Racial Diverstiy In RPG's

Can anyone give me a non-historical reason for why "race" is a more meaningful intrinsic characteristic than height, eye color, nose size, etc?
Some diseases are more prone in certain races, some enzymes are more or less developed (addiction to alcohol is the usual example) and there's been issues with blood types and races with blood transfusions and whatnot.
Race is an obvious outward difference that can have a link to cultural differences. The obvious outward difference can also create cultural differences. People of the same family or tribe can have different weight or size, but cannot be of another race, making it a signifier of difference, and attaching it to cultural differences.
It's like when someone cuts you off in traffic, and you look at the person and you're pissed off and the first thing you curse is their sex/age/race (fucking old Chinese women don't know how to drive!). Maybe not "you", but it's common to look for simple outward differences and blame them for something more complex.
Racial Diverstiy In RPG's
I think most early RPGs are influenced by ideas from medieval Europe, and fantasy inspired from medieval Europe, and therefore traditionally most of the characters have been white, because they for the most part were white in real life. In games if there's ever an "Asian" style place (Dragon Warrior III and Final Fantasy VII come to mind), then usually the characters look more Asian.
It seems what would be better than putting black/brown/darker shade characters into an RPG that is basically a variant of medieval Europe, wouldn't it make more sense to have a game based on a cosmopolitan society with varying cultures and different ideas, or perhaps (as the Egyptian dude did) purely based on another type of culture? It'd be really cool to see a game of with an African basis for it's world. It'd be even more cool to see it imagining if Western influence (positive and negative) never happened upon Africa (perhaps only Arabic influence), mixed with fantasy elements.
I'm curious if the tension in this thread has to do with the majority of people taking issue being American? American culture seems to be race obsessed with it's horrible history between black people and white people. I remember when there was a commercial in the Netherlands or something and an American saw it and then all hell broke loose because from the American perspective it was a huge taboo.

Any preferences on Persona and Growlanser
I'm pretty broke these days, but can probably afford one new game with my next pay cheque, and two of my choices are two new RPGs that just came out over here. Since I think may some people have more experience with these series than I do, maybe someone could offer me an opinion?
Persona and Growlanser were just released for PSP. Anyone play either on PSX or an emulator or something? Any opinions on which is better, what they're about etc.?
If not, all good... just thought I'd check and see.

I just finished FFT: The War of the Lions for PSP.
After I finished, I did what I hate, and looked on the internet what I missed. I think I would've felt motivated to get that one extra character and the Dark Night job class if there were super hard secret bosses in the game, but after Velius everything is just too easy.
Star Ocean 2 is next, but I'm feeling a break from games coming on. Next paycheque has Wii Sports Resort and Dragon Quest IX though, so it probably won't last too long.
