No, you just get the line on the side of the box itself that I'm assuming in the Japanese version shows you the cut off for characters. After awhile, however, you start to get a sense of when your text boxes are going to flow over.

Wait, this isn't an RM2k3 game... this cave has twists and turns and nice design in general. Where are the completely square hallways of one tile floors?

Even if you can put stuff in it, there's just too large of a main area there. I can't imagine what you'd be able to put in there aside from walls that will help the feeling of being lost in (pink) space.
