MERCYNMETAL'S PROFILE

My first RMN game, Dungeon of Monarchs, began as a volunteer project between members of the WIG (Women In Gaming) community back in 2013.

I worked as the producer of the Ethnic Face-sets Art Pack (a Kickstarter campaign for racially diverse game characters). The art pack's worldwide distribution date is January 25, 2016; and it's free for everyone, thanks to the generosity of our backers.

I currently work as a game designer at FunPlus in San Francisco. My favorite games are farming sims, dating sims, dungeon crawlers, and fantasy rpgs... especially games that combine them all, like Rune Factory 4, for example.

Black and Ethnic Face-sets Kickstarter has launched!

Thank you all for the constructive feedback. I did share your concerns with the team.

Our artists really believe in the cause of diversity and are inclusive from everything I've observed, both in their portfolios and when speaking with them personally. They took a price cut to make this Kickstarter's initial funding goal possible, so I know the cause is as important to them as it is to you or me.

If it speeds up the process (rather than wait for another Kickstarter), backers have two options:

There's the option to "vote" on stretch goals, where you can vote for a specific race and character type. This "vote" is available to all backers, at all reward levels. Let us know what groups you want.

There's also the option to contribute a new race at the $100 reward level, if you want to be very specific. This is an exclusive reward, so sharing this face-set with the world is the decision of the backer. There's only two left of those currently.

If this doesn't suffice, then of course another KS is always an option.

"Black and ethnic" races means that the races we want to see in the art pack aren't European white. Blacks are definitely included, and we'd love to see a large selection of other races; the more the merrier. We'll see how far our funding takes us.

Thank you for your support!

Regardless, this is pretty promising so I've backed the project. Good luck!!

I've never made an online transaction in my life. I do want to support this though. Not sure if I'd ever use the face sets but I like the idea of giving people more diverse options for characters.
Seems I have until May 2nd to support it.

Thank you, RedMask! The campaign ends on May 1st, actually. I've been suggesting April 30th to avoid any hiccups with the hour.

Oh, I remember nessy did some dark skinned people too, with Scinaya I think it was? They're in the resource section here. Um, one sec.

This is a cool idea! I think it'd be really neat for people who are just getting into RM but wanna work with more than just the default facesets. Backed! And good luck :D

Thank you for the support, slash! :)

I like to draw my own facesets, so I can't really see much use of these for me, personally. But this is definitely a thing that needs to happen, so...

*backed*

I guess I can use them for references.

Thank you for the support, Red_Nova! :)

As a South Asian, I want to support this, but have no idea what's meant by "Black and Ethnic"? Would I be part of the "Ethnic" group?

Dark-skinned. We would like to expand to other groups, like Polynesian races, for example. It's ultimately decided by the artists, so I'll forward your input to them. Thank you, Yellow Magic.

Update!!!

The Global Release has arrived, folks:

Ethnic Hero Face-sets!

These face-sets are free to use and distribute; please remember to give credit to the corresponding artist in your game. We have dark-skinned characters, aliens, fantasy heroes, both genders, etc.

Esther Chang kindly agreed to donate her artwork from Dungeon of Monarchs (the character Rahz, see my profile pic).

What follows was the old news from way back when...
****

Just wanted to update the RMN community that the Ethnic Face-sets Kickstarter has finally launched! Thank you to everyone who provided feedback during the preview stage. We made a lot of improvements with your help!

For those who haven't heard of this campaign before...

Our team is trying to promote racial and gender diversity by providing game art of black and ethnic heroes and heroines, free-of-charge, to the world, for use in commercial projects. If the campaign is successful, backers get the face-sets a full six months before world distribution, and our artists get paid. We have a wide range of rewards available; so please take a look.

It's our sincere hope this project will help indie developers everywhere! If you believe in our cause, please spread the word! Thank you for your support!

Has anyone made an online service made to inform parents about weather a game is OK for their child a lot

IMDB.com has a Parent's Guide: Content Advisory which would be great to have for games. Basically anyone can contribute "facts" about the media, the rules are stated thus:

"Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that, instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, you use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes."

Then the facts follow. It's quite effective, I think.
