Games released in 2009

author=VideoWizard link=topic=3094.msg60669#msg60669 date=1233870875
This is meant to be a list of all games released in 2009, whether they be re-releases, demos, tech demos, or complete games.

VideoWizard, you must have read my suggestion from the 2008 releases topic and I'm glad you have taken the initiative to get it started. Once you get this topic stickied, we'll be in good shape.

It's a good thing you mention for each the title of the game, who made it, date of release, its status of completion and a link to either the game page or forum topic.

May I suggest, for the Quintessence listing saying somehow that chapters 1-9 have been released so far. The handling of episodic games such as this one, I believe, deserves a slightly different treatment than regular demos. I leave it in your capable hands to edit this entry it as you see fit.

Keep up (literally) the good work! :)

What games were released in 2008?

Did YOU release anything significant?

I'm looking to compile a list of games that were released, completed, or put out a significant demo update in the past year. I meant to keep track of this but... meh.

kentona,

At the risk of sounding obvious, how about this simple idea for the future:

Starting a stickied topic so that the 2009 (and future years as needed) releases can be tracked? I guess the only thing is to make sure everybody adding a game or posting it in the forums adds theirs to the topic. Either that, or have someone make sure to update the list ever so often ...
I'm too lazy. (I meant to)

Then, why not let somebody like VideoWizard, if he's willing and commited to do it, take charge of this little project? Or perhaps some other RMN member could do it? I wonder what others think of this idea ... Heck, I will volunteer myself if nobody cares to do it ...

Nevermind, I guess VideoWizard read this thread and decided to go ahead do it! :)
You can find the thread of games released so far this year here:

Official RMN Changes

I like the fact that the latest game updates section was added to the homepage, although the new arrangement isn't quite as aesthetically pleasing. Something I would really like to see along with the other changes to the game listings is for the A-Z Listing to actually be A-Z instead of pick a number between one and fifty-four. Please tell me this is going to happen eventually, please.

Yeah, I'll agree that will be useful, given that the listing of games is growing day after day. There used to be another website (I don't remember if it was rm2knet or the old gamingw), that also let you see game listing by date added or popularity (it was probably based on number of downloads), which would be two other useful ways of having the listings.

Another improvement that I would like to see and at some point and that WIP mentioned that would have been part of RMN3 is the ability to search anywhere in RMN including the forums. For example, sometimes I would like to refer to somebody's comment way back and don't recall in which forum topic something was mentioned.

And yeah as GOGP also said earlier in the post ... while I haven't been involved in the community until recently, I did notice that WIP's latest interventions in the forums had been less than friendly, making his exit less than unexpected. I do wish him the best of luck! Hopefully, those of us who remain involved will set a better tone for this community ...

Best Completed Game
Most Promising Demo

Writing
------------------
Best Plot
Best Dialogue
Best Protagonist
Best Villain
Best Character Design

Audiovisual
------------------
Best Atmosphere
Best Graphics & Artwork
Best Music
Best Sound
Best Cinematics

Game Design
------------------

Wisaos
-----------------
Worst Game of the Year
Biggest Disappointment (Overhyped Award)
Worst Case of Vaporitis

20 Misaos proper, 3 Wisaos (or, in physics, Anti-Misaos)

OK. I think overall this list should satisfy most of you. There might be a slight gripe or two from some of you, but it definitely makes more sense than last year's list of categories. Last year, there were 52 of them (7 Wisaos) with 5 of them without even getting any nominees. So keeping the categories focused seems to make sense for a better selection process. Perhaps a little description of the categories not under GOY and Wisaos (which I think are the most self-explanatory!) would be in order to clear any confusion anybody might have ...

Sorry if it's a wrong place to say that, but is Indinera ("DZK", Laxius Power saga creator) known here ? Cause I know he has won some Misaos for LP III. (I know him, he's in the french speaking community ^^) It's just for curiousity. ^^ (a time he was an ennemi to me but now he's more like a friend - ...hum sorry I tell my life ^^' xD)

Hum a thing more interessant for you : our RM competition in french speaking community. I think it's open for not french games, there is a special section for them. (I'm not sure, I will search if this interesting anybody :3)

(but I realize I'm not in the topic of this thread, sorry ^^)

Not english games are accepted in Misao ?

Of course, DZK is known here. While RMN focuses on amateur and indie non-commercial (free!) games, his last release, Laxius Force, was released commercially as such has not been promoted here. I read he will continue to release free games from time to time, so it might not be the last time we hear from him in this forum ... There is another well-known french rpg maker (he also had one of the cjb.net web pages!), Kamau, author of the Legion Saga series of games; perhaps you heard of him as well?

Regarding non-English games, I don't see why they could be nominated for a Misao, if enough people do so. Although, given that you are talking about a game in a foreign language, it would seem quite unlikely but not impossible because of the so-called "language barrier". A more probable scenario would be if a game were translated into English but originally made in another language. I'm pretty sure we are missing out on some GREAT games probably because they happen to be in a foreign language (at least to most of us) and thus, don't get promoted here!

Personally, my intent that started this whole demo vs. complete game debate was to argue that there should be at least one category, namely, the most prestigious award (call it GOY or Best Game) that demos couldn't be nominated for. The idea is to reward those who actually do the effort to produce completed games. One of the purposes of this would be that, hopefully, in time, completed games would start being more common in RMN. For now, we have a LOT in production (or is that indefinite Hiatus???, for many) or, worse, canceled.

I currently think that restricting nominations of all the other categories to completed games only is a bit too extreme and somewhat impractical. Once we start seeing more completed games, then I might agree with this restriction.

Brandonabley's suggestion of episodic releases for RPGs perhaps ought to be a model that more of you ought to look into instead of the traditional demo -> complete game. For reference, look at how The Way did, and currently ongoing, Master of the Wind and Quintessence have done it.

I just don't see why a half-finished game should get "Best RPG" or whatever. For all we know, the unfinished parts of the game could be completely shit!

At last, somebody that sees my point on the debate of Demos vs. Completed games for the Misaos. I am aware that to actually complete a game (yes, even the not so good ones!), it requires a certain quality that some of you seem to lack. This explains why less than 10% of the games posted in RMN are actually complete (Can somebody actually explain why this is so and what can be done to change this?).

Encouraging people to produce mostly Demos that become projects that get CANCELLED, are NEVER released or take a LONG time to be released as a complete game is something that doesn't make sense. Especially if you consider or award one of them with one of the major awards, such as GOY, IMHO. For some of the other awards, I don't see as much of an issue for the Demos, if the work merits the award or nomination.

Sorry if I ticked somebody off, but I'm pretty sure some of you will happen to agree with this argument, especially those who have actually released complete games and would like to see their efforts rewarded.

What did you think about Glacia

Downloaded and installed. Needed to download and RTP, but it works!

I fixed the file download I don't know what was wrong before but it is fixed now

OK. I noticed that the download is now down to 90 MB, so you must have fixed something on it. I'll try downloading and will let you know if I run across the same issue as before. Otherwise, you can expect some feedback from me in the near future ...
