PROJECT P: ESCAPE FROM CASTLE NUNWI

Final score: 91/100

Interesting concept. But most battles feel like they last too long, or you have to go all out with the FP-heavy things and then it becomes a game of using that thing over and over and replenishing FP to stand a chance. Didn't find much use for the status moves (except Buddha seemed to sleep a lot) and I didn't get a good grip on what the Baffled status did.
It's also extremely dumb and unfair that the "final boss" (first of three) can use a move that wipes out the whole party in one shot. Had to redo the battle three times until he didn't use it. The other two I knocked out on my first try.

There were some typos, I didn't keep track, but Socrates was spelled Socartes once in the beginning. That's forgivable. What isn't forgivable is listing music in any format that isn't Artist - Title. The end credits scroll hit me in my pet peeve weak spot.

Thank you very much for the comprehensive feedback! I'm glad it wasn't utter misery for you to slog through :)

The wrong choice of word after the Tuntar cave has been fixed, but I haven't located the problematic contraction. Guess I'll play the game myself and keep an eye open.

My desired difficulty level is that you shouldn't have to buy the strongest weapons and armor in every new area since they're probably too expensive anyway, but the second strongest will make things adequate.
A few monsters (Devil Kid, Biruburu) have a higher critical hit rate, but most monsters and all party members except Morton have a crit rate of 5%. It doesn't sound like it'd be too much, but I guess RM2k favors those odds.
Yes, blindness should persist after battle to make Eye Drops useful. Status effects in random encounters really wouldn't matter if they all went away after battle, though it makes sense that the sleep status wears off.

More character development is coming up very shortly after where the demo ended. I've been reluctant to write in a lot of party dialog since most NES games had all-mute parties, but it wouldn't be a Breath of Fire without a well-defined cast.

Either here on this blog comment section or on the main page of the game is fine. :)

Oops, that's what I get for not including all the RTP files (of which I use none.) The link is updated, or you can download the dll file separately from http://www.rpgrevolution.com/download/harmony.dll_20.html and put it in the folder with the game.

Release Something Weekend

Since others were advertising their entries, I might as well do the same for mine. This is my thing: http://rpgmaker.net/games/5059/

Dragon Warrior: Legacy of Aiden

Why does this game not show up in the name search in the upper right corner of the page? That's weird.

Picking up where I left off last year when I started playing, I'm at Dalmack grinding for all the best gear. I'm not running into any gold slimes but some metal slimes, and so I'm at level 17. Quite a bit over the recommended level, heh. Still a lot of grinding to go before I'm all geared up.

It really does feel like a DQ game with all the tough and unrewarding battles. As far as emulating the originals go, this game has met its goal. I'm sure it makes it appealing only to very few people, but I might be one of them.

Breath of Fire : Legacy

I realize this is an old game and no one might read what I write here, but I gotta say this; The self-closing door to Nina's room in the hideout will lock you inside the room forever. You can't exit. I had to reload from my previous save.

I was thinking I'd beat the game and write a review since I'm a huge BoF fan, but I don't know if I'll make it. The bad English I can forgive. The pauses in dialog, annoying as they are, I might not hold against it. But mixing 8-bit sprites with the RTP (mutant boss fight) is really ugly. And there are other graphical problems too. The Official soldiers or whatever have a black outline in one frame of the sprite but not all of them. Character portraits are misaligned so that the bottom row of pixels of the portrait in-game is from the top row of pixels from another portrait. And the battle graphics for the mercenaries on the mountain are beyond terrible.

If I can overlook the graphics too... well, I still wouldn't like it as a BoF game. I in no way feel like I'm playing a BoF game when in the second town, with asphalt and chainlink fences and fire hydrants and sewers. And don't say Dragon Quarter, because that game went all out with it and didn't start you off in a generic medieval village.

But if I think of it as a non-BoF RPG and judge it on its own term with its presentation, what then? Well, I'd complain about the lack of direction. Meeting Nina in the bar and everything after that had nothing to do with the goal of meeting master Zen... which I already did, and then he went away and there was nothing to indicate what I should do. Maybe I like overly linear games.

To the games credit, the cutscenes so far have been scripted nicely. I haven't tried fishing yet either, but good effort on even making a minigame.

I guess I accidentally wrote a mini-review here. Oops. All I wanted to say is, don't go into Nina's room after the first time.

First progress report

Update: I can see myself cutting a few corners and leaving out one optional cutscene from the demo, just to avoid mapping the area it'd take place in. You'd never know what you're missing. Other than that, everything else is ready for demo release.

One of my favorite NES games. I have unabashedly used it for all battle backdrops, and some other things. I don't think it's overdone or that many people have played it to begin with.

RM2000: Attack animations and fullscreen/windowed play mode

Updating the graphics driver did nothing. I still get all the slowdown and input lag in windowed mode.

Guess this is another sure sign it's time to get a real computer.
