Greetings!
I'm Scalytank, a game developer from Hungary. I'm highly skilled procrastinator. I also try and work on some projects in libgdx when I find my inner strength for them :D I also like rpg and tactical games... (I may create one, in the distant future... or not...)

Most rpg maker games use turn based combats, or really primitive action battle systems, because:
1. The developer lacks scripting skills
2. The developer has good scripting skills, but the engine (rpg maker ones), cant run that much of script.
I tried to make a decent action combat in Rpg maker XP. I wanted to make at least an AI capable of pathfinding, and after weeks of optimisation, the result was kind of bad.
So either, you are forced to make a dumb action battle system, (like shooting enemies, who approach you as brainless zombies (the maximum is, a limited pathfinder, some AI (like dringking potions, keep distance, and shoot arrows, and other spells).
I even implemented sneaking, and line of sight... But its not worth. Even the popular abs scripts are kind of.. disappointing. Xas hero has no, or little AI, and blizz abs is just laggy, and empty.
So yeah, this is the reason, for RM games.

I wonder how long it'll be before I become disillusioned with RPG Maker and try to foist my "vision" of indie game development utopia upon RMN and heap disdain on all things RM related
Switch help
Yeah.. self switches are definitely better for this purpose. But then, this is slightly better for learning ^^
ika

This is the latest binary for windows, someone should add a download to ika.
Switch help
I suspect you use Erase Event. Put Control Switches instead erase, this way:
Control Switches (this command should be on the first page of the event commands, in the second coloumn), select a switch, lets say switch 0001, name it Chest1 , or something like that, and leave the bottom part at ON.
Now, click the New Event Page at the top of the screen, and there, at the left side you see Conditions. Check one box with Switch, and select the Chest1 switch.
Make sure, to add the chest graphics to the second page of the event also, so it wont disappear.
This way, the game will remember that you used the chest. Just make sure to use a different switch for different chests and tasks ^^

OpenRPG Maker beta released.
OpenRPG Maker beta released.
This looks pretty good ^^
There will be any chance, that scripting will be implemented?
Also, the engine will use SDL for graphics? And on which resolution? the default 320*240 or higher?
sorry for the question wave :D

Defender of Alefguard, I need game testers and feedback
Actually, a lot of starters are quite happy, when they make a system (or make a downloaded script work)...
Few years ago, I was happy, when I finished my game systems... though i never advertised them.
But I agree with OmegaHunter, about the quality of this, and other games around here...
Everyone is right here... DeathShrimp should also redo this list, when he actually submits his game, because it doesnt make much sense, to advertise these "features".

How did you get started in RM ?
I started to make my first game in RPG maker XP trial version, in 2006. That was some... guy wandering around in school, defeating ogres.. I was more than happy, when i just realized how to use a switch.
But then i moved on to RPG toolkit, then back to rpg maker xp. I learned a lot, to script, that was my goal.
And when i made a very good abs in rpg maker XP, i wasnt satisfied with its performance.
Then i switched to ika, and never looked back...
Thats all :D
