Been a while. Here's a taste of what's cooking.
the weird kinda-horz-stretched font bothers me, especially since it doesn't match joser's beautiful lower-res art. this mockup hud also makes the eye travel far too much -- just put the commands next to the hp info. bars would also be appreciated since you don't seem to want to show maximums (although you have plenty of room, even vertically, to shove them in).
"name" column header also seems dumb to me but that's just a personal thing. work on the hud and this'll be great

I own 2k3 but not 2k :/ not worth $24 for me, although I'll sign up anyway and see what events I can do. Surely if it's like "map something in 2k" that's pretty much the exact same as 2k3? It'd just be battles or CMS fuckery (because of 2k picture limitations) that'd be the issue. OOOOOrrrrrrr we could just open it up to 2k3 too......
While we're on the subject of 2k though, everybody should go play The Sword and the Fish. It rivals Helen's Mysterious Castle as the best 2k game ever made.

Roguelike Design: Should I remove leveling?
If you want to balance more easily, fewer levers helps a lot. Focus on making cool gear and you'll probably find it more fun to develop instead of worrying about mixing everything together.
