I've seen so much wide-spread condescension and undeservedly nasty attitudes from high-profile members of this website that I am a little surprised at the contention as to what ostracized this community from others.

Maybe it's the fact that everybody is a total fucking dick to each other. :|

Small Details (Looking for ideas)

Personally, none of the features you listed inherently make a better game. MP3s rather than MIDI, for example, drastically increases the filesize of your game. What if players don't like the MP3s you have chosen, or you have poorly matched them to scenes and areas? What if the cutesy MIDI sounds, if well-chosen, evoke a sense of nostalgia in the player that is viewed as a positive emotional reaction?

Abundant treasure chests. This is almost bordering on the inherently BAD. I refer you to reading the excellent article Risk and Reward by Sam as well as any other game design articles you can get your hands on.

One of these articles (I forgot which) goes EXTENSIVELY into the "full heal after battle" mechanic, and how this can totally devalue or unbalance your combat system unless pulled off with finesse.

Your art is awesome! As a tip, try elongating the *torso* on someone who is supposed to be tall. If you make their torso longer, you will draw the arms and legs longer proportionately as you follow the visual line (ideally).

Basic Jumping

Well, you should at least expand a little bit! Perhaps a better title is "Jumping Animation," because this does not introduce an actual "jumping" mechanic into someone's game. Even a suggestion of how to do this, mentioning the Phasing Mode option etc, would give someone an incentive to look at how this can be included as a point of interest - or segue it into Advanced Jumping. :)

"I made a decision to do that/I did that on purpose" is not a valid response to an obviously disliked gameplay feature/quirk (or bug, as the case may be); that's simply dodging responsibility for poor design. It makes you look defensive and unable to take criticism - especially when the very first comment on a very comprehensive, well-written review of your game is basically to accuse the author of exaggerating everything and being completely wrong.

I'd test more, but I really dislike 2k3 and nobody should use it anyway.


I find it really baffling as to why you would write a tutorial for a game engine you clearly dislike and then mention repeatedly how nobody should be using it because it sucks. Although, in other comment threads, I've seen you have a very unnecessarily nasty and immature attitude in regards to constantly putting down the engine/s you don't use.

This is really counter-intuitive to reading an article that should be helpful, because here you are, looking for information, and the information keeps insulting you.

Basic Jumping

All this does is allow your character to be animated like they're jumping. It doesn't add any kind of depth to a game because it doesn't explore any of the actual mechanics of how jumping should be used.
