Play Something! Day II: Second Run [Nov 5th]
author=halibabica link=topic=2157.msg42270#msg42270 date=1226094127I did say it was a neat touch. And one of the few things that relly worked for me in the game. I would have written that it was the best about the game but I noticed above that I already had a best so it became second best. Overall the writing wasn't very exciting but that little semi-subtle touch there worked.author=Shinan link=topic=2157.msg42224#msg42224 date=1226078595I feel I should point out that I did this on purpose. It was meant to illustrate the gap between Tom and the rest of the town. The townspeople don't like Tom much, and don't share his philosophy about beasts. As such, they refer to his lost animal as "it." However, Tom cares a great deal about his beasts, so he refers to them properly. Sorry if that went over your head, but that's the point I was trying to get across.
Then came the second best part of the game. The distinction between it and him. Where everyone else calls the creatures it and the main character calls them him. That was a neat touch.
Play Something! Day II: Second Run [Nov 5th]
I'm not sure I'm able to write up proper reviews for the games I played so I'm going to summarize thoughts here for now. I'm not a fan of reviewing games I haven't finished and I only managed to finish one of the games I played. (The Mirror Lied)
In the order they appear on my notes:
Pirates Legend of somethingsuch
This game is a bit wobbly. The concept is neat but it falls on gameplay. The delay between shots that is because of some thing with only "on shot at a time" is really annoying. Missing a high angled shot leaves you with too much time before you can shoot a second time. I constant timer between shots or something like that would have improved the game greatly.
In fact that was my only real issue with the game. But it was major enough for me. Since I guess it was the only gameplay element in the game. Except for the minigames, which actually were a lot more fun than the main game.
Of course I played on Easy, but still the main game were a lot harder than the minigames. They didn't even out at all. Perhaps they do that on other difficulty levels.
After a bunch of levels the gameplay became increasingly repetitive and finally at level 8 I died twice and prmptly gave up.
The graphics were cute although the cutscenes were way too slow.
Pokemon Hunter 4
I haven't played any previous Pokemon Hunters so I don't know if that helps or doesn't help any.
The best part "Are you sure you want to start a new game?" No I'm not sure I want to start a new game. But the only thing that happened then was I went back to the main screen so I decided to get rid of my indecisiveness and jump right in.
The graphics were shit. I'm sure the RTP can look good but in this case it most certainly did not. It felt... blocky. Well I ran around for a bit trying to find my house, all the houses looked the same but I think I found one eventually.
Then came the second best part of the game. The distinction between it and him. Where everyone else calls the creatures it and the main character calls them him. That was a neat touch.
Then I was thrown into a forest without a whole lot of sense of direction or purpose and I walked around for a while meeting monsters that ran away faster than I did (I always put my battles to auto, because I don't really care for battles) and I walked. And I walked. And I walked. And I noticed I was in a featureless forest without any way of knowing where I was. So I did the ancient labyrinth trick of keeping to one wall at all times. And I walked. And I walked. And I walked.
Then I quit and put the game in the pile of "worst crap ever."
Fenrir
Hmm, my notes say:
Don't worry it wasn't one of the little ones. No. A much bigger one
DON'T WORRY?
I wonder what that means. I think it means some place where a guy was hurt and as a way of comforting the main characters he says something like "don't worry. It wasn't one of the smaller ones that hurt me. It was a big huge one". I'm supposed to feel relieved now? Am I? Really?
This was the actiony type game I believe. It started out rather nice but as the fights got harder all the flaws in the controls became more obvious. Sometimes I walked around and I'd get hit for no apparent reason. There were no shots even near me. The controls were flimsy and bullets disappeared and reappeared and things. And the fact that all checkpoints were before the cutscenes before boss battles. I mean it's nice that the cutscenes were short segments consisting of a message box saying "Help" but the fact that you (I) died over and over again and not because of my own suckiness (though that played part in the first three times I'm sure) but because the controls were unresponsive and outright bad.
One example of bad gameplay and also bad gameplay design is a chase scene where you have to time your movements exactly. One millisecond's mistake and you have to redo it. This means it's nearly impossible to make at the first time (because if you move to the left instead of right even once it's a dead end). It's downright bad game design. Combined with the flaky controls makes it even frustrating to make even when you know exactly which buttons to press.
I stopped at a big bad boss somewhere because I didn't want to play the game anymore.
Shrine of Kammuki
I don't think I can say anything about this game that hasn't already been said. It was pretty hilariously bad for five minutes. And to be honest the friendship/karma system is a good idea. As is the day/night thing. But the implementations are just horrible.
I don't even remember where I quit this. The notes doesn't say the last lines are:
what's the point of options if they don't do nothing.
Then English is worse than mine.
Phanotm Legacy, Reality and Western (1873?) where all unplayable for me since they didn't include the RTP. Monster World I noticed was a minigame collection where I tried out one with the intent of going back and try them again later. But it never happened. I tried rock, paper, scissors and it isn't exactly the most fun of games, but I don't know if the other games are better.
Alright these did get a bit longer than I expected them to when I looked at my short notes. So perhaps I'll submit some of them as reviews.
The Mirror Lied
I really liked this one. But now I have to run so I might (if I remember) edit in comments about that here. My notes say this:
Mirror Lied:
Automatically to windowed doublepluspoints for that
The tiles seem huge
the lights are a nice touch
nice game. Some small hickups but otherwise really enjoyable.

