyway to partner up with the bunny faced guy (the one who asks, looking for a partner?) I'm not sure if you can recruit him or not, but his text implies that you can. We were thinking to recruit him and choose the "make love" option in the circle. There also seem to be a few spots near the edges of walls, especially in the courtyard areas, that the player can walk over. Using Yanflys region restrictions would help fix that issue.

Yes I've noticed few places where you can walk over walls too. I really had to rush this game out, because I had to leave for travels, and thus I implemented many of the features during the last night/morning before releasing the demo. It's a shame really, because the "love corner" serves no real function at the moment. If you want a partner to make love to - I suggest resurrecting a ghoul buddy ;)

Thanks for the tip with Yanflys region restriction, I'll check it out!

Also I noticed how puzzled you were with the fear mechanic. Fear deteriorates your Mind. Mind is used with the few magics this game has. Some monsters, like one boss monster in the demo also causes fear. If you light up torches and candles, you can fight against fear.
The sprites are well drawn, also like that you can pick the character`s name.
You found dirt and a pine cone! This game gives you useless items that can`t help you survive.Skill checks(such as searching book shelves) come in the form of heads or tails.Died on my first play through fighting that monster.Tore both my arms off.
Can`t wait for this game to come out.

Beta testers!? No, this game needs a goddamn exorcist!

I finally got to try this (really, I can thank Nier: Automata's 2-layer download-install taking 10 bloody hours!).

It has a really good atmosphere and some good hints at lore sometimes. More on that later. The graphics and sounds are excellent. Combat is fun and it's nice to be disabling enemies. Although one of the big guys still had his way with me even with his stinger removed. I give him a gold star for effort.

It's likely the darkest game I've played that didn't come from Japan, but I never felt it was intentionally trying to offend. Yes, even when I was leaking blood out my anus, I wasn't offended. I was pre-occupied with trying to find a way to stop it.

For drawbacks, I get that it's a dungeon crawler but I think there may be too much random. I had runs that went pretty swimmingly and I had runs where I was dead at the door. It seemed to be there was no in-between. I'd prefer it if it were maybe 80% skill/judgement/memory and only 20% random. IMO everything being random doesn't add to the oppression enough to offset the annoyance it causes.

Also, there should be a way to get back to your game quicker if it's the type of game where you're dying all the time.

Still though, I can't wait for the final version.
Thanks for the nice feedback everyone! ^.^

@Dragnfly, haha, gold star for the effort huh? I never even thought of that scenario of someone cutting his stinger off and then him taking the player to cells afterwards. Gotta pay more attention to such details!

You got good points with the criticism! There already is some manipulation on the odds of getting certain items and such - it's not completely random that is, but I agree that randomization needs to be toned down on some areas. I will also make it more skill based, because let's face it - it sucks getting one-hit killed all the time... sometimes it's ok though <_< .... >_> .... <_<

I'll also add a skip button to the intro as the intro is also going to get longer with some story added in. So hopefully that will make it fast enough to jump into a new game. I'll also try to make the whole experience a little bit more compact and tighter, so you can start progressing faster too.

oh and I'm jealous of your Nier: Automata.. I think I'm gonna go buy it too once I get some money :O
hey, Interesting game so far! I actually Had some questions...and uh, stuff. Anyway, Found a bug, (at least I think It's a bug) After my first death, I started a new game and was no longer able to target anything but torsos. Also, I was wondering if you could share the tabletop stuff you based this on or whatever it was, because I know some people who might actually give it a try~. Also If you need a proofreader or betatester let me know, I'm a native english speaker and way too good at breaking things!...Way too good

Edit- A thought, Perhaps add an ambush system, where if you manage to approach something from behind or otherwise undetected, You get a free turn? Sure, It's a dirty Move, But you do what you gotta to survive, right?

Edit 2- Also I don't think whiskey does anything? Is it broken? Unfinished? or...What?
Breaking things is an amazing talent. Never lose that, even if you´re in a marriage.

Anyways Orange, your game looks very well done. I´m gonna download it and check it out. You know, give it a whirl. See what body parts shoot out.

That's a new bug, haven't heard of it before. You can also target the body parts with your mouse, so are you sure the cursor wasn't on top of the screen?

The tabletop stuff was all made up by me.. and you are pretty much looking at the material it contained (at least a small part of it). I don't have much experience from 'real' tabletop RPG's, so I'm not sure what information you need to play by it's rules. The way the game worked was that I was drawing the dungeon/area layout on a paper. Players had their own papers where they kept a list of items, status ailments, magics and such. I used a coin flip for bigger choices, but I also used common sense, like if the player was already really experienced with swords, his attacks would connect even without the coin. It was pretty free-form playing. Not so much looking at statistics as something like D&D might be. I could make a wiki or something about the world, if you are interested. I do have quite a lot thought up.

And hey great! I'll contact you later on for sure! For the next version, I'll have people test it out, before I release the download.

@edit1, yes, I'm already planning for something like that!

@edit2, unfortunately alcohol does nothing yet, it was meant to take away your fear, but I forgot to change few tiny parameters during my last nights of development before the demo release.
Maybe it's just me but the game keeps on closing itself.
It happened 3 times in a row within 3 mins of playing.

A shame that the game itself looks very promising.

Maybe have it also have it so you can combine it with cloth for a sterile bandage that can restore more health or something? Also, How the hell do you kill the guards? I cup off all limbs besides the legs, and it still killed me and proceded to rape me into obvlivion (Literally unfortunately.) Also the goblin...things. It's not possible to win without a bomb is it? as every time I kill one, another appears...And it seems talking doesn't work...Best case you're stuck saying "Kueh~" Forever.

also will it become possible to regrow limbs at any point? I figure Like...There was that one regenerative stuff, and maybe using it with alechemy could eventually make something like that...I dunno, just tossing out ideas and such. by the way, We should make like a discord channel or something for easier communication~
