A way to differentiate reviews whether it's for the demo or the full game?
post=135344
Previews at least in the arena of commerical games tend to withold judgment and be value-neutral.
The other name that comes to mind for that is what PC Mag uses which is "First Look". When do they do a "Preview" it is even more limited, usually to features.

Reviews should really have a limit.
Yes, there is a minimum of two paragraphs, 4 to 5 lines each, supposedly. Buf if you read the review submission page, it says a minimum of 300 characters.
A way to differentiate reviews whether it's for the demo or the full game?
I agree that there must be a way to differentiate them. In the meantime, whenever I write another one, I will make sure to mention the status of the game somewhere within the review. Also, there is the issue of the game that have several demos (significantly different, not fixes) released over time or even the ones released in chapters and episodes that don't necessarily have a gamepage for each.
In theory, this would work, but what happens if a demo is taken down? Puff, the associated review probably would no longer be linked.
I believe kentona has a good idea here. Games that don't have any downloads shouldn't get either. If a demo is submitted, a Critique tab would appear if no demo was there before. Finally if a game gets canceled or completed, a Review tab. The only question that would remain is if a game that had a Demo that was critiqued and becomes cancelled or completed, whether those critiques should stay remain visible or not.
I think this is a good practice that reviewers, whenever possible, should do.

In general I think the idea of linking reviews to specific downloads might work.
i.e. when you write a review, you are reviewing a specific download, not an entire gamepage.
Of course, leaving aside the complexities of coding that, we'd also have to make sure the reviews stayed up (for posterity) even if the download in question was taken down.

I pitched this in IRC (or maybe it was Staff forum?) and the general consensus was "no, you're stupid for suggesting it kenton."
I think I suggested that if the game is a demo you could submit a Critique (or some synonym thereof) and a Full or Canceled game (both I consider to be "finished") a Review. And until the game is finished, the Critique scores would make up the average, and when it moves to a finished state, the Review scores count. iirc.

Agree, 100%. (Although I personally update reviews if the developer tells me they've released a new/full version)

It seems that the review is becoming more extensive than I previously thought. I guess it'll probably be tomorrow when I submit it.

I'm looking forward to the review :) Yeah, they can be quite tough to write.
Yeah, especially when trying to be thoughtful and insightful as I try to be.

That would be Saturday. Writing a review is definitely more work than playing since it requires more concentration, but unlike playing you can really take your time to get it right.

I have been played EpiQuest pretty much non-stop since the weekend. I never got inspired to write out the review for Carlsev Saga: Episode I, but I think tonight I need a little break from playing ...

Demos are usually all that a creator's attention span can muster before they either A) quit. B) have a new idea C) continue with life outside RPGM
I agree with this. Worse yet, are the project that are just vaporware. I would suggest developers read this article written by Neok to keep themselves interested/motivated:

Perhaps I'll eventually will do one for gameplayers as well, since they also give up easily! (Unless you are playing something like Zero's Impossible Fortress, which, by the way, I haven't even bothered to try.) It's crazy having people writing reviews of games that haven't exactly finished. I, for one, wouldn't do it.

This is excellent. This is what I meant Max McGee's playlist to be like, but I just haven't had the time.
The last thing ShortStar said is right. Shit, it's true for me and I'm one of the complete-game-makingest guys around.
Yeah, MM, thanks for the head up. Hopefully I will be able to refine this topic in time, but for now, it'll have to do. Glad you're in the completed games club. I think your issue might be managing too many projects at the same time. I imagine that, though, might be advantageous to not get bored on just developing one. Especially, having to playtest over and over your game must be somewhat of a chore. At least you can choose another project at any time. In addition to playing games made by others. I definitely respect developers who choose to give the light of day to try other people's work.

Late last night, I finally finished playing: Deckiller's Carlsev Saga: Episode I. It took me about 10 gameplay hours according to the clock in the game. I will be writing over the weekend a review for this one!
I was hoping that the demo for Episode II would be out this weekend as well, but Deckiller let me know that its release will be postponed until next weekend. Since the patch for dezz123's Faith hasn't been posted yet, I'll continue to hold back playing that demo.
I will thus play the complete version of ShortStar's EpiQuest. I played the demo version a couple of week's ago. I would like to play it again, right from the star to see what kind of changes have been made. I suspect I will review this one as well.
Another complete game I have downloaded is mongoosezxc's Awesome Quest:

I'm glad that quite a few complete games have been posted recently in RMN. Most of the time, it's mostly demos. Not that I have anything particular against demos, but most games get stuck on that status for a while.

I'm not sure I understand. So are you taking requests to play games or are you just keeping track of whatever games you decide to start playing? Also, will you be reviewing all of the games you play?
My guess is that you might be thinking that I would model this after MaxMcGee's playlist or Fallen-Griever's review thread. I'm not sure of their particulars, but I want to establish something of my own here.
For now, the thread will be for me and whoever is interested to keep track of whatever game I might be playing. Given that there's quite a few recent releases available now, I'll try working through them in an order determined by my particular interest in them.
There might a point in time that I don't see anything recent and worthy, so that I might ask people to offer their suggestions, especially if they would like somebody else to try their game and provide feedback on it.
I won't necessarily give a review to all I play, unless I think it merits one. I'll definitely try to provide some feedback to the developer otherwise as I did with RS! X.
It was quite a coincidence that Deckiller asked me to play his game, which I had already set my mind to do since last night. Also, given that he said that his game would take around 8 hours long, that ought to make it worthy of writing of review for. The first hour or so I have played so far makes me think this will be the case.
I hope this is clear enough.
