I guess I should say "I'm Back"?

Sort of just re-found this place, and remembered how awesome the discussion is here versus other forums.

I was born in 1986, in England. Moved to Canada when I was 4, and have lived in the Toronto area ever since. My favorite food is yet to be decided, as I seriously haven't eaten that much different foods in my lifetime. Although I really love home-made Stir Fry. My favorite beverage is chocolate milk, followed closely by Guinness. Favorite movies/tv/etc change too often to pick anything. I am currently watching House and Lost. Favorite game series, in order, are Metroid, Megaman, Fallout, and Warcraft/Star Craft/Diablo. Along with a few outlying games from the Mana series (Secret of Mana and SD3), Final Fantasy IV, VI, X-2, XII, and the Crystal Chronicles games. As well as plenty of other games.

I don't really make RPG Maker games anymore; but I do still play many games, RPG and otherwise, and I am still designing them.

I've been in the RM* community for a bazillion years. I've never completed a real game (contests aside,) and have never released a game demo that was longer than 30 minutes. Although, I have made some good games. I just don't release them and definitely never finish them.

I was majoring in college in Computer Science and System's Administration, but I dropped out (got kicked out) due to a series of bad semesters. Currently, I am a chemical lawn technician for a lawn-care company but I think I am going to go back to school for Landscaping and Business, possibly even Architecture (I've been accepted twice for Architecture and Drafting, so I don't think that is going to be a huge issue.)

I own a Wii, have an X-Box 360 in my house, and play PS3 with friends. I also own a light pink Nintendo DS Lite. Both my DS and Wii are boring the crap out of me at the moment. I think I accidentally picked up a like for the 360 Shooter games, like Gears of War and Call of Duty. Luckily, I can play those on my PC when I don't have access to the 360.

I also play World of Warcraft, with several characters spread across several servers. I have an 80 Protection Paladin with raid gear on Korgath (Horde-Side), I have a 70 shaman on the same server, and I have a 70 mage/hunter combo alliance side on Alterac Mountains. I am an avid MMORPG fan, and have played almost every MMO that has been released in North America.

Other than that, I am going to be lurking around here. I've set it up in my Firefox bookmark toolbar which means I am going to be clicking it at least three times a day. Mostly just going to comment on people's work, and join in with game discussion. You probably won't find me in the Game Creation area (for however long it lasts until RMN3) very much unless to comment on a screenshot or something.

The Circle Trilogy - Ted Dekker

The Circle Trilogy by Ted Dekker is a three-part fiction series, titled Black, Red, and White. It follows the main character, Thomas Hunter, who through a series of.. well.. quite literally blows to the head, discovers that there are two worlds existing in parallel. The "Ancient Earth", which is actually our Earth, and the current "Earth" which is a high-fantasy based world.

Thomas Hunter has the unique ability to travel between the worlds, by dreaming. Although he has no idea which is the real world and which is the dream world, he is posed with a prevalent problem in each. In the "Ancient Earth", a terrorist organization seek to use a virus to take the world hostage and sell an anti-virus to accrue untold wealth and power. In "Earth", the delicate balance between good and evil has been shattered, so Thomas and his followers must fight for survival against the overwhelming 'Horde'.

I have just read these books, and was blown away. They are full of philosophy, religious parallels, and politics. Beyond that, there is a captivating love interest and plenty of action to boot.

The author, son of two missionaries, uses biblical allusion to strengthen the morals and concepts in the book. The idea of identifying the black and white of Good and Evil in a world of grey, and the themes of rebirth and revival are constant throughout the entire trilogy, particularly in the fantasy world.

For a book about philosophy, religion, and politics, Thomas Hunter is a bad ass lead. For no reason, other than to take up the charge of heroism, he stands tough against overwhelming odds and insurmountable foes. First taking on a major corporation, progressing to a terrorist organization, and then to the United States government. While at the same time, infiltrating the heart of evil, battling hordes of enemies, and eventually leading the world to peace in the parallel fantasy world.

