Epsiteria: The Holyword
I guess it wouldn't be quite as much a feature as it would be a simple fact.. but I figured it warranted mention either way, since most people seem to use world maps.
Fable of Heroes I: Legendary Edition
I've played a bit of this so far, I've never actually played Dragon Quest or any of its ilk, but games like this I like. The money and experience grind are alright (after all, it was the norm for games back in the day!), I can even do the walk speed because the maps are sized appropriately for it.
The graphics are definitely not all RTP - I'm seeing some edits and even what appear to be custom chips thus far. I'm only level 3 and yet to go into the forest (I ground out the best equipment), but liking this a good deal so far. This has the feeling of Jay's Journey, without the abundant jokes. Music is well-suited to the maps so far, and the graphics are very well used.

Fable of Heroes I: Legendary Edition
Think I will download this and give it a shot when I have time. I kind of feel sorry for those who will or can not play a game due to RTP graphics. It may be RTP but just going by screenshots, it looks well-used.
Legend of Zelda: Origin
Triax: The Rising
Yeah, it's been a good 7-8 years since I unleashed this game onto the public, lol. Thankfully though I did ramp down some of the difficulty, but the notorious six-enemy parties of vampiric flies are still present.

Looking nice, but curious - does the player walk through this map, or is it more of just a condensed view of the world?

I'll add my opinion to the mix here, I actually like that magenta border, it contrasts well with everything else on the screen.
I like your setup here altogether. I agree that the windowed battle is neat, and I think maybe the added darkness of all the black maybe even enhances the atmosphere of battle given this game is about zombie survival.

Not bad of mapping in general, but your protagonists look a bit.. grayed for the environment, I'd say.
Balancing The Money
The only real way to balance money is playtesting - there is some that can be done with number work and estimation but even then it's even more difficult than balancing experience given. The best I've been able to find has been playtesting, making sure I'm at the "intended" level at certain parts, and seeing what kind of spending power I have when the time comes.
Even then, there will be variation, especially if you don't use a fixed ratio of gold to experience given.
i.e. Player has 100 exp - did he kill 50 monsters that gave 2 exp and 3gp, or did he kill 25 monsters that gave 4 exp and 5gp?
