I've noticed it too, but I find it kinda endearing in a weird way?
Someone in the comments even said that his randomness is inversely proportional to a game's difficulty, so I imagine he'll get less random as time goes on.

like the extreme narcissist i am, im mostly watching for my levels anyway, kek

If I had my laptop back, I'd love to join another SMBX event.
I know at the time, most people were just auffering SMBX burnout, but if another event happens and I don't have a laptop, I still wanna see people work on another community project. ^^

I'm sure there are plenty of people here who'd be willing to do a test run if they haven't already.

Plenty of people on the site or people in this project?
If in this project... I think the point of having his friend play it is for him to see it from a fresh new pair of eyes and see what changes would need to be made with that mindset... um, well, in mind. .3.

If you're suggesting just some random joe who had no part in this project while on this site, I guess it would work, but I feel it'd be a little awkward.
After all, we're talking about a site dedicated to the development of games, where this was a big event on the front page for the longest time. If anyone had any interest in it, they would have joined or otherwise had something of their own going on. At the very least, it'll be hard to find that one person who didn't join the project that doesn't have their own thing going, has or is at least willing to download SMBX, and is willing to play the game.
That is, if you're just talking about the random joe.

Well, I just completed my sixth full test run of the game. This one was a little slower and more involved. Playing each stage as Mario, I did my best to fully clear out everything as I went; beat every monster, break every brick, collect every coin. I was able to pull it off for almost every level! So the "Destroy the World and Everything Inside" test was a success. On Sunday, I'll be patching the game with the last of my notes. After that, it's as good as I can possibly make it on my own. All that's left is for my irl buddy to do his test run, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut...it's complicated.

See, I actually live with the guy. He's my sister's boyfriend and we all rent an apartment together. But his schedule is sporadic as hell. He works for Starbucks and has limited control over his hours. He also needs to devote lots of time to helping my sister, as we've been in a bad way for several months now. On top of everything else, he's never really played the old Mario games before, and he wanted to try the originals first. Since most of them are two-player, we're taking them all on together when we have the time; the key issue being TIME.

So once life stops raping our asses and we get through the old Marios, he'll test run the game while I take notes. I'll release it after that. In the meantime, I have a whole pile of screenshots ready and I plan to pimp out the gamepage a little, too. I'm otherwise sitting on an essentially finished product and waiting for the stars to align.

I made that sound worse than it is, but I'm so over all this by now, I'm just glad I don't have to worry about it anymore.

Holy crap. I don't even think Super RMN World went through these many hoops before a finished product came out, even with its... six(I think) judges! Like, WOW.
Also, your friend wants to play the original Marios before trying this game? Makes sense - curious what that entails, though, since this is based on Yoshi's Island. Is he just thinking the original three, plus World, and/or plus World 2? Any others would seem unnecessary.
It also feels weird that with you guys apparently playing 2 player through the originals, only for him to do it alone for the main game he's testing. It makes sense, the point is to get what a new player's perspective would be on it, and I'm sure asking him to play it again would feel really awkward and you've probably played the game so much that you are in your room screaming its name in your sleep every other night and playing it in your sleep the remaining nights, and getting two new people after everyone's already waited so long for a final product would seem a little rediculous(especially with how rare and awkward the SMBX 2-player is to begin with), but at the same time, we've gone so far with this game in making it as near-flawless as we possibly can given the limitations of an entire team of human beings connected through this site and then some and the limitations of an engine dropped by its creator leaving many awkward mistakes and problems with the "final" version we have accessible to us, that suddenly stopping it before a two-player test just feels... weird.
And in no way and I insane or awful enough of a person to suggest anyone doing that nor me doing it myself - we all have lives - but it's like, at the same time, it leaves an awkward empty feeling. Like, if people looked at the development history for this SMBX episode, they'd see where it stopped before being released and be like "Huh, weird." or "Why didn't they take the extra step since they already went so far?" without realizing the problems with that.

Big dramatic post of dramaticness aside, I'm glad to hear progress is still going and that soon, this project will come to a close with a completed, finished game. :D
More than I can say about anything I've ever made on my own. :D

inb4 it turns out the entire project folder got accidentally permanently deleted by hali as well as from everyone else's computers and we all need to restart again ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

CHECK YOUR STAGES

Take your break as needed, I'm glad to see the end is nigh, can't wait to get my jaws on the real thing~

However I played through "A Cheesy Level", and I like the changes, though I'd suggest you move the pipe into the bonus room a tile or two down so the player can jump to it without hitting the ceiling and landing in cheese first. The puzzle was done very nicely, it's the best that it could have been done in my opinion - I can see the original issue with the first level, why it was changed, was because the bonus room was being forced to be used to finish the level, which I can see could be considered very awkward and bad design - forcing a bonus room.
Replacing the koopas with the different type of mousers works nicely as well. :3
I just feel weird about hiding the switch among other blocks. I see why you did it that way, I kept calling it a 'puzzle' after all, it's just a nitpick, not something you have to change. It's just, you're going to hit every block anyways, it just ends up jarring when one of them does something different.

