Opinion: Stop Rating Demos, It's Unfair...To Completed Games
So does this mean now that you’re going to go back to all your previous demo reviews, Maxy, and change them all to the “not rated” status after writing all this? Hmm…
Anyways, opinion noted. I guess it does seem a bit silly to some people on why some reviewers, like yours truly, gives scores to demo versions of games in sort of the same vein as actual completed games, but I only do it because, one, that person gets at least some makerscore for their cause, even if they end up never completing the game or cancelling it in the end, and, B, because I still believe personally that giving a score to demos is still a viable rating scale based on whether or not I’d be stoked to play the full version of that game sometime in the future if it ever gets completed. Every reviewer does it a bit of a different way and what not when it comes to this.
And in any sense, I usually try to stay away from reviewing demos and focus more on completed versions of games unless that person wants any feedback, is for a contest, or hasn’t had a major update in years and has only that one demo build to speak of, or it got cancelled.

Getting Windows XP/7/8 to play older RPGMaker games.
Also, for Windows 8 users that are having any problems running any of the older games, like for 2k or 2k3, Ramza’s article here also has some really nice advice on how to work around some of these issues.
I really haven’t had much of a problem running any of the older games on any of the laptops that I own throughout the house, but the only two things that happen on occasion to me is that, one, in full screen mode the screen will begin to flicker like crazy once and a while every time you decide to move your character sprite (which can be easily amended using Cherry’s “Another Full Screen Mode” if this decides to happen), and, two, the DIRECTDRAW error that pops up once and a while upon start-up (but strangely, for me, it seems to go away the next time I double click on the RPG_RT file again).
Good article. It never hurts to remind everybody about this stuff once and a while; it’s like an annual tradition here.

When was the last time you played an RM95 game?
Come to think about it, I don’t think I have. I probably would have at least tried one of them out by now in one of my drunken stupiders - but what do we have on here, like, only 6 RM95 games? And none of them look that very promising to me… Of course, I could be wrong.
Actually, you know what? For my next year’s resolution, since you just brought it up, I would love to try out and review one of the RM95 games that we have on here, just because it will be RM95’s 20th year anniversary since its initial release. So thanks, Sailerius, for giving me something to do next year. :)

You mean the software equivalent of duct tape and bailing wire on an already quirky engine?
Hey, duct tape can fix anything and make almost anything look even remotely new, even the small crack on my ugly white wall that’s staring right in front of me.

It’s nice to hear so many different solid opinions about the matter, mostly against still using Rm2k3, and what not – but at least they’re still some supporters here that still like using it and all.
I’m guessing that Rm2k3 has probably around another two to maybe three more years tops before there’s a Windows 9 (and maybe a Windows 10, or whatever) that will probably officially "shut the door" on it running it anymore on various devices. Oh well. You can’t fight against the change in times…
- But for now, there’s still life in these old bones. For how long, who knows… But at least we'll enjoy it while we still can. :D

I believe that it really doesn't matter what engine is being used, as long as the developer puts his/her fullest efforts and shows their passion. The game can be a downright enjoyable and nice experience.

One problem that starts to wear down on my patience when your game starts to become too big, it starts taking time for it to process every little change you make to the game to the point where it gets a little frustrating.
Oh, that. I know that feeling when an Event, Common Event, etc. gets too technical and extremely massive that it begins to slow down the editor to almost a crawl and you basically have to sit on your butt waiting for the damn thing to load. Yeah, I’ve been there before, many times.
But I did manage to stumble upon one solution for this that has greatly cut my time of waiting down to almost a tee and that’s by placing a ton, and tons of Wait 0.0’s at the top of the screen before beginning whatever the hell you’re doing. This way, when you bring the event up, it will almost pop up almost instantaneously with almost no to little waiting time.
So whatcha do is make a new event on any map, put a bunch of Wait 0.0’s at the top of the screen if you’re planning on making something quite extensive, create and do whatever you have to, and then just delete all the Wait 0.0’s and then just copy and paste what you’ve done anywhere that you wish. Don’t do it this in a Common Event, though, as it’s much faster (and safer, just in case) to just do this in any normal event. I’ve been able to save a bit of time - and many hardships - by doing it with this method. Of course, the only other way to cut the waiting time down is by making the code a bit shorter or try to break up whatever you’re doing into smaller sequences.

