Description

What're We Cooking?

A full game cooked up in two weeks (and a weekend)! The cookoff begins on February 1st and wraps up on February 17th where all games must be submitted before the end of the day. Check the event page (and your account's timezone) to see when the event ends in your local time.

The Kitchen Suite

The tool of choice is RPG Maker VX Ace Lite! It is the free but feature limited version of RPG Maker VX Ace. The restrictions of Ace Lite are as follows:

Maximum Database Entries
  • 10 Actors
  • 10 Classes
  • 126 Skills
  • 16 Items
  • 60 Weapons
  • 60 Armors
  • 30 Enemies
  • 30 Troops
  • 25 States
  • 110 Animations
  • 4 Tilesets
  • 10 Common events
  • 100 Switches
  • 100 Variables
  • There are no other database restrictions

Map & Event Limitations
  • 20 Maps
  • 10 Events per map
  • Call Common Event is disabled

Script Limitations
  • The script editor is disabled.
  • The 'Script' event command is disabled. Other script commands in Assign Variable, Condition Branch, and Move Event are still enabled.

These are strictly implementation restrictions that you are free to work around. Need more than sixteen items? Make your key items weapons nobody can equip! Want more than ten playable characters? Perhaps when one leaves the party you could overwrite its name and stats with your new character! Twenty five troops too limiting? Make a troop that adds random enemies via battle events!

Please note: While it is possible to add your own scripts to a game through devious means the spirit of the Ace Lite restriction rules in this contest. Injecting scripts is not allowed beyond using the enabled script calls for their intended purposes. Of course changing the database caps through other means is also right out. Any game found violating these restrictions will be disqualified.

You can download RPG Maker VX Ace Lite here.

If you want to see what you can do under such restrictions Deckiller has made a game in Ace Lite called Kolmesarta. Feel free to check it out!

Your Ingredients!

Everything in the kitchen is allowed! There is no theme to the cook off besides obeying the restrictions of Ace Lite. There are no resource limitations for this contest as Ace Lite does not restrict what you can import into your game. Whip out the spice rack! Prepare the vegetables! Go hog wild! It's a free for all!

Nobody wants a half baked morsel though. The only requirement beyond using RPG Maker VX Ace Lite is that the game must be complete. Only finished games are wanted here!

For the Tastiest of Them All

We've got four judges reuniting to sample the delicacies of all participants: The RTP Princess Liberty, The Amazing Artist Nessiah, the Makerscore Master Deckiller, and the Ludicrously Lazy GreatRedSpirit! Their number one game will received a boxed copy of RPG Maker VX Ace generously donated by Liberty! The lead developer of the winning game will be contacted by Liberty to make shipping arrangements.

That isn't the only prize though! After submissions are closed there will also be a two week voting phase for all members of RMN to vote for their favorite game! Voting will be open from February 18th to March 11th. The winner will receive their choice of any item excluding RPG Maker VX Ace from the RPGMakerWeb.com store courtesy of RPGMakerWeb!

There is always the achievement badge for participating too! One of a kind will not be made available again! Submit to that completionist tingle and take part!

I read that as 'titties' at first glance.
Craze
why would i heal when i could equip a morningstar

i don't think etsuo would ever dry his mouth out on titties
AAAAAAAND the NPCs are all done! The towns all work, the difficulty thing works...

Ok, one quick runthrough on easy just to final check it, and then I'm uploading the second I get home.

Well as a first status report.....
We're almost done =D!
Just got to wrap up the end, test the shit out of it, and spiff it up.
All maps are done, all enemies planned (Barring an optional enemy), all plots conceived, and eventing almost done!
I love naming things, as a side note.
Working around the limitations was only(?) hard for events, scripts, puzzles, troops, and items.
So I forgot I had to do a general description of my game before uploading. Oh, ok, no big-

Wait 500 words?! How-

Oh. 500 CHARACTERS. Nevermind. Thank goodness. Because 500 words would have been insane.
Gaaaahh....So many last second bugs....X_X

My game started as cool idea, but now it is just... boring, I don't think i'm gonna finish and if I do I don't want users to play a shitty game since this is not a X hours event but a 2 weeks one. So thinking of erasing my game (since I am not so much for cancelled games withouth a download at least) and quit.

Good luck to the others ;)

Don't do it. If the game is nearly finished, just release it. If it's shitty and boring, it's up to the players (always is).
Also, the point of events such as this one is to mobilize the community, to make people work hard on projects and learn through them, to talk about them, talk about game design, meet people, make friends for life, etc. The actual games are just part of the whole process. There's really no point in bailing now. A very small proportion of games made in events are actually great games.

Plus, you have 2 more days, so there's room for improvement!
So, do you think if I submit this at like 9 - 10 PM EST tomorrow that it'll be approved in enough time for me to submit to this contest?
Ok....Ok....

Final testing done. Final mercy stuff implemented for Simple] Mode (read: Very easy mode) implemented...NPCs and stuff are all done, no major bugs as far as I can see...

Just need to tidy up the Boss FAQ I'm including with the game, and then it's time to compile and upload.

May I suggest an exterminator?
And perhaps, don't eat the leaves off the trees? (I did that once, I thought it would taste like salad, still needs dressing)
Hell, some of the past winners of events have been games that no-one saw coming. Don't give up on your game before it's had its run.

Most likely resource staff will be on late Sunday to ensure that all competition entries that are in before the deadline are, well, approved. Thank the nice resource staff, folks. They do great work~

That said, you all realise you still have two-three days left, right? (Depending on your timezone.) By all means, get some testing done before the judging begins.
Hurrah! That makes me feel so much better! I was feeling like I had to finish it tonight, and it just isn't happening. This gives me time to perfect this beautiful work!
Ok, profile is up...

How...Umm...How do I upload the game? I am honestly not sure how to do that...
Well, I've already submitted a game download to the contest.
I can't change or replace it no matter what, right?

Regardless, I'll upload a bugfixed addition alongside the current download.
(On the game page, I mean.)

So yeah, I've just now started.

My method of getting around limitations: not getting around limitations.
There's always something to be said for simplicity!

This is true! My game will definitely be simple, haha.

It's actually sort of the same concept as Calunio's. The player is tasked with becoming as strong as they need to be in order to beat a boss that's available from the start.

That's actually a good concept. A lot easier than what I did. Much smarter.

X_X I tried to make a full length RPG from the get go. I did, but holy crap I had to spend every second of my two weeks that was not essential school work to do it. I need a break.

Okay, so.. I don't even have any gameplay at the minute if it makes anyone feel better. I have combat system and pie-throwing, but still no baking section or ANYTHING. Everything in that video is all I have! So you guys are doing tremendously well by comparison.

I'm gonna maybe sit here and cry at RPG Maker for a bit until I have to spend all my time in work again, then get home and be too tired to work on anything. D: Rinse and repeat for tomorrow, then!

Slaving over scenes. First dungeon's at playable stage, probably a bit on the tough side in terms of balancing. Profile should be in the queue now since I finally submitted images for it.
Hi, i am new around here, and i wanted to know (cuz time is running short) is there a way to make some kind of intro cut scene?
Yes there's several ways to make a cutscene... through programming in game events/npcs or through displaying a recorded video...

I am almost through, and also kinda new...

Can some one find the kindness in their hearts to explain submission procedure?
It is not specifically outlined in the initial contest rules...

Thanks! And good luck, all!
