Hero's Realm: Heroic Edition
I always wanted to publish a game based on everything I enjoyed as a kid. This will be the end result.

Lead four heroes and their teams against the evil forces of Mephistocles, the Lord of Demons in this retro-RPG adventure. Switch between the four heroes as you explore dungeons, ascend towers, spelunk caves, save villages and defeat the forces of evil! Reminiscent of classic NES/SNES-era RPGs, Hero's Realm is a fun romp in old-school RPG nostalgia.

  • Play as 4 powerful Heroes and their customizable party throughout a four chapter story, each with their own skillset & battle commands!
  • Come together in the final fifth to adventure with all four parties - switching between them anytime, even in boss battles!
  • Customize your heroes' party by selecting from 21 unique character classes split between the mage, warrior, and rogue specialties, including unlockable elite and master classes!

  • 25 character classes (12 base classes, 4 hero classes, 6 elite classes, 3 master classes)
  • Over 30 hours of game content and sidequests
  • Classic NES-era and SNES-era RPG gameplay
  • Multi-party switching system
  • Multi-party tactical battles
  • Expansive world map

If you like what I do and have done to date, consider being my patron so that I can continue doing it. A remastered game is just the start!

Skills of an artist (Titlescreen)

So I finally sat down and started learning some basic pixel art (purchasing Aseprite, following some tutorials like finalbossblues and saint11 etc.). I do not have a knack for art. I try, but I know that my works are amateurish. But that's not going to stop me (at least, not yet)!

Anyway, after gaining the bare-minimum in proficiency with Aseprite, I tackled a long outstanding item - the actual titlescreen!

Now, your first impression should be to realize that it bares a shocking resemblance to the mockup that Ocean made for me back in 2018 (omg... 2018... *sigh*)

(comment on it here: https://rpgmaker.net/games/9906/images/81978/)

I mean, I loved it and it was always going to serve as my inspiration. Thanks Ocean!

Shortly after receiving it, in fact, I had created a "composition" in Photoshop using my preferred font (Optimus Princeps).

I had envisioned even back then that the base would be some fantasy-like setting (castles, fields, mountains, or the like), so I cleared out that area. I also LOVED the sword Ocean made (obviously. It is great). You can also see where I was experimenting with a "company" name using a font I made with my own handwriting (yes, my handwriting is that bad). I used one of those handwriting-to-font services. The font name is Gbone btw.

Yesterday (or was it the day before?), I took this base and began in earnest. I flattened the font and neatened up the edges, mocked up some mountains and hills, and a castle.

If it looks familiar, then you know about the Bavarian castle in Germany!

This image formed the basis for my composition and castle layout. I shrunk it down to 320x240 and did a quick trace/freehand on it, and referenced it when I was spriting the details.

Next, I added details to my mockup mountains. I had a lot of fun doing this. Natural scenes at a far distance is my wheelhouse. I also mimicked the style that Ocean made for the font. I think it turned out pretty great, myself. The title really pops.

I then got to work on adding detail to the castle itself. (FYI layers are your friend).

I am not terribly happen with the final result, to be honest. It is quite amateurish. The scale, perspective, colour, balance, lighting, and textures are all off (some a little, some a lot).

I debated (and am still debating, tbh) removing the castle entirely (despite working for hours on it) - I am that dissatisfied with it. I moved it around, tweak things a bit, tried making some forest/trees in the foreground, shrunk it to half-size to see if that helped, even tinted it to see if muting the colours would help. I just don't have the skill or experience to figure out what I need to do to make it better.

I probably shouldn't have tried to tackle something so complex mere weeks after starting my pixel art journey. Ah well. Perhaps I will revisit this titlescreen in the future.

For now - on to battle animations!

Thanks for reading.

Oh, I get it. The overhead tiles that can be walked on too, they've been turned to Same As Hero instead of Above Hero, blocking progress.

Yeah, I saw that you can reset the switch by walking into the INN, so I told Hadriex and it works.

A Hero's Realm remaster SoundCloud is now a thing (for ease of sharing on Twitter)

I have posted 11 tracks there from pianotm and zDS.
Cave and the Town song are my personal favorites of my own work so far.

Thanks guys for the input on the keyboard issue. I didn't know about those potential fixes.

As for the Joker not being able to advance into a Daredevil - yes, that is a bug in my code that would prevent that from happening. It'll take me a bit to fix though and I have to get to work. (It's been a long time since I've looked at the code). I'll make the changes to the Temple of Class Change maps and upload it when I am done, but it won't be until late in the day. I'll post here when it's uploaded.

It's uploaded. Sorry it took so long. (it was a pain to fix, in the end, and a bigger pain to test!)

This bugfix will allow Jokers to change class to a Daredevil at level 20 like they were supposed to be able to.

Get the fix here:
https://rpgmaker.net/games/82/downloads/9271/

Paste the map file into the main folder for Hero's Realm and overwrite the existing file.

I posed a question to my patrons recently about what they might want from me specifically for their patronage. They responded and now I am opening it up to any one else who potentially would be interested. The biggest reward idea being Bigwig's tentative offer to allow patrons to design a monster concept for an in-game enemy.

If this, or things like a custom hand drawn world map from me, is something that excites you, please respond to the poll!

Not really.

...except that the evil guy is now Lex Luthor, it is set in 1890 Texas but in one where aliens from the future handed Genghis Khan advanced tech, and a large race of subterranean intelligent super spiders are attempting to take over the world using cats.

You're remaking this?!? I'm thrilled! I came back to download a few old favorites and find this here. I will be back to see how this is coming!

Well I can't disappoint you, now that you said this. I guess I should get on finishing it then!
It's funny that your latest post mentions taekwondo with your kids...when I first played this game, I was in college, I think? And now I also have kids, one of whom is doing taekwondo. So I totally sympathize in being pressed to find time to work on this. If you can, I'm gonna be very excited :-)

It is tough working on this in 12 minute spurts, sporadically late at night, early in the morning, and secretly while at work, with weeks-long hiatuses.
