RMVX ACE FEATURES AND DISCUSSION

Discussing the new features and changes in the upcoming RPG Maker VX Ace

RPG Maker VX Ace is the latest in Enterbrain's RPG Maker series expanding on the features of its predecessor, RPG Maker VX. The RPG Maker series gives the user the tools and engine to create their own traditional JRPG but with the latest installments the entire back end of the game is open and written in Ruby so users can change the inner workings of the game or even create their own scripts or use ones created by others to completely overhaul their game into their dream RPG and RPG Maker VX Ace is no exception! RPG Maker VX Ace supports graphical assets in PNG form with alpha channel support, audio files in OGG, MP3, and MIDI format with the capability of setting loop start points for OGGs, and playback of videos in OGV format.

Some of the improvements of Ace over VX are:
  • The return of unlimited tile sets!
  • Add a third layer to maps to allow for more tiles stacked on top of each other
  • Define your own battle algorithms and assign them globally or to specific items and skills without having to use the script editor
  • Adds a new battle stat: TP. TP is meant to be used akin to the limit break or trance gauges in Final Fantasy 7 and 9 respectively to perform special attacks with the option of redefining how they're used allowing for rage-style skills integrated directly into the editor and other possibilities!
  • Allow events to bring up the item menu and select an item allowing the player to use an item to interact with events seamlessly
  • The Ruby interpreter is updated to 1.9 from VX's 1.8.3 which has significant speed improvements in processor intensive tasks

RPG Maker VX Ace has a Japanese release date of December 15th, 2011. Enterbrain has not announced that an English version will be made available in the future.

Here's some screenshots of VXAce:

The Map Editor

The Script editor with the "managers"

I see 1 lower layer, 1 event layer, and 1 weird layer that's probably Terrain Tagging as seen below. I also tried the tab thing and the lower layer replaces the upper layer.

Encounter Area Tagging for the 3rd option

The New Database Editor:

The New Class Editor: (You also set EXP here)

The New Skill Editor:

The Title Screen has now layer options and stuff. You can also change the color of the window skin too. ETc.

The Generator

Layering in effect

HOLY SHIT THE MUSIC IS ACTUALLY DECENT?!?!?!?!?!
THE MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS ARE REALLY NICE. Now they added XP sound effects apparently

WHOA you can control font size in the game without using scripts. See below:
They also added some new functions:

Menu screen with more save slots and ordering your party as much as you want :D

Status screen has biography and stuff now! It looks better than before!

Items Skills are now categorized

Equipment screen now has auto optimize and remove all

Battle Messages are super familiar e v e

Auto map name~

Shop~

Man I swear the music is really nice.
The animations and transitions of the windows are so cool and everything!

Lol Credits roll

Rhyme Shares:
Apparently autoshadows are affected by the shift key now so you can eliminate autoshadows with the shift key technically.

@Max: Considering how much of an improvement RGSS3 is, you should expect fanmade resources which blow YEM out of the water to be in the pipeline.
If YEM uses custom classes that are not dependent on VX then odds are pretty high that it works with VX Ace, although it would probably require a few edits for the new modules, and of course it might not be taking advantage of the newest methods offered.

So far I've been able to port all the battle systems I've made to VX Ace with minor editing.
Oh 4-directional passibility, how I missed you.
Crap, I just started writing a lengthy series of tutorials for regular VX. Again I say, Crap.

This makes me sad...I hope they do a translation. ^__^
Hopefully but if not it won't take long for an English version to come out. Hell 12 hours later and the important parts of the trial have already been done.
Yanfly is working on Yanfly Engine 6, which he will be rejigging for RMVXAce. It will probably have similar functionality as YEM when it's done, plus whatever new stuff Ace offers.

mmmmsadfmmfmmmmmmmmmm the refurbished code/rgss3 in general is just

code-boner compared to VX

And, in the infamous words of Google Translate when figuring out secondary stats:

Magic jump attack 撃 wo do ne return rate desu desu.

RGSS3 is almost good enough to justify the still terrible mapping system.
I haven't used the demo yet, but I thought the mapping system was essentially RMXP's mapping system, but with 3 layers? (and I thought the consensus was that XP's mapping is the best one so far)

Not quite. The tilesets are still limited and the autotiles still don't have as many frames/tiles. It's better than VX, but it's still not as good as XP's.

It's still 2 layers. One for "A" tiles and one for the "B", "C", "D", and "E" layers. Auto-tiles are still a pain to work with, but with 4-dir passibility at least we aren't as limited with map layouts anymore, especially with cliffs.

I love the way traits work, although apparently only some work on Actors. I can add a skill to an actor that their class wouldn't normally allow or give them +20% MDEF, but I can't, say, make their attacks inflict Poison.

I'm having no problems with it. You sure you have the right box checked?
Anyone else beat the trial demo story? I liked that the boss had a unique death animation.

I mean the Actor trait box exactly. That said, I might just not be noticing the right thing because so much is still in Japanese. I'm not that worried.

Yup. Of course, I had no idea what skills did until Google translate + codechecking, but it was nifty on the whole.

Yes! Oh man, I'm seriously loving all the upgrades. The new graphics are really nice (I mean... I'll probably never use them, but they're SO cute) and HNNNGH MUSIC THAT DOESN'T RESTART AFTER BATTLES <3333

I'm not much of a programmer (who am I kidding, the only thing I can do is print "LOLOL RALPH LUVS ULRIKA" and make a calculator), so I haven't dicked around in the coding that much, but maaaaan this stuff you guys are talking about seems so fancy. <3

I can't wait til the translated trial comes out! ;w;
EDIT: Oop, the English fan translation is ready. OKAY, TIME FOR SRS DICKING AROUND <3
About time, enterbrain. I don't want to waste my free demo, however, so i'll most likely download it later.

And....ABOUT TIME! UNLIMITED TILESETS AGAIN, WOOT!

This is an awesome addition. I have to hook up with some Ace projects in future.

I could literally gush for hours about how happy this feature makes me. I would switch to Ace SIMPLY for this feature. (....okay well I'm exaggerating a little bit)
It is one of my biggest pet peeves in games to have gorgeous music playing in the background and then never getting to hear all of it because of battles interrupting things. ;__; It's especially awful in games with random battles (and even worse when there are high encounter rates), because you end up hearing the same part of a song over and over and over and over and AGGGGHHH
I'm really glad Enterbrain FINALLY added this feature in. xD