I can’t believe that you still remember that game, Skie, despite the fact that I didn’t get to do too much on it at the time. Other than Strangeluv, you’re probably the only other person that I know that still remembers that game. Maybe one day I’ll bring it back…

(Actually what ARE you working on now? I'm curious.)
Fixing up this and then eventually working on this, and then we’ll see what goes on from there.

True, but at least you finished something. It’s not your fault (well, kinda, I guess) if they don’t have the proper equipment / system specs to be able to run this thing.
I mean, yeah, if multiple people were reporting to me that they simply just can’t run my game(s) anymore for whatever the reason may be then I would either find a way to work around it or just bite the bullet and switch over to something else that’s more practical once I finished with my last game I was working on.
I mean, recently we just had the ability to port over some 2k3 games from Windows to Mac, so anything’s possible, I guess.

I should think your top priority in making a game is for people to be able to play it.
The top priority should be to actually finish your game(s) first then worry about all that other stuff later.

And here I was under the impression there was a new version of 2k3.
Oh, I wish.
Don’t Throw Away That 2k3 Just Yet
Oh yeah, of course, if you were new to the whole RM scene then I would definitely recommend that person using one of the newer RPG Maker engines that are available to start, since more or less likely that engine’s going to be around for a whole lot longer compared to something like 2k or 2k3. This article was written for more of us old has-beens in mind that have been around for a while and like still using 2k / 2k3 and are just worried that whatever we make in those types of engines now, no matter how visually stunning it may look or how it may stack on paper that they won’t be taken as seriously anymore simply because the engine is just too old or whatever the reason may be.
And yes, there will come a time when a lot of us will simply have to move on and go with the current flow - like the rest of you guys - but, in the meantime, Rm2k / 2k3 still has its good merits and will probably still be a factor for another couple of years. And besides, if you still like making games with 2k / 2k3 and still enjoy making them on those engines – then that’s great, more the power to you. Besides, when it comes to pretty much any game that’s on here, whether it be made in RPG Maker or not, if the game looks good, sound impressive, and it’s something that I may enjoy, then I don’t care what it’s made in. I think that’s what I was trying to imply here.
Y-Yeouch!!!
I need a tissue now. :P
Life has told me otherwise.
I mean, it’s suddenly the “cool thing” nowadays to smoke weed and get absolutely trashed but that does that I mean I want to do it too like everybody else? No, and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one.

New users aren't likely to download a game made with tissue paper when they could download a game made with ruby.

How to write 300 words!
Is it really that hard for some people to write more than a 300 word review these days? Well, I guess it could be if the game they’re reviewing is like 10 minutes in length and there just isn’t that much to say about the experience. I know I’ve had a couple of those in the past, and it is a bit difficult to fill in the blanks, I’ll admit.
Also, for scoring demos, I’m one of those people who like to give a score on a demo. I know down the road it might hurt the game’s overall score and reputation by it, but it’s also nice for the creator(s) to collect a little makerscore in the meantime and seeing how their game stacks up so far overall. So I guess it’s good in both ways. I don’t usually play a lot of demos, but I’ll still score ‘em.
Anyways - good article there, Libby. It’s nice to see you do something for the kiddies once and awhile around here. :)

On First Projects
I wonder what the percentage of people on here whose very first project they ever worked on was actually the first one they completed would be (probably less than 2%, lol)?
Anyways, a damn fine read. I wish back then when I was a newbie that I had the opportunity to read and understand this first before venturing in. But when you’re young, you’re young. You basically don’t listen to any logic or reasoning - you just wanna make a 100 hour epic RPG, god damn it!
