[GAMEDEV] Following Mewd's example...

Did they? The closet thing I could think of was The Fountain... but that was a terrible movie and only 1 of the 3 settings was coherent to the others.

[GAMEDEV] Following Mewd's example...

Here is a copy & paste of a rough draft I had for a game idea the other day. It was partially inspired by the movie The Fountain (which sucked, but was interesting) and by some of the books I have been reading recently, most of which deal with Mesoamerica and pre-columbian contacts with North America. It's not very fleshed out and nothing will ever come out of it, but the idea took me for a second and I jotted it down:

The story revolves around a warrior cursed with immortality. He was born in what would become (central) America thousands of years ago. His family, along with himself, have become ill. When it is apparent that it is no regular sickness that plagues them, he journeys to seek guidance from the mystics. They know of a cure... one that will not only heal him but also grant him immortality. In exchange, he is sent to defeat a great beast that have been plaguing their lands. He suceeds in slaying the great beast and is given the cure upon his return. He has been doublecrossed, however, as their is only enough for him. Though he confronts them, he is ultimately forced to back down. Even an immortal is no match for the sorcery of the mystics. He decides to return home and seek out another cure.

He returns to his home several days later. He makes it home in just enough time to have his only child, a daughter, die in his arms. He then spends the rest of the day in mourning with his wife, who will also be dead by sunset. Filled with painful thoughts of vengeance, he returns to the mystics seeking retribution for the family he had lost. The mystics, expecting his return, are prepared for him and after a brief struggle they manage to banish him to the "ends of the Earth" - which turns out to be Africa nearly 4,000 years ago.

The game would actually be told backwards for the most part. The intro would be displayed as a myth of some sort, only telling of an man struggling against the sorcery of the mystics, and then the game would jump to a more, modern era. You would then follow the immortal's life backwards as he experienced the revolutionary war, the discovery of the Americas, the crusades, the fall of the Roman Empire, the three kingdoms period of China, Biblical events, etc. These would all be told as a snippet of his life during that era - who he was, what he did, who he interacted with, etc. Gamers not familiar with the idea may wonder why the story keeps jumping around to different ages because they would not be explicity connected other than a semblence amongst the leading man, who would be the immortal under different assumed names. Most of the story would revolve around unravelling how he became who he was personally. For example, you witness him losing a large portion of a later family due to the Bubonic plague. Instead of remorse, he remains stoic; his heart was already broken over three millenia previous when he lost his first family.

When the story reaches the beginning the player would learn it full detail of how he became immortal and how all the scenarios were linked. After this, the story would cut to him having a homecoming of sorts - finally discovering the location of his homeland in the modern era and tracking down the mystics (who are apparently immortal as well and don't travel much) to complete his revenge, a revenge he had been plotting through history. In the end they all perish, though the immortal reaches where his original family was buried millenia ago.

Like I said, nothing will ever come of it and the story is probably best suited for other forms of media.

Hellion [it's like Diablo and DQ had a baby!]

Wow, I must say your game is very impressive! :) I really like the style you've gone with, the retro works verywell. Also, your class system is very intriguing, with a good number of classes to choose from rather than the standard Warrior, Thief, Mage choices found elsewhere.

The OOBS system you're using is really cool, as well. It's a nice change of pace to have something to do out of combat.

One concern I have so far though, is that I've started a few of the caster classes (being a fan of magic-users) but each time I enter the Pit, I seem to die within the second or third encounter. I don't know if I'm missing something, or going into the wrong room first, but the enemies seem to hit really hard, without any healing items to use.

I'm going to start another new game as a Kensai probably, to see if I have an easier time with a physical class.

I like the nod to Harry Potter you've used. ;) Being a Potter fan myself, it's a nice touch that really gives me an idea of what the character might be like.

I didn't bother to read your post, but hopefully you derived your name from Ashley Riot of Vagrant Story. If so, you rock.

[MOVIE] Ratatouille

I guess I really didn't have an interest in a lot of Disney movies from like 1995 so I know not of what you speak. I never paid attention to the new songs in Aladdin.

Old Aladdin songs = awesome.

MOVED: Some art for fun.

[MOVIE] Ratatouille

Disney movie songs rocked the cabash.

RPGS... you've beaten

Knights of the Old Republic was pure ownage and maybe even the best RPG out of the last console generation. Come and get me, flamers!

It's my opinion that people should make their game for whatever reason they want. But don't expect a huge audience if your game is not made for a huge audience.

Oh, I agree. The problem here is Brick wanted everyone to love his game. RPG-Advocate is met with a collective yawn but he also made his game with a relatively small niche in line.

I would've found it then, since they didn't delete any topics. But, yeah, I remember reading his rant about it. I'm not going to go on a tirade about it, since this is neither the time nor place to do so. Topic hijackers are such fun people. :)

I didn't mean to hijack the topic! Honestyly! It just evolved that way!

You can read the canceled update from http://www.kineticcipher.com. I may have gotten Township wrong (maybe it was whatever terrible sites that merged into Township, I dunno), but Brick admits to whoring out his game everywhere in search of a response. When he got none, it largely doomed his project.

Nah, it's not a potshot. You intentionally gave your game a retro look and it gave it a sense of style. Brickroad just neglected the graphical aspects of his game and ended up looking like it was a retro game.

Note: The term retro is relative.

PS. I guess he was talking about Hellion, which is fine because it even displays my point better. :D
