It *is* better in the sense that it is more fitting with the setting of your game (it looks more ''adult'').
I'd find a way to mess around with the eyes. Spriting eyes isn't all that hard and you could improve further the look of your characters.

It makes me sad that you're using the ugly chibi characters.
Yes, I also agree with this. When I tested your game, the characters really clashed with the mood you were trying to set with the scenario/maps.
I know it's easier said than done but finding some more ''mature'' character sprites would truly be a blessing :).
