The end of cheap oil. How will you adapt?

I'm actually working at a major oil company right now as a client right now. From what I can tell (I'm actually working on watching production and the like) there is almost no difference between now and 6 years ago between accumulation and production. It seems more and more like OPEC (I believe this is the governing body) is basically doing a supply/demand thing on oil and saying "More demand, we'll charge you more."

There are a lot of cool new techniques to harvest oil too -- I imagine that we'll be able to eventually get plenty of oil cheap again -- just gotta give time for the markets to cool and the like. A coworker of mine was saying that in Venezuela, they have like 200 years worth of oil for current consumption around the world -- just in Venezuela. Add in America's self-sufficient well in the northern set of the states that could fuel America for like 50 years without other... The world is definitely alright for oil consumption.

However, I do agree that we need to find better, alternate methods of fuel. Something renewable. For now, though, it'd be REALLY NICE to have cheap gas again... Thankfully, traveling to said oil company is a big distance compared to my normal office, so I get to invoice ~30 miles per day at $0.50 compensation per mile... I more or less pay my gas off (and lunches) for an entire week via that.

Telemarketers

I usually just take them on a run for their money. It's kind of dick-hole-ish, but here's my typical dialogue:

Telemarketer: Hi Mr. Joo (because nobody can pronounce my last name right...)
Me: Hello, who is this?
Telemarketer: I'm with the <such and such company> and do I have a deal for you!
Me: Oh, is that right? Tell me about it!
Telemarketer: It's got these great things like <insert great detail>.
Me: Wow! Really? That sounds very useful!
Telemarketer: Yes, and you wouldn't believe the quality of the <insert other detail>.
Me: You're really swaying me to get <insert product/service>.
Telemarketer: Yeah! You bet, did you know that it also... <insert other thing it does>
Me: No way! Then, it'd be great for other people too! My friends are getting married soon... it might make a great wedding gift, huh?
Telemarketer: You bet! And you wouldn't believe that... <insert other dialogue>

<now, let them talk and continue to give my support for another 2-20 minutes, depending on my mood>

Me: Naw, I'm kidding. Not interested. *click*

MMO

It's a nice idea -- but if you really want to offer them something, then you might as well be giving them PlayerWorlds or Eclipse. Those are honestly, probably the next best thing compared to MUDs. Maybe they could use animation or something else, if they don't have it already... But various feature enhancements would rock. Sometimes I consider doing some -- but then I remember it's built in VB and want to vomit and run away.

I suggest learning coding to begin with and maybe looking at C#. It's free and pretty extensible. If you learn something like SDL, you could presumably make something that runs fairly efficiently.

Just my thought on it, though.

High Power=Low Tier?

And people wonder what make the classics so damn good -- there was so much more thought in strategy with characters. Now they're just overpowered monsters.

But yeah, definitely probably the best thing to keep in mind!

High Power=Low Tier?

Then make mages have lots of MP and Defense and Int. Make it so they suck for combat, but they can cast spells that are extremely powerful -- but if they don't conserve it by the end of the dungeon, they'll be utterly useless. That's kind of how it was for FF1. You had to conserve magic. I think just the proportion of the stats are more important or the amount that they influence attacks.

High Power=Low Tier?

Suggestion to combat it...?

Make magic useful. Magic should be incredibly powerful and very difficult and seldom cast. Magic should basically be compared to a limit break, in my opinion (for attack spells). It's a VERY powerful attack that can sometimes let you win the battle, but it shouldn't be used except for the last possible second, when you start nailing the boss with it.

Aside from that, healing is important to have and should be somewhat cheap in comparison to attacks. Buffs should also be somewhat cheap, but not nearly as cheap as healing.

If you really want to mix it up, you could just make things work off of a Stamina system like Chrono Cross or Xenogears. Then, just make a spell something you have to save AP up for several rounds for. i.e. 7 points (say you recover 7 in a turn) is used for a "strong" attack; perhaps a strong spell is 21 points. A buff is worth 6 points, and healing (minor) is worth maybe 3 points. Full healing/restoration is worth 14, perhaps.

Also, I would almost ALWAYS make a Tank also a buffer or a healer. Perfect example: Rand from Breath of Fire 2. I used him as a healer and he had a huge amount of HP and Defense, so he was able to last. I think a tank on its own doesn't work for a console RPG -- they really need to have some method of support -- think how awesome Garr would be (or could be if you used Skill Ink) to make him be capable of buffing your heroes. On my BoF3 save, just testing it, I put him under Emitai master for a while to pump up his AP and gave him some skills for buffing. He was INCREDIBLY useful. Sure, he was slow, but when he's taking all the hits and he can handle it, it's nice to give Ryu and Rei some extra attack via War Shout. So in that archetype, I think 3 stats should be above average, and one should be severely penalized -- Garr had Int, Off, Def, but bad Agi. It worked for him.

Aside from that, perhaps the Tank could be given some other useful ability or in-game benefit? Garr can push blocks (for the three that existed in the game, lol), but maybe if there were more for sidequests, it'd be worth it, ala Ox from BoF1. Even then, I think he had some Defense and Offense buffs, didn't he?

Final Fantasy IV (DS)

Isn't FF4 a much bigger game than Crisis Core? I never played Crisis Core, so I wouldn't know.

Also, I think the DS graphics are also really... suitable for it. I think they fit really nice -- they look nicer than FF7, but not too serious like the recent FF's. It kind of fits the entire style/fantasy, I guess?

Also, WIP, yeah, that's why I liked Cecil's voice. He does sound pretty... passive/quiet/wimpy. It's nice to hear a character that has some thread of conscience/Humanity, compared to the people we have who are supposed to be freaking warriors/paladins in other series who are just "kill kill kill grrrr bash"

I dunno. I need to buy a DS soon. The question is... which color? I saw Black, Blue, and White at Target the other day...

MMO

I once had an idea for an MMO cross my mind. But then, I realized I can't make it and the only reason I wanted to was because I want to see one of the kind. That is, a Viking MMO based on Norse mythology. (This doesn't exist, does it?)

It's called Age of Conan. Look it up sometime.

MMO

I don't think it's a matter of computer power -- I think it's a matter of Human power and the right universe. If there were enough dedicated GM's always participating, we'd have a truly unique RP experience.

One of the things I liked about MUDs were that it was common to find more immortals than players. So big RP events could constantly go on.

What needs to happen is have a cached set of data that can be updated constantly and records of when the user was last there. It'd be very cool to have a lot of stuff dynamically generated and as time passes, the universe/world expands. It'd be cool if villages could start being built, villages burnt down, and so forth. For that, I suppose there may be a need for more processing power...

But in the end, if there was server-side content that was distributed in real time as players access the areas, with constantly working GM's (and many of them), we'd have a real winner.

Final Fantasy IV (DS)

I think we'll just have to deal with the name differences in pronunciation, although it totally throws me off as well.

I like Cecil's voice a lot -- he has that stereotypical good guy voice -- enough that you can tell he has that soft heart under all that evil dark knight armor.

And Kain... wow. That was just... terrible. I really hope that it sounds better in the game and that scene just was poorly selected...
