Off the top of my head:
The last one was the hardest habit to break, especially since I only realized I was doing this about 75% of the way through Alcarys Complex, so there were tons of if statements in the source that were like if(variable = 5) instead of if(variable == 5).
- No semicolon at the end of a statement (this is like Python but unlike C variants)
- Old versions of GM had the "Treat uninitialized variables as 0" checkbox in Global Game Settings that allowed the user to auto-initialize variables to 0, even if they weren't explicitly defined.
- No encapsulation/poor polymorphism. This is unavoidable since GML doesn't have classes
- The assignment operator (=) is not the same thing as the comparison operator (==). GML doesn't differentiate, but if you start programming in C++/C#, for instance, using an assignment operator in an if statement will result in a compiler error.

You can really make it sing if you get good enough, but it takes quite a while to get that good. A lot of the invisible systems that are in place in RPG Maker are completely absent in Game Maker.
GML also sort of enforces some bad programming habits that I had to unlearn when I started pursuing my computer science degree, but the one advantage is that it's dead easy to learn and mess around with. There's a reason Game Maker has a serious reputation as a fast prototyping tool.

Well, if you do a paid upgrade outside of Steam, you'll get a Steam key for the version you upgraded to, so it's all kind of moot.
I don't recommend using GMS within Steam anyway, considering it gets updates late and it (naturally) isn't subject to YYG's licensing structure, which is more favorable than Valve's in that it gives you credit for purchase.

Oh, yeah, here's another thing that KoG just reminded me of.
Once, I was trying to get my license for Game Maker 7 Mac over Christmas/New Year's last year, so I filled out the e-mail thing and it took a week and a half to get to my inbox. The only conclusion I can come up with that makes sense is that the system they use that sends out licensing information is manually managed by the helpdesk for some reason. So, uh, look out for that. :/

I tried 3 different emails. It says it sent me a key but it doesn't. Nothing in spam/trash folders. When I try to use the recover thing it also says it sends an email but doesn't, even when info@yoyogames is added to contacts.
The only emails I get from them are saying my email has already been registered...when obviously I just tried to register it for the first time.
There's been a hiccup somewhere. Contact the helpdesk with the e-mail you used to register (the one that you actually want to use) and they should be able to get it sorted out for you.

God, I was waiting to get my GameMaker skills back on..
I wonder if I could get the Steam version to upgrade if I just use my activation code from the standalone one..
It has been confirmed by Mike Dailly that this offer does not apply to Steam, only to the stand-alone version.

If you have a valid key, it's definitely licensed. Contact the helpdesk and they should be able to help you out. There have been instances where the licensing will revert back to free (I've had this happen to me before).
Edit: I can definitely confirm this works, because I just watched it work on 1.2.1220 on a fresh install. If you're having trouble, the helpdesk should be able to help you out, not only with successful licensing, but with getting your 'None' name changed to whatever you prefer.

Didn't know the free version was outdated. I'll fix the blog post above.

It shouldn't. I say this because I can't actually test this out on my old computer because I still have it authorized for Master Collection, and there's no deauthorization mechanism (authorization just expires server-side after 30 days of non-use). I'll have to try it on one of the campus computers. It's very likely that if you attempt this, it'll detect your Professional version install and open that up instead.
Also, since I can't tell if it actually hands over a license right now, people should remember that if you don't have a license key, you don't own the software. If the program doesn't fork over a key, you'll probably need to get Professional to keep the program if this offer is time-limited in any way. So look at it as the trial Game Maker Studio should have had (instead of a trial that limits you to 19 sprites ._. ).