I'm not pretending to be a great reviewer, but I highly suggest this trilogy to anyone inclined to good reading. And for those who don't have the patience or time to soak in a good book or three, there is a Graphic Novel print of this trilogy available as well. The artwork is beautiful, and perfectly illustrates the novels. I couldn't bring myself to put these books down, and recommend them in the highest regard.

RPG Maker VX Information Website

Both to help out RPG Maker Network, and to compile all the information about RMVX I can muster, I am working on a General Information website. It's not pretty, but it's functional.

Unofficial RPG Maker VX Information Website

As information becomes available, and as I add more information, I will keep this post updated.

Explanation

This script restores the functionality of Encounter Areas from RM2k and RM2k3. By adding objects to the EncounterAreas::AREAS Hash, you can set up rectangles with various settings. Battle Backgrounds, Battle Music, and which monsters will appear.

RPG Maker VX. RMVX is to RMXP what RM2k3 is to RM2k; RMVX release date announced

http://www.rpgrevolution.com/article/news/2007/10/0501.php

New edition of RPG Maker XP, with some new features. Mainly improved performance, easier scripting (hopefully they update for the new version of Ruby), and new autotile features.

Also, considering they have a new artist for Monsters, it is very likely we'll see a brand new RTP.

The price is set at about $99USD in Yen, there is no slated release date for America, nor any reason to believe it will be released in America except that RMXP was. The Japanese release date is December 27th '07, and some websites elude to that there will be more information, perhaps some sort of promo, on October 9th.

We can just wait and see.

Anyhow, what are your thoughts? If they release it in America, hopefully there will be some sort of discount for those of us who held onto our receipts for RMXP, but unlikely. I for one will be willing to shell out the money though (it will likely be cheaper than $99, as RMXP was much cheaper than it's Japanese price since we got no box or manuals or sample games.) Mainly for the improved performance. RMXP doesn't run optimally, and I would prefer to play an RMVX game over an RMXP of equal quality and style, assuming they are going to deliver what they boast.

Also a new RTP would be very nice. I'm fucking tired of Aluxes.

Why?

Why are you approving obvious crap like this? I don't mind newbie attempts, but this is so obviously a joke. And to know it comes from Grod, it's obviously some sort of odd way to annoy the members and staff of the website.

Lufia 2 XP Engine - Comments and Suggestions?

Made this in about 2 days work (total of 7 hours? including compiling and editing graphics.)

I have a few things left to do, but what do you guys think so far?

Real-Time Strategy RPG Combat

This isn't specifically something new, but it is definitely something I've seen cropping up a lot lately.

We all know that the regular turn-based RPG Combat system is getting a bit tired. It's very difficult to make it fun and interesting. Most new RPGs have been opting for a Action based system.

First, I think I should specify what a Real-Time Strategy RPG Combat system is. Essentially, it controls like Warcraft/Starcraft and other RTS games. You select your heroes, give them destinations to walk to, targets to attack, and issue them individual commands when necessary. Otherwise, they will react to incoming attacks on their own.

I first noticed this in Final Fantasy 12. This is a very loose RTS engine as you can't really freely move your characters around once combat begins, as it is rarely beneficial.

Shortly after Final Fantasy 12, FF12:RW was announced. It has a very similar system to FF12, but due to the DS's touch screen capabilities, it apparently plays almost exactly like an Real-Time Strategy.

Then there is the new Seiken Densetsu (Secret of Mana) game, for DS, which is exactly like an RTS. As well as Growlanser 5.

There are probably a few others too, such as the old PC RPG Silver which is arguably RTS.

The system has also creeped into the Massive Multiplayer Online RPG. A relatively new asian MMORPG called Sword of the New World (or Granado Espada) lets you control 3 characters at a time, issuing commands exactly like an RTS. I think it actually plays particularly well. Much better than Guild Wars does.

So what are your thoughts? This may become the new Side-View battle system as far as RPGs go.
