All Hallows' Event 2013

Blame Craze, you guys. He did this to you all.

What are you thinking about right now?

I remember every usertitle I've ever given, Mr. Bieber. It so happens that the phoenix whose tailfeather resides in your usertitle gave another feather... just one other. It is curious that you should be destined for this usertitle when its brother gave you that scar.

I had a dream about kentona

H-h-hey Gourdon I told you that bro to bro, okay! >_>;;

I had a dream about kentona

We all dream of Kentona.

We all dream...

All Hallows' Review Event 2013 - Winners Announced!

Oh man I didn't even realise this was a thing until I saw the announcement just now. Congratulations on the prizes you guys! :D

The only thing we need to wait is the winner of the contest itself. What it taking so long?

Between working for 10 hours a day, getting ready for work/traveling to it for 3, sleeping for 6, and cooking for 1, I have a whole 4 hours of evening to judge/eat/pay attention to needy family, friends, boyfriend/destress. It has been 20 days since the contest ended. Reasonably speaking, excluding the weekends, if I spend 2 hours per game to play through and review, it'd still take me 15 days.. And that's only if I spent all of my evening time doing just that. So it's gonna be a while, unfortunately.

Have you taken a 'selfie' of yourself?

The Final Sin Review

- Welp, for the record I wasn't making fun of your parents, just the wording in your credits. I found it strange that you differentiated between 'thanks' and 'special thanks,' or that parents wouldn't be worth the special kind. But yeah sorry if that offended you, I didn't mean it as an attack, it was just about the wording.

- My reviews might seem sarcastic or oddly worded at times because I tend to write them as I'm playing the game, so they're a stream of consciousness kinda deal. The title is just how most writers would draw attention to an article, it's just a play-on-words like "too many cooks spoil the broth," and your game had too many features and should've been kept simple - that was the idea anyway..

- As for the "chill out" part, this was in response to your bolded and all upper case questions like "WHY?" when I personally found all of my viewpoints very well justified (if this wasn't the case, the review wouldn't have been accepted in the first place).

- When I score things, I tend to go from 0 up to 10 on each individual section apart from theme, which starts at 10 if it totally matches the criteria and I knock points off depending on how much of the game fits in.

- I'm not painting myself a martyr, and I can understand that you didn't enjoy the review and that's fine. It's just the overreactions that I mentioned before which threw me slightly when I had given you calm, well-constructed feedback on your work and you gave unexplained yelling for mine. This review is still work for me, remember, so giving constructive criticism on how I can provide feedback in future is better than getting agitated that I seemingly gave you a low score on purpose.

- The legs and blood thing was because it says his heart gave out, but there's clearly blood by his feet so it doesn't look like it was just a heart attack? I dunno I needed a screenshot, and it was a good way to combine the writing, graphics, atmosphere, etc. into one screenshot. That's just the caption I came up with for it afterwards. *shrug*

But thanks for going into a bit more depth with that post, it was a lot clearer what you were unhappy with. And I'm glad you do take the feedback into account, I hope you put your experience with this contest into other games instead of leaving everything behind and forgetting what you learned.

The Final Sin Review

Firstly, chill out. This is a contest game which you took a month to make, not the sum realisation of your lifelong inspirations. As a judge and someone who took the time to review your game (bear in mind that unfortunately not everyone is going to get one of these), it'd be wise to see the positives of my feedback and not view it as a personal attack - because it's not one, I am just trying to help you developer to developer. This is my opinion.

The monster was the whole point of the game, when people weren't talking about it or fighting against it or escaping it, they were generally aknowledging its presence after it made its debut.

Yeah but the monster and parts where you actually escaped from the monster made up just one scene and a very small amount of gameplay. The rest was searching for items, or listening to conversations which gave no real information and only served to lead the player on without proper resolution.

3/10 on visuals? Wha? WHY?

Did you not read this bit:

Hoo boy, where do I begin graphically.. I'm not sure which of the RMW store packs was used – possibly the Mythos Horror pack? The mapping was pretty spacious and a lot of the areas seemed far too bland. The faces didn't mesh well with the textboxes or menus either in my opinion. I found the menu mostly pointless too, as you had this fat HUD taking up a lot of the field screen in a strange place.. It wasn't really aligned to the corner of the screen, it was quite jarring to look at. And the information on there could also be found on the menu, which made it feel like a redundant screen apart from your save screen, equipment and inventory.]

I will reiterate for you:
- The mapping wasn't great, you could've done so much better with the graphics you had.
- The menus and textboxes weren't very attractive, the faces didn't match up terribly well. I thought the skin was quite futuristic and slimline, whereas your characters' graphics were pretty roughed up and dystopian-modern. Stylistically, they did not suit in my opinion.
-That HUD was so incredibly out of place and took up too much of the screen for no good reason, because your main character didn't even have HP/MP to lose.

Sounds 2/10? HUH? How the heck does this one even make sense?

Did you read my review or did you just look at the final score?

It feels like the game dev found so many nice tracks to use but couldn't pick just one, so decided instead to use every single one. It was a bit jittery, I found it hard to get into the atmosphere when it suddenly jumped around so much. That's not to say each piece didn't fit the situation though, they just never had time to settle before the next one began. Soundwise, I think most of the sounds were RTP apart from a few monster screams.

Your sounds were all over the damned place. I felt no real sense of atmosphere because it was so manic. I didn't get the chance to listen to a single song for enough time to get into its groove because it changed before I even knew it. Especially in a horror/monster game, you are going to want to build atmosphere. Sound is SO VERY IMPORTANT when designing ambiance in a game, and is probably even more important than the visuals. Parts of this game's sound just made me feel nauseous.

I am sorry but it feels like you forced yourself to bring a score this low for some reason and kept finding reasons to score it so low?

Yes I have such a hideous grudge against you - a complete stranger - that I feel the need to score your game lower than anyone else's. It has nothing to do with my opinion of your work, I am solely interested in hurting your feelings. I made all of those things up about your game so that I had an excuse to give you such a bad score.

Forgive me for trying to help you. In future I won't review your games or provide you with any feedback, if that is what you so wish? No one is going to play your games if you continue to respond in this manner to anyone who tries to help you, and not everyone is going to give you a verbal handjob in fear of losing your favour or respect. I have given far more harsh reviews in this contest, and everyone thusfar has accepted it with grace and moved on.

Only you can decide what gets done with this feedback. You have two choices:

1) change nothing, spit in the face of this review and ignore everything I have told you, listen only to those who stroke your ego, watch as your games never improve and you always have the game which you yourself think is perfect even if no one else does.

2) take my advice maturely and take it to heart, realise that no one is saying these things to hurt you or score you badly on purpose, and instead improve your game so that everyone else can share in your vision too.

I also thought making fun of the credits where I thank my parents being completely unnecessary and rude.

Oh, yeah, sorry about that one.
