RPG Maker XP - Worth $60?

If you're willing to try your hand at actual scripting, RMXP is definitely worth it.
If you aren't going to buy RMXP, I think you should at least stick to the previous versions rather than pirate it.

Random Musings or Rants

It wasn't any of those, but you're damn right we don't need any of that crap.

Random Musings or Rants

I hate hate hate hatehatehatehateHATE internet "debates".
Yet I find myself inexplicably taking place in them from time to time.
They always piss me off, though, and I spend the rest of the day (and possibly even some of the next days) feeling angry at how stupid other people are.

Video game discussion! Here! Now!

I played a little bit of Lord of the Rings Online last night, since there's a free trial dealy going on. Flabo the Hobbit Burglar has been pretty enjoyable so far. I've only just made it to the Shire, but I really liked the whole intro sequence.
Will I pay for it? Highly unlikely. I haven't even played WoW in probably over a year, and although I am liking LOTRO quite a lot so far, I just don't have the money for a MMORPG right now. Still, if I was looking for a non-WoW MMORPG, this would definitely be it.

Also, I started playing Knytt Stories. I didn't know this game had come out. I really love the whole aesthetic of the game. The minimalist (yet strangely beautiful) graphic style and the ambient music (I'm a huge sucker for ambient music) really draw me in. The upgrades are pretty neat, and I'm looking forward to seeing what other people have done with the game.

Happy Birthday, Michael Jackson!

I had to act like Michael Jackson for a quick group assignment in my speech class today. We were acting like people on a talk show and our group had to be music artists.
My voice was not meant for a Michael impression, but I tried. Everyone got a laugh out of it, but none of the groups could possibly compare to the one after us.

They were acting like they were on Jerry Springer. The guy admitted to the girl that he was cheating on her with her friend. The friend walked in and we found out that the girl was also cheating on him... with her friend.
Then the two girls started pseudo-making-out in front of him. Everyone really got into the act on that one; booing, applauding, being surprised and amused at the appropriate times. It was great.

[GAMEDEV] Following Mewd's example...

I was recently bouncing around an idea for a game that will be a LOOOOONG time coming (i.e. never).

The game was set in a rough analogue of our own world. The initial scenes would be set during the Middle Ages and would revolve around two noble families warring for control of a country. Eventually, one family (Family A) won out, leaving Family B in ruins and exiling them from the country.

As time passed, the surviving Family B was all but forgotten about. By what would be considered our modern era, Family A had unified the world under their banner, and the history books had left Family B not even a footnote after their defeat.

Family B may have vanished into obscurity, but they grew larger. As space travel became more prominent, the heir of Family B began to act out their centuries-long plot for vengeance.

As you can see, it was all sort of vague. I had in my head, though, the ideas that this would be some sort of epic tale of vengeance and that the two heirs of these families would try to outwit each other as things began to escalate into war.

It'd need a lot more work before I could seriously consider it, but I have so many other (comparatively well-formed) game ideas, that it's pretty low on my list anyway.

Here, I'll summarize for it for you:

So, Odin Sphere blah blah Odin Sphere blah Odin Sphere blah blah blah blah Odin Sphere Odin Sphere blah Odin Sphere blah blah blah blah Odin Sphere

:D You know I'm just joking. I have no idea what an Odin Sphere is. Sounds like some sort of magicite.
Well, it won't get any better if no one else posts in it. <_<

My economics teacher was just telling us today that he still used Beta up until recently, when his machines broke.
He likes tapes because it's easier to record stuff.

I'm too lazy to read all the on-topic stuff, so I'll get to that later. I'm very interested in actual discussion relating to game development, but currently unmotivated to read!

My video game topic weeps. ;_;

The music is excellent so far (though I've been told by many the boss tune coming up is the worst ever, though Gredlen swears it is awesome)
I am SO right.

Gredlen's Official Anime and Manga Topic of Fun and General Merriment!

I need to start watching Ouran High School Host Club again... I sort of dropped it halfway (though I downloaded all the episodes). I'm not entirely sure which episode I left off at.

I watched Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai 8 this morning.
Satoko is my least favorite of the girls, so I'm a little disappointed to see her subplot being brought up again this arc. Just a little, though. It was interesting to watch the depths to which Keiichi sunk to kill her uncle the last time, and even more interesting to see the return of batshit-insane Shion this time around. I thought that was over and done with this arc, but I hadn't considered other reasons for her going crazy.

It's always pleasant to see the characters remember what they learned from the previous arcs in some shape or form, so seeing Keiichi stand up to what was essentially a personification of his own hatred was neat. Also, Rena is so cute. I would so take that home and... do stuff.

Dammit, though, Rika. Stop getting so depressed all the time. At least she seemed to be better at the end of the episode. I'm very curious to see what Keiichi has planned. Hopefully it's something big and dramatic! My absolute favorite scene in the original series was his showdown with Rena. I get the feeling that probably won't change because it was totally awesome, but I'd like to see something at least a little bit close to that.

I also watched Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei this morning. Which was an... interesting change of pace. I don't think I could recommend this series to anyone, simply because it's so out there. The show is humorous, but there were only a few instances within the five episodes I've watched that had me laughing out loud. I wasn't a huge fan of the first episode, but since I had the next four, I decided to go ahead and watch one more. It's a good thing I did, because the scene at the end of the second episode was hilarious.

Here's the description from ANN:

Itoshiki Nozomu is the world's most negative person. To his way of thinking, there is no hope or meaning in this existence. Even the three kanji of his name become the two-kanji word zetsubou, "despair", when compressed. What an ironic twist of fate, then, that he becomes teacher to a class containing his precise opposite, the invincibly positive-minded Fuura Kafuka.

If you've watched GTO, you're familiar with the basic setup of the plot. Onizuka, a thoroughly unusual teacher, has a class full of problem students, helps them get over their issues individually, they start to warm up to him, and they mature.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is kind of... half like that. The difference is that the teacher, Itoshiki Nozomu, is suicidal and despairs over everything, from corporate power to courtroom sketches to the harsh internet. Most of his students (the nameless ones) seem perfectly normal. But the unusual ones include a hikkikomori (if you haven't watched or heard of Welcome to the NHK!, they isolate themselves at home and avoid all social contact; a real problem in Japan), a stalker, an obsessive-compulsive perfectionist, an illegal immigrant, and a girl with split-personalities (one the ideal Japanese woman, the other a sue-happy American girl). Among others.

Itoshiki wins his students over not through some heart-warming speeches, but by... letting them know that if they ever feel like committing suicide, he'll do it with them. Somehow, some of these girls twist that into love. Did I mention this show is weird yet?

As I mentioned before, this show is humorous. It isn't funny in the same way that, say, Azumanga Daioh, or Yotsuba&!, or Excel Saga are. It contains a large number of references (largely on the periphery of the action, such as a guy wearing a Lucky Star shirt and numerous quotes on chalkboards), but the bulk of the humor comes from the interactions of the cast. When you have a cast with this kind of range, things are never normal. The show is slow early in the first episode, but the pace picks up soon and things start moving a little more quickly (and erratically).

The animation and art direction are particularly impressive. Words fail me here, however. Check it out for yourself! Or not. Why bother? Everything is so full of despair anyway...
