Hm, is it not okay to just string together a bunch of levels? (I actually ask this seriously, not hypothetically - it seems worth a try at some point.)
This project will never have much of a story, but it would hardly kill me to come up with a "what is this mission about" screen to show from the hub when you're about to start or load a map.
And yes, you need to get KOs to use magic! =D
Having your own (non-summon) units get KOed in range will also work, it's agnostic, but that's obviously the less preferred solution.

Necropolis: Part I
I saw the exclamation point once before my very first random encounter and never again (only up through Crypt Keeper so far, but I did explore the catacombs thoroughly). Fighting everything got to be wearisome.
If you've just finished a combo, is there any benefit to starting the next one in the stance you comboed into? Seems to me like you might reset all the stances to red "ok" bars after a finisher.

The Screenshot Topic Returns

Nice, simple, effective, easy to navigate, just perfect except for those icons for weapons, they really don't fit the style of panel.
Hadn't really thought about the icons, but you're right.
The Screenshot Topic Returns

Messing around with text drawing and the text background I use. I debated a darker background without the drop shadow, but to me this seems a little better.
(The status menu is actually pasted in from slightly later in this tutorial map; ordinarily nothing really shows there during the message, but I wanted to demonstrate the variety.)
Whatchu Workin' On? Tell us!
Well, I was working on some procedurally generated cloudy and ripply gradients. Unfortunately, once I got some and was happy with how the generation was behaving, I decided they didn't work as well as I'd hoped as backdrops for text, which is what I really wanted to use them for.
So instead I combined a couple of GIMP filters with some noise in probably a twentieth the time the rest took.

Beef up my Java/C/C++ knowledge and experience
Do you have a preference for the sort of project you'd like to do? I mean, this being a gaming site we tend to think of gaming stuff, but maybe you'd rather build a webserver, build a webapp, explore search strategies for the traveling salesman problem, look at AI...?

I downloaded and installed this, but when I tried to run it it gave me an error message:

then a similar one I didn't bother to copy down, then just closed. Any ideas? I'm on Win7, did install the fonts.

Making Mechanics Work For You
The problem with a death-only spell (assuming it actually matters, you can't KO the enemy in 2 hits anyway or something like that) is that if you do make its random payoff good enough to use, it can become an uninteresting degenerate strategy. (Not to mention the perverse incentive it generates in terms of saving and reloading.)
IMO randomness tends to be more effective when things depend on the accumulation of several lower-impact events and not a few important all-or-nothing shots.

Best Engine to Make a Strategy RPG

I also looked at the Aurora Wing information. I'll discuss it with my team, I know some of the members loved Fire Emblem, but I am not as familiar with it.
Another question: Should I be looking to make a small more traditional RPG first to acclimate myself to RPG Maker VX? Or should I be looking to dive straight in with the SRPG scripts?
Remembering the purpose of the thread, I should say it would probably be a huge pain to modify AW into a much different game. RM2K was a bad platform for single-point-of-control.
I don't think it's necessarily useful to make a traditional RPG, per se, but some screwing around with the engine before (or while) diving in probably wouldn't hurt.
