Yeah, but if GIMP can open .psd's, then I guess it's worth
having... even if it's to open it once a year and say, "Happy Christmas".
There's a plugin for Paint.net that lets you open .psd files, apparently. No idea how well it works, but here it is.
Otherwise, yeah Gimp does. As well as another free art program that I adore called FireAlpaca.

I don't think I have a "dream game." I do have a game that I am more passionate about than all the others, and it's coming along, although it has turned out to be more work than it was initially meant to be.

I think Trihan's tutorials are about as beginner friendly as most Ruby tutorials that I've looked at are, but then again, everyone learns differently.
Maybe a video tutorial series is more your style?

I feel you! When I first started tackling pixel art, it was tough as heck. It's so different from sketching or painting. With enough practice though, I think you'll find that pixel art can actually be really relaxing eventually. Good luck to you!
