Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer Review

A few things I would like to mention:

I don't think anywhere here condones rape and torture. They are things that I'm sure all would agree we would prefer wouldn't actually exist. It does take some courage to aboard such themes, which I believe calunio has tried to do. This type of game could have never been approved for a legal, commercial release. Thankfully (regardless of whether you agree or not with the premise and content involved), indie communities like RMN have a space for it.

The game does include a rarely seen disclaimer that's intended for "Mature Audiences Only" (which should be included more often, IMO). Presumably whoever considered downloading it at the minimum saw that the game involved torture, which should hinted those who have a very strong ideological stance about exposing themselves or their families to that to avoid it altogether. I have no idea whether Solitayre would have even considered playing it had he not been a Game Gale judge.

Finally, there is the issue of whether games should be fun. Fun is a very strong word that I have tried to avoid using in my time at RMN. Why? Because this is definitely the most subjective thing related to playing games. Also, it is flawed to value games only on the basis of fun. Why? Because not all gameplayers choose to play a game necessarily looking for it. Ever heard of wasting time or looking for a challenge?

Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer Review

I don't agree with almost any aspect of your review, but I still respect your opinion, especially since you made some good arguments to support it. The one thing I know for sure that we had in common was noting that the Dungeoneers' website bore a certain similarity to something we all know. I suspect this game will be one of those which people either love or hate. Whether it erupts into a flame war (I am hoping it doesn't), we'll find out soon enough.

EDIT: Here we go!

Where do you live, Solitayre? I haven't heard of anyone traveling by train for, like, ever.

Amtrak really only works well if you live somewhere somewhere between Washington, DC and Boston. I once took the train between Philadelphia and Chicago. The only thing that's kind of stupid (although I don't know if it's true anymore) is that in New Haven, CT the change the engine from electric to diesel, which delays the trip for 30 min. The Acela Express is not much quicker than the normal trains, but at least now it has complementary wi-fi.

Why you would ask? It was a lot cheaper than Fel is probably paying to fly to Orlando. Took me 18 hours to get to Chicago, but on the return trip there was this 24 inch snowstorm. The return trip ended taking a whole day. They had the decency of giving us a voucher for food. A sister of mine who had fly into Chicago had to wait to extra days just to fly out.

Finally, taking the train is way more comfortable than being in a cramped plane or bus seat. At least in the plane, the trip will generally be quick. I took that same trip to Chicago using Greyhound and it was horrible! I had to get out of the bus to change buses in Pittsburgh and Cleveland in the middle of the night, so I couldn't get food. Not to mention that going to the bathroom in a bus is pretty bad. Plus the bus stations are so yucky. I actually found there are people who refuse to fly (even though in terms of passengers-miles it is still one of the safer ways to travel) who depend a lot on Greyhound to go from one place to another.

Yeah amtrak is pretty much the shit. Mitsu's probably thinking of, like, steam engines or something. I wish Amtrak used steam engines.

Steam engines are for romantics. They probably would use coal, the most polluting energy source of them all (that's what they use in China, a lot). The US is way behind in passenger train technology compared to say, Japan and France, and will never catchup.

Excellent game, I really enjoyed it. Haven't finished it though, will keep playing.
I wrote about my experience on IndieReview, if you're interested, you can take a look:

Cheers and keep up the great work!

Great review! I think you got what the game was intended to be. You probably want to finish the game to see if you'll want to add to it. And definitely, as calunio said, you should post it here in RMN.

SRADIO #2: Super RMN Bros. and Game Gale

Yeah, just finished. I guess Babby was pretty involved this time.

The ending was a nice surprise for me. Who said you didn't have some non-developer talent! :-)

Also, I am still looking forward to hearing what geodude sounds like!

At least you're not normal.

Being called normal am I not worried about. When people can you weird, abnormal, etc. that's probably when I would worry. Probably because I would have to take into consideration from whom it's coming from.

What is normal is a social construct. What is normal somewhere or among a certain group might not be the case elsewhere.

Go to Atlanta instead. I'm going to be there (again) on June 8th and 9th.

Maybe you'll get inspiration for another XP-VX music video. :-D
