I'm not criticizer your game for not having side quests. The way I see it is that I think it's pointless to have a quest book if you are only focusing the game on the story which isn't quest relative. It's just carrying on the story not carrying on random quests given in different areas of the game. That's the point I'm trying to make. However having a quest book means you always know what you have to do which is also a benefit too.
You basically answered your own question/critique :) Personally I like having quest books (especially if they contain previous quests/steps too)
