The only reason to make a CBS is if you just really like the software and pushing it to the limit the same reason someone would make a gameboy homebrew game for the fun of it. Otherwise it just doesn't make sense to me.

It's definitely about making a statement. Someone who has the commitment to design a CBS in something like 2k or 2k3 does attract a particular audience that mostly are 'wow, how did they do that in 2k/2k3?'

Another thing people sometimes overlook is the sprite sizes for 2k and 2k3 games - it's a lot easier for fledgling sprite artists to create good looking smaller sprites for these older engines, as sprite sizes have only gone up with newer engines.

The reason we don't have the best fangame award is because we're trying to discourage people from using rips so much - it's not something that people should be doing anymore.

This facet of RMN is a big reason why I'm here; Because we allow the use of rips. Of course it is more than that, I love the people, the community, the fun events and so forth, but I'll be perfectly honest - I like using rips in my styles of fangames because I really enjoy the nostalgic hit in the feels it provides when those assets are used in creative ways. Nothing pulls you back into a title you enjoyed in the past than assets set up in such a creative fashion that you feel like you're back on that old console again.

But mostly it's because there are a lot of us who just don't have the prowess to use things like the RTP and make it look decent. Those of us that just can't afford to get our hands on custom assets. Hiring even mappers is expensive and they are always busy with their own and other projects. Perhaps even we've got a knack for taking the lore of a game and giving an awesome twist on it as opposed to creating our unique stories.

I hate to say it, but not every dev is as creative where they need to be as a hobby like this requires.
