Erik is a horrible person who blackmails and threatens a woman out of "love". No matter his lifestory, I cannot sympathize with a person who does something like that (and imo this behaviour is what makes him a monster!). Quasimodo wins by default, because iirc his attraction to Esmerelda never crosses the line into violence.

The good news is there are plans to eventually release an update that includes all randomness taken out of that encounter, since YEAH that has been one of the consistent complaints we've gotten. Keep watching this page for news of when that happens! I can't promise anything happening extremely soon, but there will 100% be an update coming that fixes that.

NOW THIS ONE HAS A FUNNY STORY fun fact: this is a standard issue revolver that Russian Soldiers had in WWI! I did a shitload of research to find that out, and then looked up images and what have you so I could have the right gun for my gaming character (who later ended up being one of the MCs in a game i helped make, fancy that). I was super proud and really stoked she had this piece of equipment, but then hey guess what? First session, she gets into a bad encounter with a witch and it melts. Now she carries around the Gun Lump, as we have lovingly called it.
