MERCYNMETAL'S PROFILE

My first RMN game, Dungeon of Monarchs, began as a volunteer project between members of the WIG (Women In Gaming) community back in 2013.
I worked as the producer of the Ethnic Face-sets Art Pack (a Kickstarter campaign for racially diverse game characters). The art pack's worldwide distribution date is January 25, 2016; and it's free for everyone, thanks to the generosity of our backers.
I currently work as a game designer at FunPlus in San Francisco. My favorite games are farming sims, dating sims, dungeon crawlers, and fantasy rpgs... especially games that combine them all, like Rune Factory 4, for example.

[Paid - Kickstarter?] Black Characters/Face-sets!

Count me up as an interested artist.
Awesome, Sae! I'm so glad you're available and willing to do this!

Price is negotiable, I understand that the RMN community does not typically... well, generate revenue within the RMN community. Number of sets is also negotiable. I can mimic RTP style if desired.
When it comes to price, would a three-pronged approach do? (i.e., What's your minimum to even get started on a face-set, what's your desired $$$ per face-set, and finally - if the Kickstarter surpasses a goal - you'd earn a % of that.) I'd write a contract with these stipulations. PM for what works for you.
I think mimicking RTP style would be a good first set, since all users already have that art style; and then a customized style would be cool as a second set (if you have time).
I'd suggest at least two characters, one male and one female... ?

This is a very cool idea and I totally support this! If there was a kickstarter, I'd totally throw some cash for it!
I know, right? :) If it's affordable enough, I'd even pay for it myself! Thanks for posting!

I guess the main reason being that JRPGs generally don't have black people. Not the earlier games and such anyways. They have rectified that in more modern gaming, but still. I think it's more of an asian Enterbrain mentality.
Yes, I agree. I've worked for Asian gaming companies, and I can say from personal experience that it's still very difficult to convince them to make dark-skinned characters.
The absolute best, most beautiful examples of black characters I've ever seen were in Christopher Hart's "Manga for the Beginner Shoujo" book, but I can't seem to find them online. I wonder how much Christopher Hart would charge, hahaha...
I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask...

There are some that exist - RMW ReStaff made some Middle Eastern characters, as well as some darker skinned ones. Granted, it would be nice to alternates with dark skin, though.
I think I may have seen those, Liberty - and they were great! (But there were only three of them, if I recall correctly...?)

Update!!!
The Global Release has arrived, folks:
Ethnic Hero Face-sets!
These face-sets are free to use and distribute; please remember to give credit to the corresponding artist in your game. We have dark-skinned characters, aliens, fantasy heroes, both genders, etc.
Esther Chang kindly agreed to donate her artwork from Dungeon of Monarchs (the character Rahz, see my profile pic).
What follows was the old news from way back when...
****
Is anyone else interested in having face-sets for black heroes? Well, I'm a big believer in paying artists for their work. And I'm wondering if we can generate enough interest to start a Kickstarter campaign that will pay artists to create these new resources.
Here's my reasoning.
RPG Maker engines have been around for a long time (since the 90's at least). They make great art. But I don't think they're going to release an ethnic face-set. So there's a void that needs to be filled.
I have been searching for ethnic face-sets for some time. Before anyone claims I'm using the "victim" card, let me assure you that I'm white; not black. But why should that matter???
It shouldn't; but I guess (some) people might not believe a white person would want dark-skinned face-sets. I do! And I know tons of others who would enjoy ethnic heroes/characters. There's a demand for these resources!
Also, we have a lot of talented artists in the RMN community. I applaud those who don't shy away from darker skin tones. However - and I mean this politely - I'm not talking about white characters with dark skin. I'm talking about dark-skinned races - Africans, Indians, Pacific Islanders, etc. And with our large, talented community, it's possible to do!
If you're with me, please post. Before I set up a Kickstarter campaign, I need to know the level of interest within RMN, and more importantly...
Are there any artists willing to make face-sets of black heroes? If you're one of them, please PM me with how many face-sets you're willing to do and what you're charges ($$$) are.
With any luck, we can make some free resources for the whole RMN community to enjoy!

Eden Glosbe - Episode 1
Sad day. I found another bug during the old man in the forest quest. Neither of the brothers could move from this stretch of forest at the bottom, they were just trapped there. Fortunately, my save worked this time :)
Eden Glosbe - Episode 1
The game broke on me:( I couldn't get the Q button to work (i.e., switch characters). The game might've been 30 minutes otherwise, but I only reached 10 minutes. Even my save file won't help... I'll have to start back from the beginning.
Of broken shovels and pickaxes...
Dungeon of Monarchs
(Update 2.7.15: this bug has already been corrected.)
That's an old bug. Go back to the Smithey's; eventually the correct option will work. It happens sometimes at the Enchanter's shop, too. Other times, if you ask for weapons, the tools will show up.
We removed the script that was causing that error. Sorry about that, but the next release will be out soon and it won't have that bug (promise :) Thanks for reporting it.

Hi Linkis,
Thank you for posting. There's an extended alpha build coming soon with the Easter Egg. We're still play-testing and balancing it at the moment. We'll send you an email when it's released.
Also, you should be able to use your old save file in the future game build (barring any major bugs we failed to find). Thank you for playing!
