RPG Maker Cola Podcast #010: A History of RPG Maker and RPGMaker.Net (w/ Archeia, Caz, Craze, Ocean, Liberty)

I haven’t really been paying attention, or even have listened to most of your other podcasts that you have, Cashy, in the past (except for one, I think…), but as soon as I saw the, “We’ll be talking about Gaming World, Shump, and some of the more notorious members there here,” I KNEW that my name *including said game that we won’t speak of here* was going to be mentioned at some point in the podcast. And here at @45:45 – here it is, in all its glory, lol! (I also like how nobody talks about *said game* the game, just the member instead, lol. Well...Nessiah talked about it a bit, so I consider her cool in my books.)

(Also, speaking of Nessiah - man, you really have a good memory for all of these things! I don’t even remember 80% of the stuff of what happened over at Gaming World long ago and you seem to have a photographic memory like if Gaming World was still around today (…hey, wait a minute…)!

Yeah…looking back, when it came to how I promoted *said game* on Gaming World - and RMN, to a lesser extent - I think I misinterpreted my general excitement with unnecessary hype - which is really what it was. I was just overall excited that I was FINALLY going to finish something for once, especially after all of those previous years of bad luck, hard drive wipes, drama at home, that I think I talked about *said game* a lot more than I should have when I really should have just calmed down, worked hard on the project, and only picked key intervals to talk about or discuss about said game. Because too much hype, especially back then (although, to be fair, some people did care about *said game*) can kill a project before it even comes out, especially if it doesn’t happen to deliver on the goods. Although *said game* isn’t particularly a BAD GAME (in my opinion), it just was promoted as if it was the next coming of Christ (which it really wasn’t...).

But, hey, I was excited back then. And I was still a bit of a noob at the time when it came to promoting and talking about certain things, so I learned a lot about what to do and not to do in the future. I mean, everybody that has made a game before in the past, especially first-time projects, have probably hyped up their shit before like mine to a similar extent and was destined to fail too, so I don’t feel too bad now. And, in an ironic sense of fate, if I didn’t promote *said game* like madness like I did back then, most people today wouldn’t even know what *said game* even is and it would probably just be another game floating down the forgotten gaming ganges. Still, nowadays, I keep quiet until the time is right to show something off, like release something events, and such.

And, yeah, it’s sad to think about why Gaming World ultimately failed, but, in some weird way, RMN today basically represents what Gaming World SHOULD have been back then: still focusing on what made it popular and cater to its userbase at the time, which was RPG Maker, but still allowing for games made with other engines to still flourish and promote themselves on the site. So, in a weird way, RMN is basically like Gaming World is in an alternate timeline where they decided NOT to be stupid and try to become something like TigSource or GameJolt was. But, hey, at least leafo managed to somewhat get his wish when he eventually created itch.io. I remember hearing about that long ago and was like, “Huh...that's something.”

Oh, and Craze, I got banned about eight times, I believe, as I still hold the record for the most bans on this site. (Although helazz is starting to catch up on my record as of late, so…shit.)

[RM2K] [RM2K3] "Item Order" Design Advice & Rant

Yeah, I wished an article like this existed back then when I first started making games in RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 because it really would have come in handy.

But, yeah, another idea, especially if you have to re-arrange the items, equipment, etc. lists in the future, would be to use a common event when you you having to go back to every chest, dresser, pot and barrel and NPC in the actually acquire the item and you’re then sticking it in your inventory. That way, if something changes along the way, you can then just quickly go back to the common event and change it to the new position in the items list to save world and having to change it all manually. Of course, for item drops from actual monsters in battle, you’ll still have to change it manually, though.

Hmmm…only six blogs mentioned this time around? That’s not a lot, actually...

I guess we all gotta step up our game a little bit more (figuratively speaking).

RMN JANUARY 2016 PODCAST

I was actually a bit surprised this time around that you guys didn’t manage to derail the entire discussion and were actually on point for the whole entire two hours. (Somebody’s getting better!!! :D)

Anywhooo, I’m glad to see this return after such a long hiatus. I always looked forward every month to hearing you guys prattle on about all the different current events at RMN and what you guys have to say about all of it and I missed it when you guys suddenly got real busy and had to take a break away from doing all of this, so I’m hoping that this is going to start be a regular occurrence again and start popping up every single month or two or so. And it’s also nice to hear a little bit more about all the different types of special guests that pop up, and all.

Either way, good show, you guys. Hopefully we'll see more of these in the near future.

What is Gam Pag?

Lol, you should have just called this whole entire article “Game Page Making For Dummies” (but then again, the potential lawsuit in all that…nah, you did the right thing).

This was a very good read (yes, I read all of it), because I’m getting to the point very soon myself of adding a game page for the first time in almost seven whole years - and I had some inevitable questions that I was going to want answered eventually, since it has been a rather long time since I’ve last done this whole thing. Well, now this article has answered most of my concerns - and I really like some of the new changes that were implemented into the submit game system over time, such as having a profile customization setting and having the game tab options now a clickbox instead of that old scrolling menu system from before (although where’s my board game genre option, you asshats!?)

I guess the only three questions I still have are…

  • #1 - For the date completed field, can you put down something like Q1 2016 or simply just put in a year, like straight up 2016, if you know that the game is coming out sometime that year but not quite sure of the actual full date yet?

  • #2 - If you click on the private profile tab and then the game happens to gets submitted but one of the site staff happen to comment on it in the meantime, will that comment happen to show up in the latest posts section or be completely hidden until the author decides to uncheck it? I know I tried clicking on that option before in the past just to try it out and see if it worked, but I remember it not completely working quite right, as others were still able to comment on it - so does it fully work now?

  • And, #3 - For the pages option where you can add customized page sections for your game (which I already knew that from before), I see that you can add hidden pages that do not appear on the main page but rather can be used for other miscellaneous uses… Do you still receive makerscore for adding more of these said hidden pages? And will these said hidden pages be shown on the notifications section if a user subscribes to it after creating one?

Either way, great article, Liberty. I can tell that this must have taken a long time to write up and do, so you deserve your mini-rest break until then.

Oh, and you should totally add this to the New to RMN? section in the future, as I’m sure that this will help out a lot of newbies, and veteran dumbasses like myself alike when the time comes. :)

Lol. I like how the Rainbow Nightmare one made it on here despite most of the blog being a confusing, drunken ramble of sorts. Still, it got purdy pictures, hyucck!

Good to see that you’re still on top of things, my dear. Some of these blogs I’ve already checked out before, but this is a good list. Very solid.

And so twelve years old Billy became a notorious drunk.

"…Thanks in no large part to Professor Know-It-All, who supplied young Billy here with all the comforts that one needs - including a free ride home!" :D

(…Hey, at least he’s somewhat thinking of the children.)

If you quit a hobby only because there are people who are better at it than you, you won't have anything left to do in your free time, lol.

I wish I had that artistic ability, but not everyone is blessed with that gift.

That’s why you PLOT OUT to destroy them instead with your amazing writing abilities and awesome as fun looking gameplay.

That will teach those graphic whores! :D

How to Blog!

I was kind of half-awake when I wrote that thing, but thanks anyway. :)

I was actually kind of hoping that my fiftieth review would have been featured instead because of its significance – but whatever! I ain’t complaining that much, as makerscore is as makerscore does. Besides, more points equal slightly more lockerspace to store more shit, anyway.
