Using rpg vx

author=wellsy50
I need a cooking option in my game.

An ideas would be great!

cheers.

Ideas for what? How to do a script for this in VX or whatever? You should put up more specific details about what you want cooking to accomplish as a feature. Is it an interactive minigame where you monitor the heat of the fire and how often you stir? Does it feature prominently, with lots of recipes to discover? Is it just a 'crafting menu' that makes restoratives? Etc.

How many is too many?

Right, that's exactly what I am talking about. When you go up against enemies who can only be Ignited, you only have one choice of which ally to use. I'm not sure why it's interesting to switch party members around if it's always the same party member being applied to the same situation every time...

How many is too many?

McBick: Consider not using perfect 'elemental pairings' (Fire element dude can be weak to Wind instead of Water) to make the decision process behind choosing an ally more interesting. Otherwise I'll always use the pokemon ally who has the elemental advantage, every single time. Another form of averting this is giving the Fire dude who is weak to Water some attacks that do special things to Water enemies, such that you might actually want to think about taking a gamble and leaving him in.

But you have to admit, you don't have do any of that with any of the other RPG makers. I mean there are patches and whatnot, but it is usually for extra features, not fixing the engine itself.

I do totally admit that! And I'm sorry if that seemed a harsh reply. I'm aware you aren't experienced with the engine, so you wouldn't be taking any stand against it. It wasn't directed at you so much as memories of people who have made these complaints while simultaneously refusing to bother with the fixes, or not really knowing about the problem. Why would you throw a piece of ripped paper away instead of just picking up the tape? XD It makes no sense to me!

And you have to admit... the core script fix is easy, and the extra app for swapping tiles doesn't just make up for what the engine lacks; it gives it even more than the other engines have. Turning a ripped piece of paper into a piece of gift-wrapping paper is probably worth a little extra effort. ;)

EDIT: Rather than double posting:

Back on topic, there are definitely some Resource threads around. You should browse those and see what you can find, and if you like the look of the resources you find, you should use the engine that they're fit for. That is, if graphics is your concern!

It is easy to use/learn/looks nice without having to change the entire program(which seems a common thing with VX)

You haven't ... used VX, have you?

The issues you're referring to are likely the well-known engine issues that were caused by translating it to english, such as PEMDAS not being properly followed when doing math. Those are solved by the horrific ordeal of 'changing the entire program' by... copying and pasting something into the script editor. There's a huge amount of WARGARBL over 'HOW DARE I HAVE TO FIX AN ENGINE THAT SHOULD WORK FOR ME!' ... but the fixes are a two-second copy/pasta that are already aggregated for you (YEM, for example, includes a single Core Fixes script that you can use with almost anything else). The tileset fix can be considered annoying as it involves downloading a very small (6mb?) separate app ... that then makes the engine incredibly powerful for tile-swapping, passability-swapping, and event-tile-swapping; moreso than what is available in 2k3 at the very least. Can't speak to XP as I don't know about their tiles, but I am pretty sure that some of the SwapXT functionalities aren't included in XP by default.

There is an article on the site about "XP or VX?" that really outlines the drawbacks et al. As a note, there are some drawbacks listed there/cited by other users that really don't apply or can be mitigated by your knowledge of resources. (For example, VX's engine gives you a very limited tileset, but there is an EXTREMELY powerful tool called SwapXT that completely circumvents this drawback and then some. There's also complaints that the RTP is too boxy as it lacks diagonal tiles, but I guess we're pretending that graphical editing is impossible/everybody is restricted to RTP-only. I guess in essence, VX's major flaws are often attributed to its tiles.)

XP probably has more resources simply by virtue of having existed longer, but it's also relatively easy to convert XP resources to VX ones (hey there's a tutorial about the charsets up right now!). If you feel like doing a minimum of graphical work, go with XP.

edit: whyyyyy can't I find the XP vs. VX article

edit edit: looks like I am retarded about available resources oops go with VX.

I also dislike the overlay - 'streaks of light' is just not a great look... but, I do commend you on combining a wide variety of vegetation in a very sensible manner! I have a huge pet peeve with the games that use every single color of flower and every type of tree on one map without doing it right. You've struck a lovely balance - none of those flowers clashes horribly with each other, you used the same types of trees but in different SIZES (clever!), AND IS THAT A MUSHROOM I SEE GROWING AWAY FROM FLOWERS AND IN A SHADY SPOT LIKE A MUSHROOM SHOULD BE GROWING?!?!?!?!?

I just died and went to forest-mapping heaven.

p.s. the shadow on your tree just-left-of-center at the very top of the map looks really weird being cast onto the water like that.

edit: oshit necropost I guess

:0 super awesome! I noticed that one of the sprites is isometric, will you be able to have omnidirectional movement in this game? :0

The corners aren't the same color as the other sides, it may be more visible on my monitor than yours, though xD

The sides/corners issue has been fixed; good catch because that is damn near invisible on my screen - and yes, 8-dir movement. I want you to be able to maneuver around enemies chasing you on the map! The biggest limitation with any ABS or AES in previous engines was, IMO, 4-directional movement; at the very least, more movement directions ease the pain of running through diagonal hallways. XD

Crest Shop Revealed

but as it turns out, the berries are the avian equivalent of you and I taking six shots of tequila and the bird flies into a tree, knocking the crest loose.

Search EVERYTHING.

hahahahahahahaha

I will be collecting crests like a mofo. My first thought was that this is a nice way of handling bonus progressions, because you might not discover crests in the same order in every playthrough (and thus unlock crests in a different order each time). Although the problem with viewing this as an advantage is twofold, personally:

a) Once I know where all/lots of crests are, I will always be grabbing those ones when I get to them, as soon as I get to them;

b) There is no real choice of one crest over the other. I always get every single crest I qualify for without having to make a decision.

Of course, A is a problem with pretty much any pattern in any game, and B can be considered a nice concession to the player since they ARE, by definition, bonuses. Just throwing up strawman arguments to further the thought process :B

are you going to be using Disgaea's sprites? Or are you going to get custom sprites for it someday?

If custom sprites magically happen, I am all over it. Fully custom anything is on the "Dream List." As it stands, the extent of my abilities are some reasonably good Disgaea edits. Rylan there is a sprite that is normally totally shirtless, and Aisling is... well, look at her; you can tell who she's based on, but I've been told it's a good enough edit that you probably wouldn't realize until I pointed it out/made you think about it. (Although I admit to having done very little editing to the good Proctor there, since I haven't decided what uniform all the Proctors will wear.)

Just be glad I have enough taste not to throw around sprites of Laharl or something :B