Also, about Bill Bouncing? I was just complaining and angsting - life kinda sucks right now and a creator tends to be their worst critic, I guess.
My complaints boiled down to "was my design choices really that bad, so much was changed, fuuuuu-" like a whiny little child, but thinking back on it, the level is a lot better than it was before.

BTW, it took me so long to do so because I hadn't found a place with internet, so sorry for making you wait for my responses. ^_^;

CHECK YOUR STAGES

Played through A Cheesy Level finally and I still feel like the "puzzle" in the middle of the level is a mess - and the koopas in the bonus room giving the 1-ups? Yeah, most of them despawn the second they go off-screen. Darn SWM Koopas, stealing all our 1-ups.
Of course, these have been issues with the level for a while, so once again I'm late on the draw(and just as with Bill Bouncin', it was my fault).
I remember in early versions of the level I tried to design it so you never actually had to touch the cheese - if you were skilled enough, you could avoid it. Even if you didn't have a Yoshi or a way to fly.
To get one of the flowers now and avoid the cheese, you'd need to fly into a little crevice(it's the part before the "puzzle"). If something could be done about that, I'd greatly appreciate it.

CHECK YOUR STAGES

I wish I would have seen this sooner
I keep forgetting to check RMN for updates, and given my current living situations, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get anything done anymore.

Still, I'll see about playing my levels the next chance I get, and I'll post my responses for your changes here.
I forgot if I said anything about Bill Bouncing in Billowy Brumes a long time ago, but I am not looking forward to that stage right now. XD

Edit: I've finally played at least the first two levels.
Tempest Valley
No problems here, honestly. I really like the addition of the ending bits, though - when I realized what you were doing by rewarding players for collecting flowers with a special little end-clear for that level, I couldn't help but suddenly feel excited for Bill Bouncin'~

Bill Bouncin' In Billowy Brumes
Oh my.
Okay, so not many changes from the last version I played, I think if I haven't got my feelings out before, I may say it now though it is pretty much too late.
I feel the rework of how certain sections were done made it a little awkward - though that's from my perspective, as the person who designed the stage with a different mindset - it feels like a completely different stage near the end. At the same time, since it's been so long since I've touched these levels, I couldn't help but be frustrated with my own design choices, to the point I began doing things that I got onto AnimeBryan about(not that I had any right to - everyone plays differently) just to get the level over with.
But the ending bit didn't disappoint - not really.
I like how you had the player bounce off one of the bills to get to the end, but with all of those bills coming at you, I expected something a little more for some reason. Maybe I'm self-entitled, but since the stage gimmick was bouncing on Bullet Bills, a grand-finale for going through such an annoying stage(once again, most of it was my fault) to make it worth it would be having the player bounce on ever bill that comes at them after that point.
I can only imagine how annoying it must have been to place that one bullet in the exact right position to land on it though, so I can understand if you wouldn't want to do that for multiple bullets in a line.

I still haven't played A Cheesy Level, but the thing is, for as short as it is I don't have much time left before I have to leave the current hotel I'm in, so I just took a look at the level's first screen. My first reaction was "What the fuck is that?" when I saw the watermelon, but realized you were trying to keep power-ups similar to the level styles.
If you could have a Yoshi's Island-styled Mushroom, it'd probably look better to me. I just really was put off by suddenly watermelon, but I understand the change.

SRW2 Beta is Here!

That's actually something of note. I don't think I did World 2 Notes back when I was doing heavy amounts of notes, but I liked everything about Sinister Crypt EXCEPT the boss.
I felt like it was a noob trap to begin with, like it was impossible to see it coming and react in time without knowing about it first, literally dropping someone into another fight after the SMB1-styled fight, and I did have some issues keeping a Yoshi and good power-ups.

Probably because I suck.

But still, the one time I actually beat it was by pure luck.
Um, Hali, does SMB3 Bowser perhaps take damage from spikes? Specifically, sideways spikes that it can run into while in shell form?

Yeah, that happened to me. Was that the intended way of killing him, or was I just that lucky?

SRW2 Beta is Here!

This notification set felt so serious, then I saw Hali's and Frogge's interactions.
Thanks, guys. :3

i feel bad that i'm perpetually stuck at world 4
i've been stuck there for what feels to be about 5 weeks

My family's got a lot of stuff going on, which is the main reason why - lots of stress, lots of stuff to do. Still, I'm pretty sure I won't be that second completion anyways - it's better that it be someone recording videos for it, that way Hali has something more visual to fall back on if he so needs it rather than my constant ranting.

Can't wait to see AnimeBryan's second playthrough of the game for the secret content, and it gives me more reason to attempt a recording of the full game when it's out finally.

I kind of just want to get to World 9 as fast as I can
This mentality won't do you any favors. This isn't a game that's meant to be rushed through, and forcing yourself through it just to get it over with will only make you miserable. Please take your time; there's no reason to hurry.

Hm... how long do we have to test?
