Race and Gender in Games

author=SnowOwl
Another reflection that I have noted, maybe not here but on the internet in general.
Unpopular opinion incoming: If we assume it's true that certain races or LGBT people are underrepresented, I think part of the blame actually lies with the worst kind of SJWs. Lets say you make a game with a trans person, but an angry SJW doesn't like the way the person is being portrayed and decides that you are a bigot. You didn't mean any harm, and you thought you were being respectful.

The SJW gets his/her angry friends to fling shit at your game. Your reputation is ruined, without you having done more than put a trans person in your game. It's not the likeliest story there is, but it's a very real possibility, and I can guarantee you that alot of people think that this is a possibility unconsciously or consciously.

There is most likely at least one person that will be very vocal about you not portraying a group of people like they prefer on the internet. But since it's OK to fling shit at white males, and to some degree white females, that's alot easier to put into your game. Is it racism/sexism?

Hi, person who helped make a game with trans people in it here.

We didn't get one single ~SJW~ flinging shit at our game, but we got a whole fuckload of transphobic weirdos trying to "correct" how we portrayed certain characters. We even had some asshole send us a folder of screenshots with said "corrections", which were lit just examples of misgendering trans characters (and not even ~confusing~, non-binary people, either, but directly misgendering a trans woman who is indisputably a woman and uses she/her pronouns openly and never referenced as being trans apart from not "passing" for cis).

I have seen people do LPs of the game and be weird about the pronouns, drop the classic "THAT'S a GIRL?", called the trans women "transvestites", etc. The trans people who have played it have gone "look!!! people like me!!! <3" and been kind and supportive.

Even going to something more mainstream than trans stuff: everyone's cool with gay people now, right??? It's 2016! Nope. Go look at the Luxaren Allure page. While a lot of people are all "YAY LESBIANS <3" you still get weirdos being all "ugh this is WEIRD and so GAY i don't LIKE IT". Look at pretty much any game featuring lesbians, and you will get "WOW THAT'S SO FUKKEN HOT" from weird creepy dudes.

The problem isn't SJWs and has never BEEN SJWs. The problem is and continues to be bigots. If an "SJW" is saying "yikes this portrayal is Bad", consider that MAYBE the way you're portraying x minority is, idk, bad, and engage in some self-reflection/research.

Luxaren Allure

Not even, tbh. Persistent, yes, and defs like... starry eyed and filled with love at first sight, but never predatory, in my mind. More like an overly excited school girl than a creeper, y'know? It is a fine line, but I think unity kept it in that super innocent territory.

iirc she never says or does anything that's a big predator red flag! it's part of why i love merel/chisa so much ;__;

Mmh, I was okay with this for a while but I have to say I had to put it down after the "there's only one bed" scene with Merel and Chisa. That was majorly screwed up and uncomfortable.
I really don't understand what's screwed up about it. Nothing was forced, other options were presented, and Merel was asked not to do anything explicit. It was two ladies sharing a bed.

Not only that, there's also nothing sexual about it. It's lit just two women cuddling. Nothing more wholesome than that~

As An Adult, Do You Find Yourself Playing More Video Games At This Age Or Less?

You know, I'm not sure? Probably a smaller but comparable amount of time, only I stick to games made for FILTHY CASUALS instead of 60+ hour epics. I just don't have the TIIIIIME to play super in depth RPGs and games that take any skill. Like, Dark Souls? Fuck Dark Souls, I don't have time to learn that. I'll watch a friend play Dark Souls.

To that end, I'll usually watch other people play video games when I can! The stuff I invest the most time/energy into these days are things that have moderate structure and a lot of openness. Like I just spent the last week or so 100%ing ocarina of time, simply because the act of getting Every Heart Piece and Every Skulltula was relaxing. It feels nice to check things off a list! But spending that same amount of time trying to fight a hard boss in a game? I'D HATE IT!!!

i liked being challenged when I was a kid. these days i use vidyas to chill out and forget my troubles for a few hours. GIVE ME MY EASY MODE OR GIVE ME DEATH

Discrimination within the narrative

@Desertopa: I don't like having discrimination as flavour in stories because that is literally my life already. Myself and most of the people I love cope with some flavour of everyday discrimination, and you know what? It's tiring. I don't like feeling like a Weird Different Out Of Place person, sometimes I just want to feel normal.

When I write, I create an idealized narrative where someone like me can openly exist in, say, the 1920s or a fantasy world that is usually horrible for women/trans folks/lgb folks/disabled folks/etc.. I think this is just as useful as directly addressing discrimination through a narrative, since it creates a platform where people outside the norm ARE normalized without further exhausting marginalized people. Instead, it is empowering. We can look at these narratives and see that it is possible to exist without being inherently punished, y'know?

Plus, a lot of times discrimination as a sideplot is handled v awkwardly, like... idk, remember the half-elf racism in Tales of Symphonia? If you haven't played it, don't waste your time. If you have: holy shit, remember how clumsy that shit was? It was more about the human protag -- a person who was privileged by that universe insofar as race goes -- standing up for his half elf friends, who rarely spoke up for themselves and instead were subject to horrible, violent abuse from most of the people around them. And in the end?? The resolution we got?? "Racism is bad.... we shouldn't do racism.... but also HALF-ELVES STANDING UP FOR THEMSELVES IN UNSAVORY WAYS THAT INVOKE VIOLENCE TO ANSWER THE VIOLENCE THEY FACE IS JUST AS BAD AS ACTUAL DISCRIMINATION!!!!" which is just such a huge No, You're Wrong, Narrative.

idk. I don't like to directly address discrimination because I already do that irl. I like my escapism. I'm sick of lazy narratives that end with the radical thought "DISCRIMINATION... IS WRONG MAYBE... WOW" since w/e man a literal 4 year old could tell you that. If you can't do better than that, don't include it (not addressing you personally, here, that was a general you!)

"On Let's Plays" - Dev expresses plight over how LP's have impacted his game's sales

author=Liberty
As for linear games? People will buy them if they like them, even if they saw how it ends. How many people on this site still played Dreaming Mary despite seeing LPs of it. Fuck that, how many people downloaded fucking Pom even after seeing a full LP of it?

I don't have a lot of Opinions on this one, since I'm neither and LPer nor a commercial developer, but this statement did stand out to me as a bit of a false equivalence. Dreaming Mary and Pom were both free games, and the one in question is not.

Later on you go to say games like Stardew Valley have blown up, but like... that kind of game, the point is that you should play it yourself.

*big shrug* idk I guess, if this guy is gonna release a hella linear game and put a price tag on it... IDK, MAN. tbh my gut reaction is "well maybe Don't make linear games if you're going to charge for them since of course this is going to happen and of course if it's not a powerful enough experience to warrant a player playing it themself, they'll watch someone else do it for free" but I'm not sure how fair of an assessment that is. As I said: not a commercial dev.

I'd be interested in hearing from a commercial dev on this one.

They gave me a bunch of wasabi with my sushi tonight! My sinuses are finally clear!

idk when i started doing it, but i've stared bathing my sushi in wasabi

it's just so good???? it's so good