Mirror's Edge demo is out.
author=GreatRedSpirit link=topic=2361.msg41620#msg41620 date=1225736851That wasn't all Activision either. It was partly (mostly) because the developer went bankrupt about a month after the game was released. (So there were no developers left to work on the game and patch it)
My bad, I got publishers mixed up. I think EA has actually been improving recently (well, in a EA-ish way). I was thinking of Activision who published some Vampire Mask game that was buggy to all hell, released a patch or two that still resulted in a buggy to hell game, then dropped it.
EA has been putting out loads of good games. All in combination with highly restrictive DRM and bad ports from the console making them love the console crowd and hating the PC.
Mirror's Edge demo is out.
So where can you find this demo? I'm only finding articles about console demos. Where is the real demo?
OH THAT'S RIGHT. EA HATES PC-GAMERS.

Online Persona vs. Real Life Person
I'm shyer and quieter in real life but that's about the only real difference. I'm less likely to try to join a conversation I'm not really invested in in real life while on IRC I can say random things at random intervals.
The things I do say in real life and here are very similar though. I don't think I've ever said anything on the internet I couldn't say to someone's face.
Of course my persona changes more depending on if I know the people around or not. Even online when joining a new community I do lurk around a lot at first making discreet posts and getting a feel for a place before starting talking. Which is similar to what I do in new social situations in real life. It always takes a while for me to feel at home.
(Also notice how I hardly ever start topics or discussions. That's also part of my persona of never leading, just following. And not making myself too visible)

Languages
My first language is Swedish.
Then I know English fairly well (can write, speak and read good enough). And Finnish somewhat well (can speak moderately well and read well).
"Jonej myky liite."
And then of course I can make informed guesses of the derivative languages. I do sort of regret I never learned the basics of another language than those mandatory in school though. I wouldn't mind knowing basic French or Russian (I can read Cyrillic but I know none of the languages that use it)

All Japanese Rpg Character Art considered Anime?
I'd say that FFVI was a lot more non-anime than FFVII. The FFVI concept art looks like a mix between Franco-Belgian and Japanese comic styles.
All Japanese Rpg Character Art considered Anime?
Not all but probably over 90%. I can't think of one off the top of my head that isn't but I'm sure there are some that aren't anime.
ABORTION: IS IT EVIL???
I'm pro-murder.
(to be honest this is a tired debate that I no longer care about. Of course that means I'm pro-choice because I just don't care what other people do, let them do what they want.)

Hottentot Gallery on Scaffolder's Street
The Hottentott Gallery on Scaffolder's Street is an art gallery on Miner's Street in the city of Veriag. It is commonly called "the hogoss". Currently it is run by Adam Hottentottson who took it over after his father Urban O'Hottentott. The gallery has been in the possession of the Hottentott family for a long time although not since it's creation.
The gallery was originally founded by an artist whose name is long lost and was located on Scaffolder's Street. In a strange turn of events the Hottentotts aquired the gallery and moved it from its previous location. They also changed the name of the gallery to the Hottentott Gallery on Scaffolder's Street. It has been noted by many passer-bys and random people that the name makes no sense since it actually comes from a time after it moved from Scaffolder's Street. Others think it is brilliant irony and suitable for the strangeness that goes on at the gallery.
Hottentott Gallery on Scaffolder's Street is the main financial backer of the newssheet Veriag Chronicles. Something that originally caused a lot of controversy amongst buyers and sellers of art and other high-class members of Veriag Upper Class society. Shortly after the announcement the so called Noble's Shuffle happened which changed the map of the lower aristocrachy in Veriag.
For actual content the gallery specializes in the weird and wonderful. Though the also have more regular works. Their most famous artist is probably Hugo the Horrible who is known for his life-like paintings like Slaughter at the Pine Hills and Phallus' Last Battle.
Currently the inhouse artist is Krigiz Uzanbot who has claimed that he likes to paint pictures of furniture in sensual positions and with his collections have found quite a following in certain circles around Veriag.
