What annoys you in a game?

author=G-Flex link=topic=2479.msg53175#msg53175 date=1230761162
The thing about procedural content generation is that, well, it's like the difference between building an entire city, and theorizing how a city should be built. One is a hell of a lot easier for someone to do sitting his his basement, and one takes a much larger budget and team to execute.
Except of course Dwarf Fortress which proved that you don't need a huge budget nor a big team to exectute it.

I have a hard time imagining how that would really work. The game would have to have a pretty insane development time to be truly open ended.
A great example of how it can almost be done are those old games like Fallout and Arcanum. It's not entirely open-ended but the choices are plenty and the choices have consequence.

Midi's Versus MP3s

author=Max McGee link=topic=2790.msg52978#msg52978 date=1230617703
Kind of like the Martin Scorsese of RM, I am one of the first and one of the few game makers to use non-diegetic pop/rock music ("Real Music") as a score in RM games, which poses unique problems. For this purpose MP3s are indispensable. Fortunately, people's hard-drives are getting bigger and their connections are getting faster so this is hopefully less and less of an issue.
You're not exactly the first. I wouldn't say one of few either. I remember myself using Pet Shop Boys' "Go West" in my very first game ages ago. Most games have used commercial tracks for ages. Even if you don't count using other soundtracks, pop music has had its place in RPGMaker games since waybackwhen.

Of course if you're talking about using exclusively pop music as a soundtrack then you might be one of few.

Personally I don't really mind either midi or MP3. But I don't really like mixing them up too much. The break between bliblops and "proper quality" is so huge. It's a bit like using low-res graphics in a high-res game and then suddenly have a couple of scenes really high-res.

How can you stand having so much shit on your desktop. I wouldn't be able to find a thing.
It's all date-ordered so the new stuff I need is to the right and the stuff I never use but haven't bothered to move anywhere is to the left. Oh and occasionally I move stuff over to the suitable folders. With obscure names like "Starship Trooper 2 DVD rip" (which contains a couple of graphic mockups for games and a flash animation in progress from 2006)...

Everything I download I always download directly to the desktop and move from there. Which means that stuff gets stuck there.

Why do you even need icons on your desktop, Start menu ftw.
My start menu has the unfortunate habit of taking five minutes to load every now and then so it's not my friend.

You people have so empty Desktops. This is my laptop's desktop.

RMNCast Logo

This is an idea.

The idea is to just take the RMN logo from the site and put cast below it in the same (or as similar as possible) font. The font I made from manipulating the RMN looks pretty damn shite (or C and A looks okay, but not the others).

I'm not overly good at this stuff past the concept stage :)

I agree with all the anti-RTP sentiments by the way. I think it's an attitude that sort of needs to change as well. If this page is to go from RMxx.net to rpgmaker.net the games that are released need to be more standalone. Or at the very least every download should clearly state in the link and in an included readme that "this game will not run unless you have xx installed."

It should not be the norm to have a link that says "game here" and then not be able to run that game on some machines because of lack of programs. Basic system requirements should be a reguirement. I can make a comparison to DirectX. Games tend to come bundled with the directx version they require. Even though most people already have directx installed. But for the convenience of all the installer is included. If I go away from commercial games certain games have occasionally strange files they need that some people may have. But it's always warned about and if possible there's always a link to these things or an alternative download for it all.

Essentially my main gripe is that I don't like how everyone on this page assumes the RTP is installed. WHen making something available you should always assume the least. Although I suppose it can be excused when it's only demos. But even then I think it should clearly STATE at least what is required to play a game. A simple (RTP needed to play this game) not after the download link can't be that hard. And you won't alienate a possible casual lurker crowd. Or someone who liked your game and wants to show it to his friends by a direct link but lo and behold that friend can't play the game because the RTP wasn't included and there's one too many hassles to be able to play a game that perhaps didn't look so good after all.

That's my opinion anyway.

I don't mean to sound condescending -- but, erm, RMVX RTP? It works just fine out of the box for me.

(You are saying that this error occurs on start-up, before you even get to the title screen, correct?)
Oh it doesn't have the RTP? Shouldn't it say that somewhere in the download? I mean it was nearly 100MB I thought that it was included in there somewhere. (and at least rm2k always gave a "no RTP found error" so I knew what it was)

I downloaded the lite version and didn't have any problems, so try that until Max appears to fix whatever this is...
Lite didn't work either. I wonder what's wrong. Isn't The Mirror Lied made in the same maker? (The install folders look the same) and it works just fine.

Everything turns gray sounded interesting so I downloaded it but it gives me some strange unspecified error. I get a little black screen then an error sound and nothing more.

'elp!

I almost want to try it.

(Should I have tried the lite version?)
