Gaming Advice With Professor Know-It-All: A Healthy Mind And Body Equals A More Productive Game Maker

Well…at least it’s better than eating something from Burger King. :P

A Plea: Don't Make Your First Game a Team Game

You’d think that this would be common knowledge to everyone, but, *sigh* alas, it still happens where we get the odd new user from time to time who wants everyone to make his or her game for them without any prior or past works to back it up… The least they could do is offer up some free coupons for Subway, or something. :)

Good article, Uni. It’s nice, simple, clean and full of colorful pictures – just how I like ‘em! And it’s even sweeter because you’ve been involved in some team projects and created a couple of games in the past yourself, so you've been there before, that's for sure.

I don’t know if I would ever consider joining a team personally, as I do like the comforts and flexibility of working alone. But if the right circumstances ever popped up - then you just never know.

Don’t Throw Away That 2k3 Just Yet

Honestly, if you really want to advertise RPG Maker 2003, you should list things it can do VX/XP/ACE can't. Your article pretty much only says to me that 2k3 does work, but the newer ones are still better at it.

Well, to be fair, when I originally wrote this article back then my intention was not to highlight the major differences between what 2k3 could do verses the other RPG Maker engines / etc. but to reassure current and old users of the program that it’s still okay to keep using it and that you shouldn’t make the switch just because this said engine is more current / popular than this said engine is – that’s all it really was for. At the time of writing this article, there was no English Rm2k3 release as of yet and a lot of people, like yours truly, was getting a bit concerned with the newer operating systems being released, like Windows 8 and 10 dropping DirectDraw support that Rm2k3 was pretty much on its way out. But at least with the official Rm2k3 English release and future updates to it over time, Rm2k3 might still have a chance to thrive for at least a little longer.

Either way, the original message still remains the same: just use whatever engine you like and what you’re the most comfortable with and the rest will follow.

Yes that's right, I'm afraid it's already dead.

functionality is one thing, but the price point is another. it's formerly free and currently cheap, and I already see a lot of people in peripheral circles picking it up to fiddle with and make cool things on their own time. I think most of us take access to the full suite of game design tools for granted, but for a lot of people having a cheap, quick, and accessible alternative means a lot, you know?

this is big for me because I'm particularly interested in seeing outsiders and peripheral hobbyists thrive. there are a lot of people who are excluded from participating in game design by one thing or another, and if they have more of a chance to get involved and follow their own aesthetics then that can only make the field more interesting, you know?

Well said, my boy. (Also I'm glad that you decided to come back, mawk.)

I mean, one of the most influential reasons that I got into game creation was because of a program like RPG Maker 2003 where it was free (at the time) to use and it was quite simple to pick up and make something for newbies. It was a great first step for someone who was still currently in high school and didn’t quite have the necessary funds to shelf out for a copy for another game making software tool that might have been just too advanced for me to use and I would have probably had a high chance of just giving up on it. RPG Maker 2003 gives me just enough flexibility to create whatever types of games that I want to make with minimal effort on my end.

I mean, I know that RPG Maker isn’t the most flashy piece of tech around, but it makes me feel that if I can work hard enough and do the best that I can with it that even I could have a game that can rival something made with Game Maker or Unity. It’s the perfect first stepping stone and it’s the perfect tool for someone who just wants to have fun and make something without having to extensively learn how to code or how the engine functions work.

RMN MAY 2015 PODCAST

Jesus that was fast. I literally just posted something a second ago and saw this up on the header.

I’ll give it a listen to later on tonight. Right now, I gotta get ready to go to work soon. :P

April 2015 Podcast: RM2k3 Officially in English!

You could always just do what I do and just create your own fonts and just use them as pictures…buuut I understand that not all people are insane like me. :)

And Liberty make sure that you don’t mistake “kidnapping Kentona” for “killing Kentona”. If he dies – then who’s gonna talk hockey talk with me – Shinan!? Don’t make me laugh!

Oh yeah, I’d love to see Alter A.I.L.A Genesis go commercial along with possibily Rainbow Nightmare too (...if TFT could ever finish it, that is.)

April 2015 Podcast: RM2k3 Officially in English!

@ 41:29 – Mannipplo confirmed.

Also, Shinan, man, you should do more guest appearances! You were hilariously awesome in this! Besides, we need somebody to keep Liberty and Nessy on track when they begin to fall down the wayside and start talking about man-nipples and stuff.

RMN Snews - Issue #23

One day...one day we may have RMN merch for the 4 of you who would actually buy it...

Hey, I’m sure that there’s more of us out there that would go out of their way to buy an RMN t-shirt…or perhaps some RMN underwear… :|

- But this definitely is a pleasant surprise! I used to remember these articles that you posted up years ago! It was always a nice reminder about what the heck was going on back in RMN back in the day, so I’m glad that you decided to write another one of these for ol’ time sakes, considering your busy schedule and all.

This is awesome. We have the return of regular, monthly podcasts from Liberty and Nessy and the return of Snews! What else could you possibly want!? (Well, besides a Hero’s Realm 2.)

