What're We Cooking?

A full game cooked up in two weeks (and a weekend)! The cookoff begins on February 1st and wraps up on February 17th where all games must be submitted before the end of the day. Check the event page (and your account's timezone) to see when the event ends in your local time.

The Kitchen Suite

The tool of choice is RPG Maker VX Ace Lite! It is the free but feature limited version of RPG Maker VX Ace. The restrictions of Ace Lite are as follows:

Maximum Database Entries
  • 10 Actors
  • 10 Classes
  • 126 Skills
  • 16 Items
  • 60 Weapons
  • 60 Armors
  • 30 Enemies
  • 30 Troops
  • 25 States
  • 110 Animations
  • 4 Tilesets
  • 10 Common events
  • 100 Switches
  • 100 Variables
  • There are no other database restrictions

Map & Event Limitations
  • 20 Maps
  • 10 Events per map
  • Call Common Event is disabled

Script Limitations
  • The script editor is disabled.
  • The 'Script' event command is disabled. Other script commands in Assign Variable, Condition Branch, and Move Event are still enabled.

These are strictly implementation restrictions that you are free to work around. Need more than sixteen items? Make your key items weapons nobody can equip! Want more than ten playable characters? Perhaps when one leaves the party you could overwrite its name and stats with your new character! Twenty five troops too limiting? Make a troop that adds random enemies via battle events!

Please note: While it is possible to add your own scripts to a game through devious means the spirit of the Ace Lite restriction rules in this contest. Injecting scripts is not allowed beyond using the enabled script calls for their intended purposes. Of course changing the database caps through other means is also right out. Any game found violating these restrictions will be disqualified.

You can download RPG Maker VX Ace Lite here.

If you want to see what you can do under such restrictions Deckiller has made a game in Ace Lite called Kolmesarta. Feel free to check it out!

Your Ingredients!

Everything in the kitchen is allowed! There is no theme to the cook off besides obeying the restrictions of Ace Lite. There are no resource limitations for this contest as Ace Lite does not restrict what you can import into your game. Whip out the spice rack! Prepare the vegetables! Go hog wild! It's a free for all!

Nobody wants a half baked morsel though. The only requirement beyond using RPG Maker VX Ace Lite is that the game must be complete. Only finished games are wanted here!

For the Tastiest of Them All

We've got four judges reuniting to sample the delicacies of all participants: The RTP Princess Liberty, The Amazing Artist Nessiah, the Makerscore Master Deckiller, and the Ludicrously Lazy GreatRedSpirit! Their number one game will received a boxed copy of RPG Maker VX Ace generously donated by Liberty! The lead developer of the winning game will be contacted by Liberty to make shipping arrangements.

That isn't the only prize though! After submissions are closed there will also be a two week voting phase for all members of RMN to vote for their favorite game! Voting will be open from February 18th to March 11th. The winner will receive their choice of any item excluding RPG Maker VX Ace from the RPGMakerWeb.com store courtesy of RPGMakerWeb!

There is always the achievement badge for participating too! One of a kind will not be made available again! Submit to that completionist tingle and take part!

Hey everyone, I started this a little late but I think I can still do it, one question, can I use music from other games, like ps2 games and say to who the rights belong to in the credits ?

And thank God for that!

I imported stuff from Secret of Mana, AI wars (Amazing final boss theme, thank you devs!), a chiptune soundtrack called OST, and other places. replacing all of that would have been a pain...

Progress: final boss strategy all set up, all the stuff works, added some little tricks to make him not super easy due to an obvious weakness (people will RAGE when they see his counter to the obvious status effect to hit him with), and....umm....He's a BIIIIIT too easy. Just a little. *continues tweaking*

EDIT: Ok, good. He's not brute forceable. Awesome. :D
Aww, too easy... That's a shame. >=
Give him more stat points, and hide away stat increasing items! That's fun!

hahahaa.....*grins*

It's a lot worse than that. shall I tell you the evils I have done with this son of a gun?

EDIT: almost done...He's a bit hard now...but I can do really well against him before I eventually make a mistake...

Quotin' dis as the answer to the question. Credits aren't required but I think they are nice to have. Don't lose sleep over it though, nobody's going to shriek over a game that doesn't have credits.
AAAAAND DONE.

Well, one tiny last round of adjustments to do.

It's possible to beat the last boss. But.....eh....Gonna make it a TINY bit easier.

I mean, just a little bit. It goes on way too long IMO.

Edit: Lower his counter by one, lower HP for him and the badass guy, replace blind by a less long lasting ACC v thing....Increase amount that the SP restoring item heals....I think I'm good!

Yeah, not a problem, thank you for helping everyone, I'm just too polite sometimes, but anyway I'm gonna put it in the credits just for the people who might want to know.
You know what? I'm putting their HP back where it was.

My game is designed to be hard, and make you think hard. I should not make the game itself easier.

But still, what about the more casual players? Or people who just want a good story, and not have to fight tooth and nail for it?

.........Aha. Simple.

I'm making difficulty levels. And the implementation I have planned will be easy as hell to do. >:P

I'm not one to brag, but holy cow, my implementation is pretty smart. ^^

(Basically, on Very Easy, the player will start with 4 hats that double EXP gain and they can buy manuals from the shop to increase their stats marginally. On Easy, they get no hats, but they can buy the manuals. On Standard, they cannot buy manuals. :D)
Just keep in mind that you know the boss and the players won't, so double the difficulty that you find it to be is what the players will.

All resources are fine to use. It'd be nice to see accreditation, just to get people into the habit, but not gonna force you all~
Aaaaaaand implemented! Including a small tweak to the boss's big gimmick based on what difficulty you are on. Well...The manuals will come when I finish the NPCs and shops tomorrow.

Starting a run on Mode for one final test run, and to see if it's easy enough for the more casual JRPGers.

I'm kinda doing something similar using states as a means to reuse enemies to get more mileage out of them. I've got two PoweredUpstates enemies can give that gives them a boost in stats and change their AI in some ways. Since VX Ace's enemy command conditions aren't that great it'll hurt what they can do but w/e, it's a Lite game!

Enemies not having self switches or some of the capabilities of 2k3 hurts. It feels so stripped down.
Probably done due to being able to script, but I'll admit, there are a few things I miss from 2k/3 - like that one command that waits until something has finished before continuing on with the eventing. (I used that for all my move events orz)

Back in action... here's to whoever wished me well, hearing my plight, and the rest of you too while I'm at it...

looking forward to having criqitue of work, if nothing else...!!
MODSBANNIT, why am I not getting double EXP?!

I have an amulet equipped, and it has the EXR parameter set to 200%. I even tried setting it to 400% and I'm STILL getting normal EXP rates! >: (

GAH!! Even when I put it on the character's Class it doesn't do it! >_<

EDIT: What.....umm....OH!

I see. *facepalm* It does so invisibly. Derp. The battle engine still tells you "10 EXP get", but it doens't tell you it's been doubled....Ahhh.
Hmm... Try putting the EXR in a state and making this amulet apply this state (?)
Sounds retarded but who knows

EDIT: I was too late.
First town NPC's done...Second town done...ALMOST DONE! :D

Ah, I love characterizing. ^^
So yeah, I've just now started.

My method of getting around limitations: not getting around limitations.

There's always something to be said for simplicity!

Also...

My game started as cool idea, but now it is just... boring, I don't think i'm gonna finish and if I do I don't want users to play a shitty game since this is not a X hours event but a 2 weeks one. So thinking of erasing my game (since I am not so much for cancelled games withouth a download at least) and quit.

Good luck to the others ;)
