How long should a game take to make?
With all of these contests, you can make a game in 1-3 days. I can make Flash games in 1-3 days too.
However, to really make something good and long lasting that people will love, you need to pour at least 100+ hours into making it. I recently pondered this. I've poured 600+ hours into my game already... so I would need to get 600 people playing it at least 1 hour to be "worth it." Or 300 people playing the game 2 hours :-) Otherwise, its just a wasted part of my life.
Its really UP TO YOU!!! What I'm really striving for is 100 people playing my game 10+ hours.

Tips on Making Good Forests
Craze showed best. The previous poster's screenshots wouldn't be possible for a begginer.
1. Make new map.
2. Use fill tool for tall grass.
3. MAKE A RIVER!!! (I can't stress this enough)
4. draw some un tall grass everywhere.
5. Start with middle tree section from the B tiles and make the outline of your paths.
6. PAINSTAKINGLY then add tops to trees where needed.
7. PAINSTAKINGLY then add bottoms to trees where needed.
8. Make paths where the player will have to walk behind tree tops or behind anything with a top to it.
9. Stay in the tileB section and add random effects. (dirt, rocks, bushes, flowers)
10. Add events like rocks in the water, torches, waterfalls.
11. Add events like birds, deer, bunnies.

It would look more like a shop if I only showed the center and blacked everything else out. Doing the unexpected may show interest. The ceiling tiles don't have edges? I fixed the symmetrical bears. You're really grasping at air here.

Dialogue, Characters, and You.
Like I posted in one of my blogs. You're playing a game, not reading a novel. Playing > reading.
It all dependson what you want with your game. Like Kevin Smith and Quinton movies. 20 minutes of dialog in 1 scene. Sure super nerds like to quote everything word for word, but its a movie. Just like this is a game. Cator to why people are enjoying your medium.
Another thing about dialog is like searching for hidden loot in people's houses. Do you want to check every single chest of drawers or would you rather have something shine and catch your eye like Resident Evil 2?