And don’t beat yourself up too much about last year; that’s all in the past. Just focus on having a better 2015. Besides, I know that the staff here works rather hard and I can’t expect all you guys to do this and that all the time while still keeping a job, sanity, a social life or a family. I’m just happy that you guys take the time out of your busy schedule to do whatever you do to keep RMN still running and thriving, especially Liberty as of late. (Damn girl’s on crack overdrive.)

And, oooo – questions:

1. What is your personal TODO list? (projects, initiatives, even personal life stuff like 'get a job' or 'finish school' or 'get fit' if you want to share that)

Well I definitely wanna finish patching up Monopoly/Monopolo and re-release it on RMN sometime this year and move on to work on something else, like finishing up Brian Okam’s Free Throw Challenge or work on one of my other projects. Other than that, I love to maybe join a men’s recreational sports team in the summer, like for soccer or basketball, and just meet some new people and have some more fun outside of home and work. I mean, I’ve been practicing and playing mostly by myself for so long…might as well see if I’m good enough against someone else that’s just as equally skilled.

2. How many other RM or dev communities are you active in?

This is the only one. I like to keep it simple with myself and just mostly stick to just one community so it’s easier on me to contribute to the site or get to know everyone better and still have enough time to focus on working on my stuff when I get home and have a decent social life and kick back and relax once in a while.

3. What is your current role at RMN?

Mostly reviewer and article writer as of now, but I’m hoping to change that with the release of some of my games that I’ve been working on for seemingly forever in the future.

4. Are you satisfied with your current participation on RMN?

I’d say yes. I mean, I definitely have been slipping a little bit in terms of posting or submitting anything like reviews or articles as of late, but I’m generally happy with my overall participation level. I mean, I guess I could do a little bit more around here, but baby steps, I guess.

5. Do you feel you are empowered to accomplish what you want to accomplish?

If I could only get over my overzealous perfectionistic personal goals and just relax a little and have a bit more fun and not take things too seriously, like I used to do years ago, I could definitely get a lot more done, especially in regards to game making. I just can’t seem to get over this silly fear when I really should just relax and have fun like everyone else. It’s been a bit better as of late, but it’s really hard sometimes. It’s like I don’t want to do poorly but I also don’t want to fail. It’s really annoying.

6. What are you expecting from me?

…Cookies? (I could use some freshly baked home-made cookies.)

7. What aspects of RMN are you disatisfied with or concerned about? (functionality, trends, certain members, leadership, etc...)

I think RMN is better than it’s ever been in years, and I really wouldn’t change a thing.

(Although that Addit person is starting to get on my nerves.)

8. If you were running RMN, what would you do? Who would you recruit to help you?

Me…? Run RMN…?

(I think WIP would probably shoot himself if that happened.)

Ahhhhh…wow… I actually really wouldn’t know what I would do other than just trying to keep things the old status quo and just keep and an eye out on any possible suggestions, staff morale and site duties, annoying bots / troublemakers and just make it look like I’m actually doing something constructive behind the scenes when I’m actually really not. You know, like what WIP did. :D

(I kid, I kid…)

9. How long do you think you will be with RMN (in any capacity)?

- Until hell freezes over!

10. Is there anything you wish to say?

Meep.

RMN MARCH 2015: REMAKES AND BROKEN HEARTS

I can’t believe that I listened to the whole thing last night - what the hell was I thinking!? I never got anything done because I was so preoccupied listening to the three two of you talk about stuff.

I overall enjoyed it, but the whole two hour format was a bit too long. About halfway through you guys started to tread off a little off the deep end and started rambling on a bit too much, like a couple of seniors at a old senior’s home reminiscing about the “good ol’ times”. But it was also nice to hear a little from our *clears throat* special guest, because this is actually the first time I’ve ever heard this person talk live, so that was good.

And yeah, don’t beat yourself up too much there about the Valentine’s Day game. As long as you can get done whenever you can, I can’t complain.

And I’m actually thinking of maybe throwing my hat in as a future special quest guy in the future, it’s just the whole time zone thing, and you guys being halfway around the world, might pose a couple of problems on my end of things – but I can probably do it!

RMN FEBRUARY 2015: Misaomblr and Bacon Jam

You should get me on as a special guest. I’ll actually show up drunk to do this, I swear. :D

But I’m glad that we’re getting more of these delightful little podcasts, as it was always something to look forward to in the past, mainly just to hear how everybody sounds like in real life and complain about certain things, but it was always something nice to listen to.

I’ll give this a listen definitely tonight while I work on some game making related things. Perhaps it will inspire me.

EDIT: Hey – I got a brief mention for something! And, oooo – new review contest coming soon, yay!

author=slashphoenix
I don't know if anyone would be interested in hearing me make an ass of myself :P

I would. :)

Also don’t get me and Kentona on at the exact same time; all we’ll do is talk about the Leafs and how much that they suck as of late.

Opinion: Stop Rating Demos, It's Unfair...To Completed Games

You know, thinking about it some more, maybe we should all put this to a community vote in the future and see whether or not to decide to change the rules or keep them currently in place. (Maybe you can talk to Kentona about possibly doing that?) I really don’t mind either way; I just don’t want to suddenly start changing demo scores to games that I’ve already reviewed in the past and have those said people suddenly come out of the woodwork and complain about “how come my makerscore is suddenly so low” type of thing. I mean, I don’t want to be THAT evil.
