Guess the Game!!!

That's gotta be Tetris on the Gameboy.

Now, one of the best games of all time:

MMO

Yes, people have thought of it and are working on it.

I'm building my own editing tool, distributed server system, and game engine in and of its own.

To make something that would run efficiently, you'd really need a programmer to build every aspect of the game. The servers would have to be optimized and ideally work on Linux and with some kind of database system, ideally, Oracle, from what I've heard from friends who actually work for MMO's.

And someone was pointing out the other day that I should be building a messaging queue, which makes everything I did with all my threads, processes, multiplexing, and forks to this point utterly pointless -- a message queue would be way more ideal.

But yeah. You have to know a LOT in order to build it. Graphics, networking, OS-related coding, compilation, security, resource-building...

To kill or not to kill..

I would kill only if I had to. In principle, I try not to kill bugs, animals, etc, if I can help it.

I've been in situations where people have attempted to mug me. One had a gun, but thankfully didn't get a chance to pull it out. There are plenty of times when the opportunity could have been "justified" to kill someone. But I knew that I wouldn't have to see the people again. Instead, it was more simple to break a limb or knock them out so that they wouldn't be able to continue with whatever plan they had.

Being violent and severely injuring someone? Yeah, I'll do that if I'm being attacked. But I'd honestly rather ruin someone's weapon in a war, rather than killing them. Or wounding their arm/hand so they couldn't fight anymore.

But I imagine there is a threshold of some payment that would convince me that someone needed to be killed. But I think it would also rely on something that makes me feel like it's what should happen -- that it is acceptable. Perhaps something like taking out a crime syndicate for $10,000,000 because I could somehow sneak in or be in the right place at the right time, and it would stop a lot of people from being hurt, etc. I don't think I'd be able to take someone innocent's life, though.

I dunno.

What consoles do you own?

NES
Genesis
SNES
Virtual Boy
N64
Gamegear
Xbox
PS1
PS2
PS3
Wii
Lite-Brite

Xbox has other consoles I wanted on it (via emu and space-saving): Atari, Genesis, GBA, GB/C, NES, SNES, N64, Gamegear I think, (no Virtual Boy)

I only have my Xbox, PS3, and Wii out, since it gets me basically all systems I want, minus the current portables in the market and the 360.

The Next Maker?

I think something similar to RPGMaker 2K3, but keeping features from XP/VX. It'd be nice if the coding language was scripted or it would convert your point/click scripts in 2K3 to a native codebase. Then if you understood it, making lots of replications/changes wouldn't be so difficult.

RM2K3 is a pretty solid engine. If they could extend it to have OGG support, more colors, bigger screen, and different sized characters, that in itself would make it a better engine off the bat. It'd also be nice to have access to the battle system code and menu. In addition, more support for keys/mouse, and a bigger screen. Ship it with a few default scripts for battle, menu, etc.

I don't like RMVX or XP because I don't like scripting things out. I know how to code (I actually even took a course on Ruby/Rails in college, so I do know Ruby), but when you have to start really "coding" something and understanding the codebase, that's when your hobby becomes more than just a hobby and starts feeling like work.

Just my five cents.

Missing some file I guess

Another problem is that a lot of different "versions" of RM2K3 have different filenames. I've seen a few that referenced something like "vehicle_1.png" and another want "Vehicle1.png."

But yeah, the author should definitely include the RTP with his game. Does anyone still have a copy of the "RTP Dependency Scanner" ?

What comes to mind from the username above you?

Something like an epitaph, for some bizarre reason...

Screenshot Thread With One Eyebrow and a Golden Tooth

Good call, iamnot. I didn't even think about the direction of the monsters. I'll have to definitely fix that! And as far as the backgrounds... Yeah, he is pretty tall. I just need to find a decent and consistent set of backgrounds. I'll have to check out Charas later on!

What comes to mind from the username above you?

A tiny, fat Asian guy with buck teeth.

Music...makes the people..

It honestly depends on the quality of the game and song. I don't think that I'd ever play a game with headphones on if I could help it. I have decent speakers on my laptop, or if I really feel like it, I can hook my laptop up to my TV through HDMI and play on the big screen.

As far as music quality -- I don't mind listening to MIDIs. MIDIs are almost a thing of the past it feels like, these days. But I totally can dig listening to some MIDIs. If your game is of incredible quality -- something that's shooting for the PSP or something that has lots of custom resources and systems -- I would definitely imagine that MP3s are more important, or OGG at least. Something of better quality.

But I think that something on RPG Maker 2000/2003 that's pretty much default everything, would be most enjoyable with MIDIs. Just my few cents on it.
