Hi I do art mostly but also do games.

Please read my comic, Patchwork and Lace. It's about a Lovecraftian Disney Princess dark mage and her superpowered undead partner hunting monsters and being bad at communication.

The Screenshot Topic Returns

This is a screenshot of a crashed space ship with the dazed engineer trying to figure out what happened, in the middle of a canyon wall in a desert next to a portal.
Yup. Ascii requires some imagination.

Should I change any of the tileset, or does it look like it will work?
Remember, it is supposed to look like a pseudo-ascii style(The brick-walls I made betray this a little, but they work well in my eyes.

Boy does that bring on the nostalgia!

I have a bit of a problem with the difference in line weights- the ASCII stuff is considerably thicker than the patterns, which makes things look a little more disordered. It might be better to have everything a single line weight, keeping in common with the original ASCII game aesthetics.

I don't use random encounters, so I never really noticed this.
Do you know why this is the case, though, Liberty?
There's a bug or something in the script. In another topic recently someone talked about the reason and added a fix for it. I think it was a topic about How to make Random Encounters Welcome? You'll find more info about it there.

It's here, for the lazy people who don't feel like searching.

Any hints tips on making a tileset like this?

You might get more success posting in the Creative Corner about this. I know there's a lot of pixel artists there that may not be reading the screenshot topic.

If you want more realistic trees, you should do some studies of actual trees. Collect a few photos of various sorts of trees, and then try to copy them in pixel form.

I approve of this necromancy.

The problem in cliches and stereotypes is the same thing: lazy thinking/writing. They're the low-hanging fruit of communication, and evidence that the writer hasn't really bothered to examine what s/he's doing.

Something stereotypical or cliche in a narrative isn't necessarily a problem on its own,* but it needs to be there for a solid reason. If you can make it not only make sense, but feel like it's a natural outgrowth of the rest of the narrative, then you're using it responsibly. If you're putting it in because "well, that's how stories like this go," then you're being lazy.

* Other than the problem of "I have already seen this a bajillion times and it is now boring as hell."
