Description

M.O.G. "My Own Game" Multipart Event - Game Creation

In this event we will attempt create a game using resources generated during the previous MOG events.

The intent is to get people out of their comfort zones and attempt the different aspects of game creation. The M.O.G. initiative be a 3-part event, with each event focusing on a different aspect - soundtrack, graphics, and game creation. This event will focus on the GAME. The graphics event focused on tilesets, charsets, and battlers and the like, and the music event focused on soundtracks and sound effects. This is the final event of the MOG creation series, wherein we create a game but only using resources created in the previous two events (+ general public resources or resources you create yourself or RTP, to fill gaps)!

This is a pretty ambitious undertaking, but it sounds pretty satisfying, too!

The MOG Music and MOG Graphics events are still running, but they wrap up later this month, so if you have any special requests or gaps that need filling, now is the time to ask! Or encourage people there who have started something to finish their work. (Knowing that someone wants to use your stuff is great motivation).

If you use resources by someone else in the MOG Graphics and/or Music events, please include them in your gameprofile's 'Developers' as Other (and specify what you used)

Like, if you used Ratty524's awesome battlers, do:

Other (Battlers) - Ratty524

The bonus makerscore for resource creators is part of the event, so if you would be so kind as to included them in your gameprofile, it would be much appreciated!

This event is asking you to make a game, or make a demo/prototype. As such, you will need to have a gameprofile accepted by RMN (and subject to RMN's submission rules), to participate. Once ready, you will have to submit your game's download to this event (using the Submit button in the upper right). Multiple games are welcome (if you are so inclined)!

THIS IS NOT A COMPETITION

We are doing this for the betterment of our game development skills. Familiarization with other aspects of game development, even if we never develop the expertise to be proficient in it, is still very valuable. That being said, I will be giving out achievements for:

-Full game
-Demo/Prototype game
-A gameprofile will good mapping examples

By that last one, what I mean is you've started work on a game using the MOG resources, but didn't generate anything playable yet.

Works submitted to this event are expected to be free to play.

While the event is very RPG-centric (hey, we are RPG Maker Network afterall!), feel free to create a game for any genre of your choice.

It is my sincere hope that those of us here who are energetic game developers might share with us their expertise and learning. Either by helping out individuals in the comments section, offering advice, or posting links to useful resources, or even as far as writing tutorials of their own.

Members who take it upon themselves to be super-helpful in this event will receive a special achievement!

Done. Finally done.

Not to toot my own horn, but I think I made the best final boss I've ever made. It's made of 100% pure awesome. Seriously, if anyone doesn't like it, I will feed them a live kitten or something. :P
I'm sorry,. that's just disturbing...

>_> It's supposed to be just a dumb joke. Sorry if you took offense to it.

Even when the site tells you its down, my upload went through anyways. Next time it happens just load a different page of RMN and then navigate back to where the download should be.

I've been having the website halt and tell me its down on almost everything I upload recently (images, etc.).

I got a site down message yesterday as well....
And so ends the ambitious MOG series of events! I have given out the final set of achievements (I think I got everybody...) and have wrapped up the event.

How did you guys like it? Do you think positive stuff came out of all of this? Was it as fruitful or fulfilling as you hoped?

I like the concept, and I really liked making my crappy sprite art. I think some really cool resources got made (but I haven't tried the games yet). I am a little disappointed by the lack of activity and fanfare for the final event. I was really hoping people would jump onboard for a month-long gamejam to celebrate the effort people went to into creating custom resources. That never happened. Maybe I didn't promote it enough? I don't know, but I am disappointed.

A big thanks to everyone who participated in any aspect of the series of events! It was fun running them.
It was an aweso--- OMG SO MUCH MAKERSCORE WHERE I DIDN'T SEE YOU JUMP FROM 12000 TO 16000 OMG

---A-ANYWAY *AHEM* I-it was a wonderful event. I got sad that I didn't atually get to make a game, but that's because inspiration kind of ran from me... But I'm happy to have made a considerably big res pack! ^-^' (and having contributed with, like, 60% of the MOG games' charsets. That felt goooooooooooood, it's awesome to see what people can do with your resources)
We could make this thing a yearly event, perhaps? It was awesome! :D
Also I FUCKING LOVED YOUR GRAPHICS
It's sad that there were so few games, but I think the timing contributed. It was a stuffed time to be sure.

It was really cool to see stuff of me actually used! And in a neat game to boot!

I didn't get to create a game with the MOG materials by the deadline, but I think I'm still going to create one using these materials. I also forgot to actually submit any of my songs to MOG music. Oh well!
It went surprisingly better than I thought it would. But then again, there were surprisingly only 4 entries too. I thought there would be at least 10 or so.

It could be the time, I only got time during the last week of the event. I had important stuff to do all the other times so I could just chip away at my submission.
I believe people were exhausted from the other 2 parts of MOG, this was an event unlike any other. I think we'll be more well prepared for a next one though.
Oh, I enjoyed making AW. But maybe it was a little too ambitious ( I should have simplified the story and just left the battle mechanics as is ) but hey, I got some lovely MS out of it and achievements to boot ( And I put it together in a little over 1 week, because making the resources took up a ton of my time ).

The MOG events were quite fun! I never really made a graphics pack for anyone before, so it was nice to try something different.

As far as the game submissions are concerned, well... Life is the master of chance.

The idea was great. I am bit ashamed I haven't made any contributions in music and graphics as I wanted to improve my 8-bit skills.
But some of the resources created are so cool, I can't get enuf of them and I may end up using them in some other project as well. I even haven't touched most of them, yet!
The problem of the third part was the time. And not the lack of it. I think people can better concentrate on gam makin, if they are stressed. Just look, how many contributions is for some more restricted events. The whole chain of events took over four months, that is allmost regular developement time (Or it was in times of Atari).
I did end up creating some stuff because of this event, but none that I really created for this event. I got some pixel art skills from this which was good enough for me!

I wouldn't have participated at all if less time was given.
:D Even with the small turnout, it was a ton of fun.

Probably only had so few people because December is the holiday season (Seeing family and doing exams and stuff for most of us, I'm sure), so most people were probably busy.

Also, it's only possible to get 2 out of 3 of the achievements? :( Aww. I had a complete game and everything, too.

EDIT: ...Apparently I forgot to change the game from "in production" to "complete" when I uploaded it. Doh. >_<
Well I forgot to mention that for this event you can only get one achievement and it was based on the current status of the project - complete, demo, or gameprofile only.
Or does it? Seriously, an event this awesome and people are caring about achievements??? xD
