I'm actually a lot more of an asshole online than I am offline. In real life I'm actually very quiet. My philosophy is that if you're never going to have any major connection to the person, there's no reason to care about hurting their feelings, so censoring yourself is pretty much unnecessary. And no offense, but I doubt I'll ever actually know any of you in real life. =]
Yeah... everything that's wrong with the internet is summed up right here. I think you should put the same value on everyone you meet, whether online or off. Why even bother with online communities if you're going to view the people you spend time with as subhuman?
I used to get annoyed with sayings like "Arguing on the Internet is like running in the Special Olympics", or just anything that demeaned the value of online communication and relationships, but honestly, maybe there's some truth to it. If everyone on the internet was intelligent and decent, it wouldn't be much different from offline communication... but since half the people on the internet think of it as shit, treat it as shit, and act like shit, then it's pretty much become shit, and that negative attitude against it gains a lot of credence. I pretty much just stick with the few decent people and places I know these days. The LOL INTERNET 4chan attitude that's invaded most forums just lowers my faith in humanity. Pretty fucking ridiculous that something which is supposed to be a great, revolutionary social tool has been bogged down with such a trashy mindset.
